I really appreciate that the British Vogue has spent so much effort to discover and share the fashion culture and history with us. I think this is very important for the new generation actually, to educate them where all these glamour, beautiful things come from but not just in the surface knowing a bunch of labels or designer names only. Great video.

faune can not agree more . Fashion can be so innovative in art or technology . I cant thank Vogue more to. open my eye on Fashion. British fashion has such contradiction which makes British fashion so rich: the classy posh polish to the punk, new romantic and activist culture.

I just recently watched a video of these club kids, the xclusiv club ("height of goth 1984" is the video) and became so intrigued by the culture there. It wasn't homogenous, it was diverse and DIY and multifaceted. This video helps to show some of the background in that scene, and also why I feel an affinity for it today. I'm American, but there's some similar things happening in our own culture - and I've been influenced by british culture in my life as well - so it's really cool to see these parallels and differences.

I do believe Antony Price and Vivienne Westwood are still alive and they've continued to make their fashions after their fashion. They were the godparents of New Romantic style. I still covet an Antony Price ice cream suit!

i really love Vogue especially the British Vogue which explore national identity , culture and modern art . Thanks vogue for showing me , fashion is beyond superficial image, business and marketing but also the historical , humanity and society side .

My boyfriend was a punk in the 70s then a new romantic 80s but he lived in Liverpool where a lot of amazing bands emerged when he was growing up xx

How could they forget the best Groups from the New Romantics! I loved: Roxy Music, Simple Minds and Echo and the Bunnymen! True New Wave- and true New Romantics. Instead they let Boy George take the spotlight in this documentary and he did not have the best music or the Romantic look, more a Buffalo style.

"Making a Scene" is a pretty clever title. The only reason I've even heard the term New Romantic is because Jonathan Davis was one in high school, but once I saw a picture I knew exactly what it was. Unrelated: Does the UK have a noticeable number of jugggalos?

It was all about the image, and a lot of people hid behind their "look". It was an amazing creative time though, both in terms of fashion and culture. The fashion informed the culture if you get my point. People took ages to get ready - hours to create something different and sartorially magnificent. Also in the 80's we were subverting gender stereotypes before today's generation was born! We didn't however, force people to agree with us or cancel people on a whim. It was about freedom of expression. I lived in Manchester in those days and used to go to clubs like "Legends" and "Cloud 9". I still know some of my old friends from those days. There were some good and bad times, but Im glad I grew up in that era.

Nice that people are still inspired by the New Romantic scene but don't just redo bad copies of iconic Sue Clowes t-shirts!!! Also those guys talking about Marilyn really should research the history of HIM and Boy George lol.

I was at St Martins the same years as Stephen Jones. I remember him as a rather self conscious fashion student. He still had hair then and styled it like grandpa Munster _ bless. I was studying sculpture. I had a friend who loathed him, so that’s rather coloured my impressions of him. The whole Blitz Kids scene wasn’t as interesting as they themselves thought or indeed how it is remembered now. The music was truly awful compared to what was out there at the time. Ironically for youth movements to work and be relevant there has to be uniform rules, which is counter intuitive and of course that there is this rule is their death eventually. We saw that with punk in 1976/77. The New Romantics of the Blitz scene was play dressing up and ultimately shallow and devoid of life. Interestingly a costume hire company closed down around that time and their goods became available for sale. Coincidence ? If my memory serves me well I think it was called Angels. I worked at the time at hire costumier, Mays, in Garrick Street and got to wear original historical clothing..happy days. I think the goth scene that started in the Batcave Club in 1982 was far more vibrant and interesting and of course it spawned a world wide scene that is still going strong.

Such a late reply here! Reading up on the different opinions surrounding the New Romantics era. My mother was studying at the School of Fashion around the same time, I've often wondered why she doesn't love the era. Apart from being in the studio most of the day she says unfortunately her love for the era was tainted because she knew of the 'pioneers' and their facade! I believe the media positioning was the reason that the era became so large!

as far as goth is concerned i always thought in the states it was much more tied in with punk but in the uk more tied in with the new romantic deal. i may not be 100% correct about that but from footage i've seen from both countries in the early 80's goth in the states was always much rougher around the edges in the uk it was alot more stylish.

It started in the late 70s, not the 80s. By 81 it was over; frilly shirts in the high street, the name 'New Romantics', etc. " London was the poor relation in Europe" ; ah, plus ça change mes amis.
