I've always thought that the pickle wedge is tucked into the hot dog bun for efficient packaging, not because it's supposed to be eaten in the bun. In other words, I always take out the pickle and eat it on the side. Also, if you want a Chicago dog with everything on it, tell them to "drag it through the garden."

I agree. I'd much rather have the deli pickle on the side that I can use as a pallet cleanser or just eat a couple bites when I want. Pickles can such an overpowering taste that all you get is the pickle and none of the more subtle flavors present.

If you want to try a true depression dog, since you live in Chicago, head just outside of Chicago to River Grove to Gene & Jude’s. They are pretty famous. It has no pickles in its traditional hot dog. It was a cheap meal for depression times. The hot dog is topped with mustard, relish, onion and sport peppers. Topped off with a generous helping of fresh cut fries. The do not serve ketchup. They have their hot dogs made according to their specifications. A truly unique taste. It’s so good. If you want to try some libations, head around the corner to the oldest Tiki Bar in Illinois Hala Kahiki. A truly unique and fun experience.

I guess it was something fun for her and her friends when they were in their 20's; go to Gene and Jude's for a hot dog, then Hala Kahiki for drinks afterwards. It was fun! 😊 (Although, slight correction: Gene and Jude's isn't open 24 hours, although they are open pretty late. 😉 I only know because I went there with a friend in the morning, and we had to wait for them to open.)

I'm a Chicagoland native, and Portillo's is my absolute FAVORITE restaurant. It's awesome that they're finally expanding outside of Illinois. You can order home delivery if you don't live near one. While the Chicago Hot Dog is delicious, the Italian Beef sandwich is the star of the show. My favorite way to eat a beef sandwich is to order it with extra gravy because the roll will still be crusty on the outside but soft on the inside. If I want it extra messy and delicious, then I order the sandwich dipped in the au jus gravy. I like it topped with sweet peppers and the same cheese sauce they use for their cheese fries. It's a delicigasm! And for dessert? Portillos makes THE BEST strawberry shortcake I've ever eaten. Their chocolate cake is famous, as is their chocolate cake shake. I'm making myself hungry just thinking about it! 🤤

I'm born and raised southwest side Chicago, and I grew up with an abbreviated version of this which has now been termed a "Depression dog." Places like Jimmy's, 35th St Red Hots, and Gene and Jude's do it: Just mustard, onions, relish and optional sport peppers. My local joint (a Nicky's) also put a pickle spear, but I always eat that separately, no matter the style. Sometimes I want the full Vienna-beef approved 7-ingredient dog, but most of the time, it's a bit overkill, especially with the flavorless tomatoes most places use. At least the celery salt helps perk up the tomatoes. The important points are the dog must be natural casing, and, for me at least, they gotta have sport peppers. They're not really that hot, but they are pleasant little acid bombs that just work for me with that dog.

The first and only time I had a hot dog from a cart in Chicago, the results were explosive. I came to the perhaps unfair conclusion that all the trimmings were there to mask the meat paste tube that may very well have had dog and or cat in it. I tested my theory at O'Hare by ordering a plain hotdog and discovered, to my dismay, that it was the same inedible tube of dog, cat and maybe squirrel mush. Fortunately, I had enough time before my flight to leave the barely digested hotdog in Chicago, much to the relief of my fellow passengers. On the question of whether or not it's a sandwich, only an ignorant heathen would call it one. It's a freakin' hotdog!

Feldman on Coney Island wrapped his dogs in bread first, later rolls. He lost so many China plates and metal utensils to the beach goers he needed something else. He wrapped the sausage in bread because it was easier to consume and absorbed some of the grease. These went into a paper bag and were thus sand-proof down at the beach.

The type of pickle on the hotdog is normally called a kosher dill spear (as opposed to an unsliced kosher dill pickle.) What Americans call gherkins are very small, lumpy pickles. To be honest, the other additions are what really make a Chicago dog to me. You need the poppy seed bun, tomatoes, sport peppers; the pickle shouldn’t be so up front in my opinion. Something you didn’t mention was the celery seed! Very important to the flavor of a Chicago dog. Also, the relish absolutely needs to be neon green.

(BTW, Lawrence, there's a Portillos near Anderson, when you visit your in-laws.) I was equally unimpressed. 1) I like the pickle, but it's better as a side dish. 2) Sliced tomatoes added nothing. 3) Seeds on the bun added nothing. 4) All I could taste was the pickle, meat, mustard, and spicy pepper. That's what most of my hot dogs taste like unless I'm having a chili dog. Have I been secretly eating Chicago-style hot dogs my entire life and didn't know it?

@@jj6282 the triple is completely unwieldy. go for the double cheeseburger with their regular toppings: mustard, Mayo, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickle relish, dill pickle slices, cucumber, and celery salt. save the ketchup for your fries. massive, hot, juicy meaty goodness!

My husband (native Chicagoan) says the pickle gets taken off and eaten separately (by those who like pickles). I love Chicago style hot dogs and actually do not like regular hot dogs. The addition of the veg, sport peppers, celery salt, just makes it. We live in Kansas now and it's tricky to find sport peppers. My husband puts sliced cucumber on the Chicago dogs instead of pickle. I love them! :)

Have a cousin that lives in So. Illinois and it used to be really hard to get all the fixins for a Chicago dog so she would call my mom and she would send care packages with the buns correct radioactive colored relish Roseland buns along with the stuff to make Italian beef sandwiches and every once in awhile a take and bake Chicago style thin crust with some frozen White Castle this was before you could get them in the frozen section

@chriscahill1005 That's awesome. I have had the Poppyseed buns sent. Now all his family lives in FL, so no more care packages!

Your husband is right about the pickle. I’m born and raised and still in Chicago. I take the pickle off. You already have the relish on it so to me the pickle is a side if you want it. Most of the time I give it to someone I’m with who like pickles.

We put cucumber slices on the hotdogs at the place (not Portillos) I worked at back in the '80's.

I’m not a Chicagoan, I’m from south Louisiana, but I will say, the Chicago style hot dog is probably one of the best combos of hot dogs. It might be because I love pickles and mustard a lot, but I just think the combo of all of the things together is really good👍

I agree that the size of the pickle spear is often too big. My approach is to take off the pickle and eat it separately. That way I can get just the right amount of pickle along with each bite of hot dog.

I grew up near Chicago and ate my hotdogs with mustard, onions, and …. catsup. Many years ago there was a place in Des Plaines that would add cucumbers and celery salt to the usual toppings.

I have lived in Tennessee now for mor than 20 years and I still miss Portillos. Anytime we travel north we stop there for dogs and beef sandwiches to eat and some to pack up and take home. Yum! Def try a dipped beef sandwich. Its the best! Sigh...now I will be thinking about Portillos for the next month. I heard they ship. May have to try it.

Living in the Chicago area, Portillo's is definitely a favorite and their hot dogs are great, IMO. They also share the rare honor of being the only hot dogs that don't give me heartburn. I have no idea why, because I eat them with everything, including the onions, hot peppers, and the pickle, but I never get heartburn from them. That says something, because I get heartburn if I smell food cooking. I don't even have to eat it.
