Bowhunters, Are the vents in broadhead blades a cause for concern for you? Do vents in blades make the head louder in flight? If so, does this alert game to the approaching arrow??? This and more will be covered in this Myth Buster video.

Thanks for the testing. For your next test I would be interested in fletching noise. Gateway Rayz 2" feathers, Q2i Fusion X ll 2.1" vanes, AAE Stealth vanes, and mini Blazers vanes. Four fletch vs 3 fletch might also be interesting.

Thanks for the testing. I was certainly of the opinion that vents absolutely make more noise. This was very helpful. I am way more convinced that Blazer vanes are the biggest culprit for noise and are easily noticeably louder than the Q2I Fusions I'm currently running. I fletched some arrows up a month ago, some with Blazers (3 fletch), some with the Fusions, both 3 and 4 fletch. The fusions are shorter and lower profile but the big results were the significantly higher impacts I got with the Fusions, especially at long range.....according to my sight tape they were hitting 4-5 yards higher at 60-100 yards and 5 different people referred to how much quieter they were. These are the same fletching I used last fall with Samarias and Masais with 4 fletch and I shot them out to 70 in practice without issue.

My theory on why people perceive arrow noise the way that they do…think of the sound an ambulance makes. When it’s driving towards you it’s a higher pitch than when it’s moving away from you. When going towards you the sound wave lengths get shortened which makes a higher pitch. When going away they get extended, making a longer wavelength and lower pitch. The same is happening with your arrow, but at a much greater speed. The sound that you’re hearing isn’t at all the same as the sound that the deer is hearing (at least as it relates to the arrow flight). Now, with bow noise the sound is going to match what you’re hearing because the bow is a fixed object.

I think the Iron Will vented was quietest.

I can tell you without a doubt that when I tried the Abowyer Whitetail 2 broadheads out of my longbow they were noticeably louder than my VPA solid 3 blades. The abowyer are a lot wider at 1 1/2” with very large vents though

This is great I could never tell the difference either. My buddies and I could tell the difference between feathers and vanes however.

Partition vane noise from broadhead noise and you will find a large difference between vented and non vented. Run a quieter rig and you will also hear a significant difference. On trad gear with a quiet vane configuration broadhead stands out. Fletching is louder than broadhead under this configuration. With trad gear you can run a live blind study and the vented heads stand out.

What a great test and vid. Thank you. Do you think you would be able to hear a difference if you were using a straight vane as opposed to a helical one? Or maybe feathers vs vanes? I use Blazers attached helically and always tell people that they're on the loud side, so broadhead noise is drowned out anyway and is a non issue for me. And I really don't worry about arrow noise in a hunting situation...at least from my own experiences.

I'm sure my 4" feathers are FAR louder than any vented point. The weight and structural integrity of a point have always been my criteria.

Great test. My assumption was that vented would be noisier.

I definitely don't think the deer will care if it's vented or not. Not gonna lie I just think no vents look cooler

Thanks for the test. As you stated the noise difference is insignificant unless you are using some poorly designed heads.

I’ve personally done a fletching test, 2” stock blazers, 2.75” AAE Max stealth with a slight helical, and Max stealth with a Max helical. They all sound the exact same at 30 yards and hitting the target from 60 yards.

Certain vented heads or louder than others, I have done extensive testing with microphones down range. For example 145 grain steel force fat head is the loudest broadhead I’ve ever heard. Magnus stinger is vented and it’s very quiet. VPA vented2 blade very quiet.

Good test, although someone recently shot some chinese counterfeit montecs at local range and they screamed like rockets. Same arrow, change the point and noise stopped. On a quick glance there was no single detail to cause the noise but they were really turning heads. So maybe it's not the vents but some heads just are poorly designed.

I think the NAP and Magnus were slightly louder than the iron will. However, within each broadhead specifically I don’t think taped or vented made a difference.

Just bought the new wedge heads by ELB and they whistle so loud , to me they’re as noisy as the old nap razorbak5 , I don’t know if it makes a difference seeing how fletchings make noise anyways

I have been following Ranch Fairy tuning process and have my shafts grouping well at 40 yards without any fletching. With field points only. NOT with broadheads. . Took a while to get there, but arrow flight looks great. Started at 7 yards to perfect flight with test shafts and a range of field tip weights. Started backing up and flight looks good to at least 40 yards, but have not gone farther. Thanks for your testing

if you shoot broadheads with fletching the arrows fly all over the place and its dangerous. You can only bareshaft with field points. ranch Fairy on YT explains this.

I did but it was not sensitive enough for the .4 second interval. I then got an actual decible meter and it too was of no use.
