The writer-creator of Black Mirror - Charlie Brooker - and Josh Hartnett, the star of the season six episode Beyond the Sea, visit the BFI Southbank to talk, alongside director John Crowley and producer Jessica Rhoades, about the show.
Set in an alternative 1969, Beyond The Sea sees two men on a perilous high-tech mission wrestle with the consequences of an unimaginable tragedy.
The sixth season of Black Mirror heralds the long-awaited return of Charlie Brooker’s dark, satirical anthology. This new series is described by Netflix as the most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected yet.

Josh Hartnett was excellent at portraying both a charismatic family man and a frightening, unhinged, tragic figure. Sad how he hasn't really gotten many major lead roles since the 2000s, he's very much still got it. He'll be in Oppenheimer this year too so hopefully a career resurgence is on the way.

To me he wasnt really frightening or unhinged until the murders, felt awful for him most of the show until he danced/touched Cliffs wife.

He would have been an excellent Wayne in Nolan films. Bale is great, but different than how Hartnett would have been. Bale plays Wayne very cold. Hartnett would have made him a bit more sympathetic. Neither is better than the other, just a bit different.

The one thing that to me that was a kind of flaw in the plot concept was choosing to have the avatar-androids be the ones on the earth why the real humans were on the space station rather than the other way around. Unless there was a detail that I missed earlier in the episode but if the androids being operated are just as complex and physically articulated as a human being then it would just make way more sense to have them working on the space station.
@K.C-2049
@K.C-2049 5 ай бұрын
I've seen this argument before, but think about it: if the robots malfunction on Earth it's not a big deal because the astronauts can continue the mission. if they malfunction in space the mission goes tits up. it's sort of a mini commentary on the dispensibility of men in Cold War era societies I reckon.
@artofsam
@artofsam 5 ай бұрын
@@K.C-2049 Like I said, if there was just a little explanation as to the nature of the mission and why it was important it required humans then I could have embraced that concept a little more but it just felt unnecessary for them to be there physically when the robot avatars are literally indistinguishable from human beings and logically they are even more efficient as they don’t require medical attention if they are hurt. Interstellar gave an elegant reason as to why humans were vital to the mission instead of just sending robots I just wish they did the same here but that’s because I’m a sci fi nerd that likes that sort of technical detail.

I’m sorry, I will never not find this man extremely hot, no matter what role he plays. Crystal meth addict snowboarder? Hot Aspergers? Still hot Psychopat astronaut? Never not still hot Bisexual warewolf? Even hotter I know he hates it being called hot, he worked so hard to be taken serious as an actor, taking on so many different roles in so many different independent movies. He is an incredible actor and if he would have chosen hollywood, he would be right up there with Brad Pitt. But he didn’t, he chose a life for himself, his sanity, his family. I have nothing but admiration for him. Also, can we talk about Aron Paul s performance? The acting was incredible, the crying scene? Had to watch it multiple times

@olavbjortomt1596

Replicas don't do physicals. The mission seemed to be partly for monitoring the effects of deep-space travel on the human body.
@13strong
@13strong Жыл бұрын
@@olavbjortomt1596 Also, they make it clear that the replicas have issues with some motor skills. Cliff struggles to chop wood. David struggles to fight off the cultists. David also stumbles over the steps at Cliff's house, I think? It's clear that the replicas exist to give the astronauts a way to experience something like life back on earth, but it's not 1:1 and they couldn't be trusted to operate the spacecraft. Lastly, if the connection was ever severed, then the replicas would shut down and the ship would be without a crew. But with humans on board, if the connection to Earth was severed, the mission can continue.

great ending, the only right way to finish the story, he cant go back neither as himself or cliff, he’s got no one, he’s at point of no return and the only way to deal w himself and the pain that consumes him is to cause pain to another person, who still has things that he’s no longer possess.
