As an Australian it’s insane how many people here do not wear sunscreen, especially in Summer. It’s engrained in us from as soon as we can talk through school and campaigns but somewhere along the way people just stop applying it… and it’s probably the worst place to not apply it! The sun is down here trying to kill us! Most of my extended family have either had spots extracted or full blown cancer, and yet nothing is learned.

@@msk-qp6fn omg alot of the older people here in my country have that mindset too and it unfortunately has passed down to the younger generation. However, thanks to globalization and tiktok becoming super popular, there is an abundance of pro-sunscreen message out there so a lot of skincare loving youngsters are really into their sunscreen here. Anyways back to the unfortunate mindset, once we had to be outside for some sports activity and it was super sunny that morning and I was feeling uncomfortable and this person I know was like the morning sun is good for you 🤗 and I cringed.

I had to watch my dad’s best friend get skin cancer from one bad burn in his early 30s and pass away within a year. It was awful. I’m such a stickler for sunscreen and hound my friends but people “want to tan” and don’t listen a lot of the time. It gets very frustrating! I just entered my 30s and I’ve already had two moles removed that were potentially cancerous (they weren’t thankfully!) and I wear sunscreen constantly. I wish more people would consider the consequences of not taking good care of your skin against UV rays.

Bless her heart ❤ 🥺 I've been noticing lately that poor Britney has a lot of sun damage on her skin. She lives in Florida. She is always vacationing somewhere tropical as well. It's very obvious that she LOVES being in the sun 🌞 and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! I just wish she would protect her skin. She already has significant sun damage and she is only going to get more...and on top of the ridiculous amount of stress that she has had to endure over the years, her skin is taking a lot of damage. I just want her to be well and FREE and live her best life 😁

I think it's wild that you have to go to a dermatologist to get a spot checked. In Australia all of the GP's remove sun spots and cancer because it's so common - you can't wait for a referral to a derm! Or pay for a specialist for every spot! We treat it/cut it out ASAP.

I live in Sweden. My husband has always had some bigger moles on the back, and they started to change. We take a photograph of his back every summer, and this was very helpful, as we could actually see moles changing from year to year. The dermatologist said this was probably not going to develop into cancer, but just for safety removed them. It's a very simple procedure, he got a local anaesthetic cream and then they just extracted the moles in a second. Now he does not have to worry 🐱 Don't fear this 👍😊

Cassandra, I LOVE that you are so passionate about what you do. Thank you for this video. I, too, have had some awful sunburns resulting in melanoma (successfully excised and being monitored every six months). The scary part about these burns is that the cancer doesn't necessarily occur where the burn occurred. So glad you are advocating for people to use that sunscreen!

When I was a child we lived in Australia for a bit and me and my step sisters went to this large pool that had an outside part. My step dad didn’t make me reapply spf at all and we were there for hours! I felt fine but burnt so so badly that my arms had large blisters and I couldn’t lift my arms because the burns on my shoulders hurt so much. It was definitely second degree and it wasn’t fun. I live in back the UK now and can burn in the summer here so I can’t fathom how much damage that did. I’m just glad I’m now into skincare and using spf always and reapplying! As well as getting my moles checked. I’m very fair and always burn, but luckily have never been very interested in tanning. Also as someone who suffers with depression, it really helps to hear you say “you deserve to take care of yourself” 🤍 thank you for this video!

I had a thing when I was 4, I went to the beach and my parents thought that if the weather was gloomier and we stayed under the umbrella we won't have a problem but after 4 hours of falling asleep, I got a tan like a charred sausage because the sun was so strong still and penetrated through the umbrella. I had a lot of moles growing on my face since the age of 4 until 7, and now having issues with them and skin tags. Now as a heavily tattooed person SPF 50+ and protective wear are my bffs, especially on my face, not just my body.

I lost my father to skin cancer when I was a young kid. He had it when I was a baby and was able to fight it, but it came back in late September 2004 when I was 7, and it was too late, the cancer was too far into the stages bc it came back full force stage 4. We lost him March 2005 even after his surgery to remove the cancerous moles on his back, chemo and radiation. I still remember the day the cancer got to his liver, because I looked into his eyes and the whites of them were yellow, which meant it progressed to stage 5. He ultimately got skin cancer because of how much time he spent in the sun unprotected as a kid, and back at that time sunscreen wasn’t as popular or even researched as much as it is today (he grew in the 60s/70s) PLEASE ALWAYS WEAR A HIGH SPF AND ALWAYS REAPPLY! It can save your life! maybe not now but in the future. Your skin will thank you, trust me. I am 26 now, and I wear sunscreen every single day. PS - Regularly check your body for any irregular moles, or if any moles seem to be growing. PLEASE see a doctor if this happens because Melanoma can be caught early, and you will have a better chance of survival. ❤

I can relate to your childhood experiences of being in the covering one piece swimsuits, my mum made me wear them for years (and now I choose to wear them because I feel comfy in them), always made me have a hat and sunscreen, and didn't let me lie out to tan. She had a cancer scare when i was a baby so she's really cautious (plus fair skin with red hair). I once got a sunburn on the back of my legs while visiting the beach on holiday with my grandparents because I refused to stop lying on my tummy in little pools of water in the sand. I think I was only about 5yo and the rest of my holiday sucked because it hurt so much. Now as an adult I choose to wear the one piece sun suits plus a hat when I'm swimming, and if I'm not in the water then I'll have a shirt and wrap skirt to cover my skin as much as possible, plus sunscreen.

fun fact; 3rd degree burns dont actually hurt as much as you'd think. this is because 3rd degree burns have damaged deep into your skin, towards the subcutaneous layer and the nerves become damaged. You would still, however experience pain in the surrounding tissue, but from memory 2nd degree is much more painful!

I had numerous second-degree sunburns in my younger years. I even had a third-degree sunburn once, and I had to get skin grafts and all the jazz. Wish I had been religious about sunscreen years back. I'm either a Type I or II, though I **CAN** tan (pretty dark), but it requires LOTS of burns first (like, daily unprotected sun exposure for a few hours each day for a few months). Makes me cringe, even ashamed, to think about it. But since really understanding the importance of spf, I now promote it ad nauseum; I even include sunscreen in my Christmas gifts to the nieces and nephews. Thank you for reminding/educating people about this topic! I hope that mole of yours is nothing serious. I'm so sorry to hear about your grandma. 💞

As someone who had a melanoma when I was 20 years old, it is also important to be with trustworthy professionals because in my case my boyfriend who was in medical school saw a mole and thought it was weird and I went to a derm that was specialized in aesthetics and he said it had nothing wrong so I didn't need to get it removed, I got back home and tod my boyfriend and he told me to go to another derm who was specialized in skin diseases and we ended up finding out that it was a melanoma. Luckily we got it after just a year that the mole had appeared and was still only 0,25mm deep so we could just remove it cirurgicaly and I just have to go to the derm every 3 months now haha. So, basically find good professionals, because there are bad ones out there.

I have had 3 sunburns that developed blisters. The first time was when I was a preteen and we went to the beach. I guess I hadn't reapplied because I know my mom always had us put on sunscreen. It ended up feeling like I was being stabbed with pins in the burn (clogged follicles!). Most recently I was wearing a bathing suit with a fancy cut out pattern on the chest and extending tojust below the sternum and I didn't apply any sunscreen on the most bottom part of the cut out pattern. I thought I had reached all the spots that showed through and i guess I didn't. I had a quarter sized sunburn that was all blister. The blister popped and now 3 months later I still have a mark/scar where the sunburn was. The other bad burn was on my shoulders in the fall when I was a dumb college student sitting out on the quad for several hours. I was wearing a tank top and I was stupid and knew less about sun protection. Back then I just used sunscreen when going to the beach or the lake even though I'm definitely someone that burns very easily.

Finally her pcp developed brain cells and sent her to a derm who immediately scheduled a surgery for removal as well as twice a year screenings. THANKFULLY it didnt spread systemically. But literally anything weird like that on your body do NOT wait. She was lucky sqaumas cell is a slow progressing cancer as it is- i shutter at the thought of it had been something else.

I got an awful sunburn at a horse show while I was photographing and now that the tan is fading (I was nice and red and then peely!) this little mole that used to be very uniform in color now has a little black spot on it.

Love this. As estheticians spf is second nature to us. Admittedly because of my ethnicity I'm not the best about reapplying because I never burn, but as a (hypocritical) professional - please wear your spf haha

I burn so easily. I did have some serious burns as a child, but very few in my adulthood. Only because I avoid sunlight and use sunscreen when I'm outside. My husband tans easily without burning.

i have a question!! i have a friend who is a surfer, and he puts diaper rash cream (which is apparently high in zinc) on his face and it prevents him from getting burned 😳 however i was wondering whether this is also protecting him from UVA rays (since it seems like it is blocking UVB if he’s not getting burnt?)? when i heard that so many red flags came up since it’s not spf certified, but if he is surfing for hours and not getting burnt, does that mean it is protecting him from ALL UV rays? or just UVB? any insight would be so helpful!

I never really got any sunburn (only like around my nose that hurt a bit), I would almost never use suncreen (middle eastern skin type). i would just get a tan... so I wasn't careful and young and naiv. Also my parents didnt take it seriously. Than I got in skincare & was shock to finde out how dangerous it is. Also being someone with aloooooot of freckels and birthmarks I need to be actually careful & have risk on skin cancer which obviously scared me to finde out. Now I use it everyday & even in winter.

I'm really confused about the Fitzpatrick scale. I'm Chinese, have light beige skin, dark brown-black eyes and hair, but I seldom burn, I tan to brown quite easily and almost never peel (I have to get super super super brown first before that happens) What type am I? When I do the quizzes it always says type 4-5, but then the example races are like Indian, Hispanics, Africans etc. I'm very confused.

This low key looks like my average sunburn lol. I just want to clarify I DO wear sunscreen and a lot of it because I burn so easily and I always go for broad spectrum and as high of spf that I can find and I reapply super frequently….but for some reason burns seem inevitable to me. When I burn tho I blister, I peel, I’m twins with tomatoes… it’s awful

i am a 4 on the fitzpatrick scale (indian) and most people here have a similar skin tone too(note that in india you will find people on almost all levels of the scale just not 1) but i am very photo sensitive burn easily, peal and tan very easily and on an extreme level before i started going out in the sun properly (till the age of 6-7) i was literally a 2 on the scale so that’s how you know how much i have tanned over the years . i do apply spf every day and i am extremely acne prone so i use mineral spfs which leaves a white cast (the neutrogena mineral spf) that’s one of the only fragrance free minimal spfs in india….so any recommendations? and is it common for people to have this amount of photo sensitivity?

So the historical perception of what causes people to evolve darker skin or not has been how close to the equator or not their ancestors are. However there were unknowns even when you corrected for ancestors' proximity to the equator like why are Siberians and Inuits so dark but not Nordic Europeans? New studies show it is not actually how much sun these groups' ancestors were exposed to but whether they had a grain-based diet or not. Hunter/gatherer diets are rich in Vitamin D while people who sustained off of grains had to evolve to produce that themselves or else they would have Vitamin D deficiencies.

I saw sunburn in the title and I winced. I only experienced minor peeling from sun burn only once in my life and it was still unpleasant and painful. It's why I just don't go to beach or outdoor pools. It simply is not worth it, and this is coming from someone who adored the water as long as she can remember and was part of her school's swimming team.

You have “skin cancer scare” just from mild sunburn (please no hate, just a joke)? I get sunburned as child so badly that I had blisters big as Penny on my shoulders, and skin on my face looked like dehydrated raisin and I didn’t feel touch on it how hard my skin become. I peeled off for months and I also had burned out my bathsuit shape for two years. And yes, I had my SPF30 sunscreen on me, and put it on regularly, but I was outside whole day and later we found out I have some mild UV alergy, so SPF50 every day for rest of my life 👍 SPF become my religion 😂
