(4 Jun 1951) Easington Colliery has suffered the worst mining disaster in County Durham for over forty years; comrades and relatives of the entombed men have been told that hope of rescuing them alive must be abandoned. Lord Hyndley, Chairman of the National Coal Board, and Mr Shinwell were on the spot.

my grandad came from cannock colliery staffordshire mines rescue to help...

My mates family were came from mining backgrounds. I'm from Washington Tyne and Wear, i have no idea where your from but, what i gather is miners and miners family's were very close. They looked after one another. Comrades. That's a great thing he did.

My father was working in the pit at time, but in a different seam from the disaster. He later engaged in salvage work.

My uncle Tom was killed in the disaster ,he was only 21.

One of the brave rescue worker that died was John ( Jack) Young Wallace 26 years old died of fumes trying to rescue trapped miners from what iv found out hes likely my relative im a Wallace
