Do you know more about baseball rules than your favorite MLB Announcer? Our first episode of Broadcaster Rules Challenge pits Brewers TV Analyst, Bill "Rock" Schroeder against Royals TV Analyst, Rex "Wonder Dog" Hudler. It is a Categories game with retired MLB Umpire, John Hirschbeck explaining the tough rules questions. Lots of laughs, stories and rules knowledge in this show.

Thanks for bringing some normalcy to my day. Great show. Missed seeing the Reds and hanging out in the booth with the Reds phenomenal crew in Denver last weekend. For controversial plays, your stat guy would either wait for the official ruling on his headset or would run from the booth and find out from the official scorer what the ruling is. However, if Chris Welch was in town, he would always have the correct answer. Stay healthy.

enjoyed the video, but I suppose my complaint would be that this is a "rules challenge", yet about half the questions actually presented were either odd trivia questions (the "keystone position" and the "baltimore chop" are not in any rulebook) or scoring questions, which I admit are technically in the rule book but no one talks about them as baseball rules. if an MLB umpire has never looked at that section of the rulebook, then they aren't rules.

Dave, I have produced "rules" videos but nobody watches them. A strict discussion of baseball rules is boring to most people so I am trying something new with this show. It's more about entertainment, for sure. However, if you want to submit some rules questions then let's talk about that. I'm always looking to improve this site.

@@baseballrulesacademy8398 , I have a question in regards to mlb broadcasters. I think I once heard broadcasters can be bias when announcing for their local team. For instance say I'm an analyst for the Boston Red Sox & I'm announcing or giving analyst commentary on the local sports channel then I can be bias. However say I'm doing a game for fox on Fox sports East, I can't be bias. Is that correct?

I just didn't like the "Do Over" answer. It's not a do over if the pitch counts.

the pitch and the swing are done already before the "do over" part. I still don't like the "do over" answer, but not for that reason. I just think it doesn't convey anything about the rules at hand, nor why it's a "do over". another "do over" is umpire interference with the catcher attempting to retire a runner stealing a base; I'd never call it a "do over" even though for practical purposes that's what it is.

the truest "do over" in baseball I can think of is when the batter steps out of the box without having been granted time, and the pitcher balks upon seeing the batter step out.

15:26 - if I'm being really umpirely picky, the ball is not foul, it's just dead. I know that seems really pedantic, but an umpire taking a certification test has to watch for such pedantry.
