CANADA'S NEW FLAG

9 жыл бұрын(22 Feb 1965) For forty years the familiar red ensign with Canada's coat of arms had been the flag of the nation at places abroad. Now Canada has an official flag to fly at home as well as overseas. At the Hall of Fame, in Canada's Parliament Building in Montreal is the governor, General George Vanier and Madame Vanier with government officials and leading citizens who are watching the ceremony. The new flag is hoisted and a 21 gun salute is fired.

Suez crisis was one of the reason. But the old flag was better. It was a link of canadian people with their british brethren. Gone all gone.

Sorry Canadians but the maple leaf flag is such a joke. The old red ensign actually had character and reflected the history of Canada. What the heck does a maple leaf represent other than the liberal party?

The leaf was one of many symbols that were used in concert. Look at Red Ensign flag. The current flag is just garbage.

I repeat what I said to you.The Leaf has been a symbol of Canada since at least the 1830's.You are entitled to your preference for the Canadian Red Ensign but to refer to your country's current flag as "garbage" is unpatriotic.Btw I liked and respected the old flag myself but our current flag was chosen in a free and fair vote by our MP's and that's the one I'm loyal to-at least until it is replaced.

The maple leaf has been a symbol in Canada's history since Canada was founded. And what's wrong with the current flag I think it's a stunning flag.

Since when have Canada's Parliament Buildings been in Montreal?!?! I believe Ottawa is our Capital, unless this broadcaster knows something that I don't? Geesh, how unreal when a real newscast gets such facts incorrect. I love the Maple Leaf but, I also smile when I see the Red Ensign, which is still, after-all, a National Flag in Canada.

@BRADY KIM ha ha well when an American citizen notices this error, than you KNOW the broadcaster was incorrect. Funny; literally 6 hrs ago I was driving along the Detroit River and commented that *I bet I could walk to Michigan* because the River seemed frozen solid 🇨🇦❄🇺🇸

1:46 pause a look at our faces. We Canadians didn't want a new flag or identity. The government did not hold any referendum, we had no choice. You can see we are not amused!

Today is our nations flag day. I want the monarchy removed in my life time I am tired of indifferent Canadians that accept a foreign head of state and their symbols front and center! I want our Canadian symbols to be the face of the nation! #Abolishthemonarchy

"Canada's Parliament Building in Montreal" That says it all right there. Britain didn't know anything about Canada and weren't interested. It was time for our country to move on and establish ourselves as an independent nation with a symbol that reflected ourselves. We know our history and are still part of the Commonwealth but we also need to move beyond that and stand on our own.

The only time Britain notices Canada is when they need us.During the world wars or more recently since its citizens voted for Brexit.Then it suddenly realizes we exist.

The only thing that happened was that we replaced our British/French identity, with an American one. As a country now, we are practically America light. People can't even say what defines Canadian culture without saying superficial things such as Tim Hortons or Hockey. This country is a husk of it's former self.

By removing the Red Ensign all we've achieved is to bring Canada closer into America's sphere of influence. Our Commonwealth status seperates us from America. It should be on our national flag.

Wrong. If you lose your history, you lose everything. Canada should have retained their old flag and their relation with Britain should have been more stronger. Australia kept all those and they have retained proudly their british heritage while assimilate other cultures. Canada assimilated terrorists, separatists and all 3rd world criminals. Canada even gave residence to plane hijackers who killed Canadians. And now you have that coward rat as a PM.

I would almost consider it an insult that people would rather have the red ensign. It almost seems like they are suggesting that the greatest thing Canada could ever accomplish is that it was once part of the British empire; that we should derive all of our pride from our mother country instead of having any of our own and that the future for Canada must be disasterous, so we should only focus on the past. When it comes to flags, they're meant to show the country moving forward. When the American flag was created after their independence, it didn't show how they used to be in the British empire, it showed how they were moving forward. When the French flag was created during their revolution, it showed the country moving forward. Even when the union jack was created after the union of Scotland and England, it didn't show how the countries were devided prior to their union, it showed how they were after they were joined together. A flag should proclaim "looking to the future" instead of "yearning for the past".

The USA's flag stripes are based on a British colonial era flag. Hawaii also has a flag based on British design.

@@jeffkardosjr.3825 The stripes are based on a British design, but their meaning was adapted and changed to fit a new rhetoric. They removed the union jack because it was no longer relevant, which is exactly what Canada did. Canada kept the red background, they just put different symbols on top of it. Hawaii was never really British colony, the union jack on that flag has a different meaning.

Everything you said would have been accurate if Canada had the union jack as its flag. But it didn't. Canada HAD its own flag- The Red Ensign. Not British, but Canadian. The small Union jack in the corner is a symbol of Canada's ties to the UK...Nothing more. Canada's legacy is up to HER actions, not the design of a new flag. The maple leaf isn't a desire to move forward but a desire to have us forget where we come from, in efforts to take us into an unknown and undesirable future. For those desperate to radically change the present, historical memory is an enemy.

If you do that you should leave Australia for the land where your ancestors came. Without the British Australia is an invalid country. The land what you Europeans named Australia belongs to the natives, whites out!

Majority of the Australians have deep respect and love for current flag. That's what I read. As long as it remains Anglo saxon majority nation. The flag will not change.
