Seeing all these online performances and watching the world continue to connect through art no matter what the global situation is... it's just really beautiful. Even if the quality isn't great, the sentiment makes me love it even more than if it were a normal performance.

I disliked this because I LOVE this song and I really don’t feel Darren Criss actually understands the emotion behind the song. Bobby is depressed and at his lowest point this moment in the show. He is trying to rise above that and force himself into a better state of mind. He wants to find love and failing at a time in his life when he “should be settled down.” It is an absolutely beautiful song (The best in one of Sondheim’s best.) but it isn’t a pretty song. It is devastating. Darrin Criss sang a pretty version of this song. I don’t want this song sung pretty. I want this song sung true. There isn’t as moment in his performance that I believe he has actually gone through what Bobby’’s character is really singing about.

I'd have to disagree. Yes, this performance definitely isn't his best work by any means. He breaks character, for lack of a better term, at the beginning there, but I do think that he gets into it towards the middle of the song. Considering that this was recorded over a video call I think he actually conveys quite a bit of the emotion needed. For a version that completely misses the mark in terms of the sentiment of the song, Barbra Streisand is the perfect example. She sounds great, obviously, but there's no emotion behind it at all.
