I have a ton of respect for Martina. She uses her platform to make the world a better place in every possible way. At one point she was poised to take over the world of country music, but chose to focus on her family rather than becoming the biggest name in the industry. She chose what was more important to her, and her words were given instant credibility because of her actions. She has been gifted with the greatest voice country music has ever heard, yet realized her biggest role was with her family, not just making some extra money. She is a wonderful example of strength in womanhood. 🤘🏻❤️

The fact that we all listen to this song and react the same, no matter what race, nationality, political beliefs, age, gender, economic situation, shows that we all are way more alike than different. How we react to this story is what is important. The differences we have between us all are completely unimportant if our emotional reactions to this video are the same. Bless you all.

I was a child protective services social worker for 25 years here in USA. Please, if you see something, say something! You could be ONLY one keeping a child from being hurt or killed. Many times you dont have to give your name if that part concerns you. But if you report, give firsthand knowledge. Not hearsay. And give every detail you know, no matter how insignificant it may be. Report to your county child protective agency, or call the hotline and they will refer info to correct agency. Call the police. Dont turn out your lights to wait till the screaming stops which tragically, people do for fear of getting involved remember this, when you meet your maker, do you really want to explain to him why you didnt step up to protect an innocent child or elder? I wouldn't. So please call. Blessings for doing so. Thank you.

Another important thing, just because they were a good parent don't discount what you are seeing. My nextdoor neighbor was a good mom when I moved in. Then she got into heavy duty drugs. She wasn't hitting them but she wasn't feeding them, doing laundry, providing a safe home, allowing them to sleep, having air that was safe to breath. CPS removed them. Fortunately they were removed before mom threatened to blow up the building if anyone else reported her and her new friends to the police, one of mom's guests start a fire in our building to punish those who made her mad, a week later one of her guest died of an overdose in her apartment and later that same day two men visiting had a knife fight. Had I not believed it was possible for a good mom to do a 180 those 2 little boys would have been there for all that. Instead they are living with their grandparents, have clean clothes, plenty to eat and are doing well in school again.

My one issue with this song is the line "She wonders but doesn't ask", as a teacher you are a mandated reporter. Which means that you are supposed to report suspected abuse and the bruises clearly looked like fingers.
@debbie1016
@debbie1016 Жыл бұрын
As a retired educator I was a mandated reporter. I have made many reports over the years. Sadly in my experience nothing ever was done to protect these kids. The majority of these children continued to be abused by their parents. We sadly had a child who thru their school years every teacher that child had reported the abuse to child protective services time and time again. The school nurse reported the abuse. The school counselors reported the abuse. The principal reported the abuse. We also found out thru the courts that the child's doctor, 2 neighbors and a family member of the child also reported the abuse. Sadly this child was beaten so badly that he suffered major brain damage and a fracture neck. He now is in a wheelchair and severely disabled. He can no longer speak. He is severely developmentally disabled now from the brain injury he suffered and can no longer walk and did for himself. Her was a very bright boy before that tragic day even with all the abuse he was suffering under the hands of his mother for years. It was so frustrating to see the handprint bruises on this child's body and face. He would tell you he got a whooping because he was late coming home. Or that he did not get 100% on a test. Or whatever other excuse the mother used to unleash her anger on him. He is now sadly being taken care of in a state home. He will never have an independent future and live out his dreams because that was taken from him. His mom received only 20 yrs in prison. He received a life sentence. There was really no justice for him in the long run. I just don't understand why something was not done before this happened. I don't understand why she did not get life in prison as she robbed him of living a fulfilled life and handed him a life sentence of being disabled.

@@debbie1016 OH your story just broke my heart! That mom should have been put UNDER THE JAIL FOR LIFE in my opinion. I can't understand why your county workers didn't protect him. That's just AWFUL! I'm so sorry! Wouldn't have happened in MY county! I promise you that! I've heard so many horror stories about other CPS workers doing nothing. They should all be fired and bring in workers who care and WILL enforce the law. I'm so sorry about the child you told me about. I wish he had been my case. I would have protected him every way I could have. Heck I STAYED in court with my cases to protect them and I loved every minute of knowing that with our proof, our lawyers and judges, we weren't allowing cases to be ignored or swept under the rug. Again, I am so sorry 🙏 for that poor child and for all children and elders who are being hurt.

@@debbie1016 this is a horrific story and I agree that we live with broken child protection services systems. But I would caution you against only sharing the horrific outcomes because the system does protect some children and an adult who is considering reporting suspected abuse might decide not to if the only stories they have heard had negative outcomes.

One of the things that I have never forgotten about Martina McBride. Is when she donated Christmas presents with Keanu Reeves . To a shelter where foster children go when they are just removed from their parents or they leave a foster home and don't have another one for them. I happen to get back from school when her delivery showed up. The manager allowed me to read the paper while they were still bringing in boxes. The next day while I was helping wrap the younger kids presents. The delivery from Keanu Reeves showed up. They both made so many children happy.

Martina McBride's start in her music career is an amazing story. He husband, John McBride, was working on Garth Brooks sound crew back in 1989. Martina joined him, selling merchandise at Garth's concerts. Garth heard Martina sing acapella and offered her the opportunity to be his opening act of she got signed to a record company. She got signed and in 1990 she went on tour as his opening act. According to Martina, even after all these years, she still looks at Garth as her mentor. His taking her on tour have her career a major jumpstart. Her talent is undeniable. He may have helped her get started, but her vocal talent is what makes her career so successful.

in the U.S. an average of 7 children die everyday from abuse. Martina has always used her amazing voice and her Platform once she became famous for serious issues such as child abuse, domestic violence, etc. Many Country artists do this as Country Music tells a story and these are stories that need to be told. Because people who are all snug in their homes with their kiddo's loved and tucked in tight each night tend to forget that their are so many children out there who never asked to be brought into this world and are beaten and neglected and treated worse than some treat stray animals. Martina has a special way of making you think about these things.

Since it’s not true about Martina’s niece I don’t know how you can come to that conclusion. The writer, NOT Martina,(Stephanie Bentley) was inspired to write it when she read a newspaper article about a mother who had killed her daughter. Martina didn’t write the song. It is not autobiographical. It’s not even biographical. It’s important no matter whom someone is related to, really. Her niece and nephew are alive and well. Their mother is a successful businesswoman. Rumours/lies and gossip. Sad really.

song “Concrete Angel” by Martina McBride came out in 2002, and is was still voted the #1 Saddest Country Song in 2014, according to Rolling Stone. At first glance, the song is about child abuse, stemming from a somber and heart wrenching event close to McBride’s heart. McBride’s niece was a victim of child abuse, so this song is a dedication to her. Her niece was abused by her mother, McBride’s sister, after she divorced her husband. McBride’s sister abused her daughter continuously until one day when McBride’s precious niece was killed.

@@dobazajrExactly! The writer, Stephanie Bentley, saw an article in the newspaper about a woman who killed her daughter and was inspired to write the lyrics. I wish people wouldn’t keep spreading this rumour. OP, the headstone can’t be her niece’s because she’s still alive as is her nephew and their mother is a successful businesswoman.
@catherinetodd5163
@catherinetodd5163 9 ай бұрын
OP The date on the headstone is 1995-2002 making her 7 years old. Stephanie Bentley, not Martina, wrote the lyrics for this song in 1997. That would have made Martina’s niece 2 years old by the time she finished writing Concrete Angel. It took her two years to write it so her niece probably wasn’t even born (or just ) in 1995 when she started writing it.

Martina always delivers the goods. And the bads. That went darker than I thought it would go, but I applaud them for going there. Too many kids get lost to abuse and their loss is obscured by our unwillingness to get past being uncomfortable and actually get mad as hell at society that enables this. On a musical note, check out Independence Day. On a personal note, you broke me with "go and hold my kids". Please do and never stop.

Country music artists do just go there. There are some who will say this is a true story about Martina McBride's niece, but I have never found a credible source with which to verify that information. What she does say about her music that highlights awareness of abusive relationships is this, "One way we can try to stop domestic violence is by breaking the cycle," McBride told CNN, "and the most important way we can do that is by getting the word out." She uses her platform and speaks out. Thank you for being such a kind soul ... I cry every time I see this.

Stephanie Bentley wrote the lyrics to the song in 1997. Martina’s niece would have been 2 years old when she finished but since Bentley has said it took her 2 years to write she may not even have been born when she started writing it. Bentley has also said she became inspired to write it after reading a newspaper article about a woman who had killed her daughter. It’s not autobiographical or biographical. Genealogy sites list her birth date but not a date of death as well. So no death certificates there. ( or elsewhere) I hope this helps. 😊

Country music has a way of makeing you cry sometimes. I don't care for most of it but then songs like this just hit me hard. I am always a lover of music that makes me feel. I understand what you ment about a mix of sadness and anger.

Perfect reaction, My Friend. Horror at the bruises, “Oh no” in your eyes at the line “sometimes she wishes she was never born”, sadness that she must DREAM of a place where she’s loved, cautious smile when she meets the boy and when they talk at their windows, then shock to ANGER when that mother (in name only) enters the room and grabs her to FIERCE ANGER when the beating is shown in the shadows. And the rest is too awful to discuss. The Boy was her Angel of friendship sent to offer her some comfort as she approached the end of her torment, and then to usher her forever into that place where she will be FOREVER loved and cherished as she deserved to be, and joined by all the other Angels who shared her fate and became loving friends in Heaven. God Bless You, Sir!

It is absolutely heartbreaking,and finally realizing at the end the little boy who was her only friend is a child who understands because he was also killed by his parents and came down to bring her home,to find joy with all of the other kids killed by a parent waiting on her to help her.People think he was an angel because of the song title but he was a ghost.The concrete angel was referring to the one on her headstone

Your reaction is right on point and Martina McBride would agree with you 100%. Her most powerful songs have dealt with the with domestic and child abuse if you want to hear the most powerful full range listen to Independence Day. Country music singers are not afraid to go there a couple of well three of them really have taken on domestic abuse quite locally Miranda Lambert gunpowder and lead kerosene Carrie lam Carrie Underwood two Black Cadillacs church bells blown away and just for the fun of it we can never forget Miranda and Carrie something bad but yeah country music singers because of the stories they tell because of the emotions that they mine they're not afraid to go there they're willing to take on difficult subject matter and bring awareness to it.

I'm right there with you feeling the anger and sadness. That baby girl deserved so much better. When this song came out it was during a push to prevent child abuse this song and Alyssa lies were very popular during that time. I'm a mandatory reporter here in the US so every time I go out I'm watching lil ones.
