Thanks for the video brought back pleasant memories. I Joined the GPO in July 1967 and remember the big safety push in that era. As 16 year old Trainee Technician Apprentices (TTA's) it was made clear you could refuse to do anything that you thought would be unsafe and would get the full backing of the management. They were simpler and happy times when young lads were brought into a working environment, backed up with good training and opportunities. As part of your apprenticeship you were offered day release to related technical training and give clear paths for career enhancement.

This is priceless and the fact that I know the engineer in the film, and am related to the person who made the film makes it even more interesting. Thank you for sharing

This was made as a film, not a video. Remember the era!

Wow! Back then you could have 3 ambulances in 1 day......now it takes 3 days to get 1 ambulance!

Aye tgays if you get one at all.

3 days - wow. You must live in a very special part of the UK. We can't get one at all - ever!

Gotta love that 1:8 angle of the ladder on the pole 😂

That seemed frighteningly shallow to me, too.

Of course he was injured. He drove his van without wearing a seatbelt, had no airbags and tried to climb a pole with Oxfords shoes and a grocers overalls on. Bloke must have been nuts! 😅😂😂

Not many parked cars on housing estates when this was filmed!
@wisteela3 жыл бұрын
I love the look of those old estates, and I think they were pretty new then. It's great that old houses like those are still about. I wonder if the places used still exist?

Looks like Eldred Avenue, Brighton where the first accident took place

The ambulance station shown is in Elm Grove Brighton, which has now closed.At 1.01 on the video looks like Brading Road Brighton.
@paulac53382 жыл бұрын
Yes it is Brading Road. Number 49 is where my Grandparents lived - P.A. Dobson who made the film is my uncle so he was using his Mum and Dad's house. Fascinating

Interesting, I also worked for them in Brighton. I think this film was made after 1961 as trolleybuses stopped running up Elm Grove in 1959 and the wires would have been taken down a year or two later.

One of the ambulances is a b registration. And it shows accident statistics up until 1966 so this is probably 1967 onwards

So that explains why no one is wearing seat belts in their cars.

I work in BT telephone exchanges and they still show the old class system...many have a separate toilet for use by managers only, with their own lock on the door.

never seen that in 32 years working for them, even in the old telephone house buildings .

@@tractorman810 The first one I ever found was at Brightlingsea in Essex. Once when my dad was promoted he was awarded a nicer ashtray for his desk.

That’s a good thing. You sound frightfully common and very degenerate.

The chances of getting an ambulance today if a heavy box dropped on your foot are zero. You'd have to wait a fortnight to see your GP.

I felt bad for the bloke that fell off that ladder. He looked like he really got hurt.

Why didn't he put the ladders on the grass,

I think they stopped painting their vans green in the mid 70s - when parked up on the road side they'd blend in with the foliage and cause accidents .

Which was the same issue with the grey paint that they bought in after the yellow phase.
@timbunker45292 жыл бұрын
When the grey paint came in it caused a big problem on airports. Heathrow wanted them to have a yellow roof so they could be seen.

It would take an act of parliament (health & safety at work act 1974) to kick things into gear and even to this day, we all still have inherent in us that "it won't happen to me". The private sector will always trounce the public sector in figures because unless a customer keeps paying, the bills don't get paid.

The music is theme from Animal Magic. Rather appropriate as BT is like a zoo.

When I started in 80s safety was largely using your own common sense , By the time I left 2016 it was mandatory , increase ten fold and a sackable offence, From one extreme to the other
