If I'm not mistaken it's quite common for referees to have a lot of playing history and background. People tend to see them as players who weren't good enough to play professionally, so they're very in tune with what's happening throughout the game, not just the rules.

I’m fairly certain that’s correct, with the exception of a handful of refs or linesmen who would’ve made pros if not for a bad injury or some sort of health issue. I had a buddy who was being scouted for the OHL until he shattered his elbow. Nowadays he’s more or less a full time referee at the Canada Games Centre in NS

They’re all excellent skaters and the vast majority played at some level, but it’s fairly rare for them to have made it to the NHL as a player. I found a list of about 10, but there are probably a few others.

My daughter plays pro hockey in Europe. Just last night she was at a club with a bunch of teammates, and they ran into one of the refs who officiates in the league. The ref joked with them about how much shit he gets from them and the coach, and then he bought them all a couple of rounds. As with all things hockey, words get thrown, sometimes fists, but it stays on the ice and there is mutual respect.

Wes McCauley and Paul Stewart are two examples of many refs who were drafted and/or played in the professional ranks and even the NHL.

At 3:40, "is he faking it?" The penalty was for "embellishment," which means the other team did something relatively mild but the penalized player acted like it was severe. Referees don't like it when it's obvious a player is trying to deceive them. This video omitted the most famous recent incident. When the referee turned on his mic to announce the penalty, he first said "you can't do that." The way he said it made it funnier.

The kind of diving that happens all the time in footie gets you a 2 minute penalty in hockey. I used to referee, and we used to call it unsportsmanlike conduct, but then they started calling it what it was: embellishment.

I grew up in a small town, population 500 or so, in Canada. Every kid with the exception of 2 or 3 (for whatever reason) skated. Most of us played organized hockey. The local arena/skating rink was the nerve center of the town from the moment the ice was ready in the fall till it started getting nice outside in the spring and the ice melted. At age 14 or so, I began to referee.

I played hockey with Fredrick L’Ecuyer who became an NHL ref in 2010. He would swing by to play on our beer league team in NC when he had some time. Dude was a great skater with a wicked shot. I doubt there’s one out there that didn’t play some form before becoming a ref.

The doing it all while skating is the part that’s hard to explain. I’ve been playing for 30 years, since I was 4, and I think about skating the same amount I think about walking, it definitely takes longer than 4 weeks, I’m more confident I won’t fall on skates than on feet

When asked what my favorite sport is, I always answer hockey! In every other sport, if you punch another player in the face, you get ejected, and, possibly suspended. In Hockey? Well, even if you consider it an "suspension", it is only for 5 minutes! Aside from that the speed and creativity of the game is breathtaking.

I'd love to see your reaction to "Brawl in Hockeytown" (Fightnight at the Joe). It's one of my greatest memories of Hockey and shows how the players regulate bad apples within the game. There are longer recaps where they show the importance of that game to a rivalry for the ages. If you're new to Hockey will also show different the game is today Vs. 20+ yrs ago.

This is how you can understand the complexity of skating at a high level for hockey. Hockey has been around since the 1800's, skating has been around since who knows. To this day coaches, instructors, etc are still finding/creating new and more efficient ways to improve an individuals skating. Like their agility, speed, balance, creativity. Tell me if that happens with running. Sure there are techniques and such, but its mostly all been figured out. You just need someone that is physically gifted and you can teach them the same techniques that you were taught and they could be competing at a high level. Skating is still to this day changing and improving. These younger kids speed is so next level compared to the last generation and you can quite literally see it in their form when they essentially "Full Sprint". Their entire form and technique in a full sprint is different. There is a cool video that does a breakdown analysis on it, it's a good watch. That is why when "The most difficult sport" is brought up for discussion, hockey is always in the top 5, and a debate for 1 or 2.

I’ve always thought hockey was the best sport because these guys never seem to lose their love for the game. It’s no nonsense. I’m playing to win and you better not hurt one of my teammates or were going to get you back on the next play. The refs don’t take any crap off of the players either. And you have to have talent to play this game. The movie Slap Shot (1977 with Paul Newman) is funny. You two should watch it.

Refs in any pro sport are under the most pressure of any major part of the game. A player who is objectively great will never lack for opportunity, but refs are always being intimidated with the will of team owners, players, and fans to distort how they call. They have no leverage if they're targeted. It's the main way that pro sports are still corrupted by the gambling industry.

And if you want to see the weakest officials in all of sports just look at Major League baseball........ It didn't used to be that way either. Back in the day there were epic screaming matches between umpires and managers with no ejections. You used to not get ejected unless you made contact with the umpire or just wouldn't stop screaming. Now they literally eject you for nothing. Their feelings are so fragile and for some reason they think everyone buys tickets to go see them. Hockey is one of the few real men's sports left.
