I had a plan this year to take the winner of the ArcheryTalk 2020 Hunting Bow Shootout into the woods with me this year as my hunting bow and I figured show you my broadhead tuning process using that bow.
My set up this year is the Bowtech Revolt with Gold Tip AirStrike arrows and Annihilator broadheads.
I had just given the Revolt a basic tune the night I first took it out of the box, so I figured I'd have a little work to do in order to get broadheads hitting with field points. As luck would have it, I didn't have to touch anything on the bow at all. That is good news for me, but doesn't exactly make for an exciting video.
I did have to do some nock tuning, which I try to explain a little in the video. Basically, I rotate my nocks a quarter turn (using a four-fletch arrow - 1/3 of a turn for three-fletch arrows) and note how the broadhead-equipped arrows fly compared to field points. I've had some arrows with fairly large differences. Though my AirStrikes did benefit by finding the ideal position of the nocks, they performed much better than the Kinetic Kaos arrows I shot in prior years.
In this video I also explain what I do if my broadheads are hitting left/right/up/down compared to field points.
This video was recorded at Peel Archery Club.

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of good insight here. The broadheads I saw at the ATA Show and thought they looked interesting and wanted to try them. Since they are flying so well, I'm going to hunt with them. The arrows (GT AirStrike) I've had for over a year now and I hunted with them last year. Absolutely love how they shoot and love that Gold Tip offers heavier inserts (which I'm using). I didn't change a think about them when I switched to the new broadheads. I am shooting 300 spine arrows and with those heavier inserts I'm on the edge of not being stiff enough. I've got them cut quite short to try and stiffen them up a bit. They are also the easiest arrows to pull from a target that I've ever used.

It actually has more to do with the shaft spine,turning the nock just brings it to light. All arrows will have a "sweet" spot in the spine. Its a spot were the flex is most consistent. You can find it using a hanging weight and spine gauge on each shaft. Bowmar has an awesome arrow building video explaining this.

Another great video, thanks. Would you nock tune before broadhead tune? Also, what if you have a single cam bow with an idler wheel on top? Would you still shim the idler wheel or twist the yoke cable?
@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 3 жыл бұрын
I'd start with nock tuning, as you may notice inconsistent broadhead flight between arrows otherwise. As for a single cam, I've got really shot one much. I assume you'd twist/untwist the yoke cable the same as you would with other cam systems, as it would serve the same purpose.

I'd rather muck with my rest than my string, cables or cam, but that's because I don't have a press. I also shoot a single cam bow. I've got my broadheads grouping close enough to my field points that any discrepancy is on ME.
@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 3 жыл бұрын
That is a fair point. A bow press is a definite luxury that I've got at my club. I'd love one at my house, but I can't justify the cost just yet. Maybe if I have more than a garage distance to shoot.

For left and rights with the deadlock system wouldnt it be opposites bh left of field point move cam to the right? I always thought the BH simulates a paper tear where a bh left of field point would be a nock right tear

I tend to bareshaft tune and find that my broadheads need little to no adjustment after that. Easier on my target.
@ArcheryTalkVideo

Definitely saves on target costs. Though I find bareshafts are very susceptible to hand pressure/torque.

Moving the rest left and twisting the right yoke are opposite actions?

Can I ask your a question please? If your field points are shooting correctly and you know that your bow tuned correctly why do you expect that arrow with completely different geometry should fly as a field point? Why not record the setting on your sight and adjusted to the broadhead. Then when you go back to filed points just return all back to normal.
@ArcheryTalkVideo
@ArcheryTalkVideo 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. For me, the reason I want my field points and broadheads hitting the same is so I remove the variable of having to move my sight/pins when I switch over. Also, if your broadheads aren't flying straight (with field points), your bow probably isn't perfectly tuned. Field points can hide a lot of problems. Why not fix them if you can?

Not sure if you misspoke or I’m not understanding the concept. You said if the broad head is hitting left then move the rest left. I get that but you followed up with saying “or you can move the cams left”. Wouldn’t you move the cams to the right ? It’s basically the opposite of the direction you’d move the rest.

I’m confused now, sorry. Which time did you misspeak? On moving the cam or the rest? I thought for BH tuning you move the rest the opposite direction (left or right) of where the broad head hits in relation to the field point.
@Pattyboybx
@Pattyboybx 3 жыл бұрын
PFontJr from around 3:40 he said twist the right yoke but then said move the cams left using the deadlock cam system. That was just a slip up. Twist the right yoke is the same as moving the cam to the right. If your broad head is hitting to the left, that usually means your nock is angled to the right. You either move the rest left or move your cam right. If your shoot through paper and get a nock right tear, you fix that by putting a twist in the right yoke or by moving the cam to the right. This also means your arrow is planing towards the left with the back of the arrow obviously sticking towards the right.
