Marty had a massive crossover hit in 1957 called A WHITE SPORTS COAT. I was in high school and I remember that the song was everywhere, on every radio station. People listened to the radio then like they are on their phones today, so you could hear this song dozens of times a day. The song made Marty a household name back then.

Women were crazy for him. I remember watching a video on KZfaq where Merle Haggard and Marty Robbins performed together. The women screamed when Marty approached the audience.. Merle Haggard did an awesome impression of Marty, by singing one of his songs in front of him. Marty's expression while listening was pretty funny.

Wish more people would react to this song from him, instead of just El Paso. It's like people only requesting or only reacting to Johnny Cash's "Hurt," when he has a huge catalog of hits in his prime that established who he was.

I played this song for my dad when he was in his eighties and my mother, also in her eighties, was in the hospital recovering from a devastating fall. I was born a twin and my twin brother died when we were ten months old so the line about the two little babies was especially poignant. They were a farming family and there were some really hard times, but my mother never complained about the hardships and was always a calming presence. My dad cried.

No. She didn't pass away, but their 2 babies did. True story. So Marty wrote this song. The Song says "When she reaches that River Lord you know what she's worth Give her that mansion up yonder Cause she's through Hell here on Earth Lord Give her my share of Heaven If I've earned any here in this life Cause God I believe deserves it My Woman, My Woman, My Wife" It's definitely worth a relisten, but find the studio version.

Marty Robbins is a great storyteller and has an extensive catalog (yes, everyone suggests "Big Iron" and "El Paso" but also look for "The Master's Call", "Devil Woman" and "Lord, You Gave Me a Mountain"). He served in the Navy in WWII and was also a race car driver and was credited with likely saving the life of Richard Childress when he made a split second decision to turn his car into a concrete barrier while going 160 mph rather than plowing into cars that had wrecked and were strewn across the track in front of him (had he not turned he would have T-boned the driver side of Richard's car).

She didn't pass away. This song however was written for his real wife. He sang the first country song to win a grammy. He was also a raceway driver in NASCAR. I attended 2 of his concerts when he was alive and I can tell you he was a phenomenal performer. He rarely left the stage when he was supposed to. He wrote many of his own songs and songs for others. He sang one song with Clint Eastwood titled Honky-tonk Man in a movie by the same name. He has many great songs but one I would recommend over others is called A Man and A Train.

My Aunts, Uncles & parents had season tickets to Packard Music Hall here in Warren Ohio to see Country Music stars perform. My Aunt had surgery & gave me her tickets for that month(1975/76). She said l could take anyone l wanted. I was so excited & asked my bf if she wanted to go with me & she said yes. She didn't like Country Music. We were teenagers & All l talked about for a week was, "you're gonna fall in love with Marty Robbinson. He has a sexy voice!" My parents picked her up & l kept repeating that statement in the car & at the Hall. My friend really didn't believe me & all she would say was ok. Ronnie Robbins (Martys' son) sang 1st. Then Marty came out & there sat 2 googly eyed teenagers drooling over Marty Robbins. Marty at this time was in his 50's. That man could SING!!!! My friend fell in love with Country Music that nite & soon discovered Conway Twitty & The Statler Brother. Those three were her favorites. I will never forget that nite. I now laugh whenever l think about it. My friend thought l was crazy.😂😂😂

Oh baby girl baby girl. So much to say but I’ll try to make it brief. Interesting that you compared his voice with Elvis. Elvis’ first hit was “That’s All Right”. It was actually a bigger hit for Marty. Marty also recorded “You Gave Me a Mountain”. You can watch Elvis perform it from his Aloha From Hawaii concert. Excellent excellent performance. This song is exactly how I feel about my wife and I would give anything to have heard Elvis perform it. Gives me chills just thinking about it. Another Marty Robbins tune I think you would enjoy….Devil Woman. Thanks for sharing. Accept your blessings today.

No he is just asking God to give her those things when her time comes. Marty wrote this song too. He wrote it especially for his wife whom he married in 1945. The song was released in 1970 and 3 or 4 days after the release Marty went under the knife for a triple bypass. Marty played multiple instruments. He was a singer, actor, songwriter, businessman and even a race car driver. For a great song from Marty which will also tell you a story and give you a history lesson I am leaving a link for The Ballad of the Alamo. He is famous for his story songs. Also worth a listen his trilogy of songs El Paso, Faleena and El Paso City. Here is the Alamo link. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9-lZrJ605ulYGQ.html

You really missed the symbolism here. He says when she crosses that river,( this referring to when your time comes and you leave this world and cross over to the next) and to to how hard give her a place on the hill refers that she has work hard and has had devastating trials in her life so give her a place to rest and if her deeds are not enough take my and add to hers, for I will sacrifice myself for her so as that she may have peace, rest , fore had it not been for her I would not have been the man that I was
