Jim Stafford was a fave of mine. Most of his songs were humorous. I think "Wildwood Weed" was his biggest hit. I saw "My Girl, Bill" in the comments. Another fun one. You could try "Swamp Witch" for a whole different vibe. "Real Good Time" was pure 'kountry korn'. Hard to believe from this song, but Jim was a top flight guitarist. Saw him live in the late '70s. Quite a showman.

This song is about how a nervous boy tries his best to cope with a new and stressful situation. It sometimes takes us guys a while to figure out which snake is best to use. Stafford had several fun songs like this back in the day. "COW PATTY" and "THE WILDWOOD WEED" are couple standouts, too. Catchy tunes and lots of giggles... pure Jim Stafford. Roger Miller had a bunch of these types of songs, also, and you might get a kick out them. Lewie Wickham had a song called "THE SIXTY DOLLAR DUCK" that was a hoot, and for years I thought it was a Roger Miller song. Kindred souls, perhaps? Thanks for this reaction, Britt!

This was one of my grandfather's favorite songs. However, to say my grandmother was terrified of snakes is an understatement. And since my grandfather was a real joker, guess what he'd do. A rubber snake here, and another there.... Jim Stafford's "Wildwood Weed" is also a humorous classic.

As someone who heard these tunes in the 1970s, glad to see you enjoying this man's music today. I agree with what's been suggested: Wildwood Weed; My Girl Bill; A Real Good Time; Swamp Witch and one more; Cow Patty. And part of the meaning is a reflection of the relative maturity of young men and young women...we men are inevitably catching up with the ladies. 😊

The first "concert" I ever saw was in 1974 at the Indiana State Fair. Jim Stafford and Olivia Newton John performed in a cow barn. They only sang a couple of songs each standing on a plywood stage atop bales of hay, but it was cool seeing celebrities in person. Jim Stafford was famous for his humorous songs...always tongue in cheek. But he was also known as a phenomenal guitarist.

Nice reaction. In 1976, I attended a Beach Boys concert at my college. The Beach Boys gave a horrible performance (I'm still a fan). Jim Stafford was the warm-up act and he gave a wonderful performance which took some of the disappointment away. He had a one man band contraption that let him play multiple instruments simultaneously. Lots of fun and silly songs, but played and sang by a musician with obvious talent.

When I was 15, I was seriously surprised with my first girlfriend. I had zero idea she was interested in me. I was a dweeb and my only talent was to make her laugh. She was way out of my league. She had to send a girlfriend of hers to me to set me straight. Subtle hints were not working. Even when we started dating, I was clueless on how to be a boyfriend. Girls always seemed 5 years ahead of me in the area of relationships. Anyway, that's what I think the song is about!

I always took this song as commentary on coming of age amongst young boys and girls. There is that age when boy start gaining interest in girls, but don't know how to process that attraction. So, they get silly and act immature. And of course girls are a year or so ahead and not interested in the silliness. "And I said 'this frog's for you"'', cracks me up and brings me back in time.
