Broderick Smith (born 17 February 1948)[1] is an English-born Australian multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and sometime actor. He was a member of 1970s bands Sundown, Carson and the Dingoes, 1980s Broderick Smith's Big Combo and he has recorded and performed solo and in duos. He acted on stage in the 1973 Australian version of the rock opera, Tommy, and in minor roles in 1990s TV series, Blue Heelers, Snowy River: The McGregor Saga and State Coroner. Smith has been involved with the writing of some 200 songs and has run workshops on song writing, harmonica and vocals. He is the father of Ambrose Kenny-Smith, who has provided vocals, harmonica and keyboards for the rock band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard since their formation in 2010. Peace out.

Thanks so much for reacting to my request, Nick. Ocean Deep has long been my favourite Australian song. I believe that Andy Durant wrote this on his death bed, aged 25. Broderick Smith, a very underrated singer, absolutely does it justice. Glad you liked it.

THANKYOU to @Donna Chatterton for requesting this! Brod has been my favourite Aust artist for 40 yrs, his voice is beautiful. I have been hoping he would feature here with this, his performance gives the lyrics every bit of justice. Andy Durrant was so young when he passed, I can't imagine what he was feeling when he wrote these words. So wise and calm ... the acceptance and peace for what is to come is humbling. RIP Andy

The beauty and gutt wrenching emotion of this song in the lyrics. Written on his death bed , the analogy of trying to stay afloat in a wild sea battering his body ( sufferring cancer) and anticipating the more peaceful seas and beautiful sunny distant shores of afterlife (when he passes and leaves behind the suffering) brings tears to me eyes nearly every time. Though I can't be absolutely sure, this is my interpretation of what the lyrics mean, and now Dear Broderick has just passed also. 😢

Andrew Durant was an Aussie singer, songwriter and session muso (multi instrumentalist) for heaps of Aussie bands. He died young of cancer so everyone that knew him put on this concert and released the album. I think to raise money for his family.

I'm from Adelaide and played in another band with Andrew Durant back in the late 60s. He died of cancer soon after. Great band , all Australian musicians, most from our town ( Adelaide). Broderick has a great voice. Malcolm Eastick on guitar is a legend. Stars - Andrew's band - would've made Cold Chisel and many other bands from Adelaide a great place which irt was at that time. Thanks for asking Donna. I have the whole concert on DVD. Possibly the last one.

I was his stage roadie on a tour. We did a pub in Bendigo, they had noise problems with the neighbours. We ended up turning off the pa system and Broderick just walked around the room singing arcopello. Man, his voice is amazing. He supported U2, I can attest the fact that one of their crew said to me " these guys are fucking brilliant ".

Hi Nick - i think you may have already reacted to a song from this show? Jimmy Barnes, Renee Geyer etc doing Knocking on Heavens Door ? BTW I'm a fan of Brod Smith. He has been around since 1970 (maybe earlier?) - in bands Carson,The Dingoes, Brod Smith's Big Combo etc. I hope you can find "My Fathers Hands". Love it, an Aussie tribute. Prefer it over the GangaJang song "Sounds of Then" which was a bigger hit in a similar tribute to Australia vein.

As others have mentioned, this was a memorial concert for Andrew Durant who wrote the songs performed at the concert. He died of melanoma cancer and was only young. He was a member of a band called Stars and this concert was performed as a tribute to Andy, by them and several guest artists, such as Broderick Smith, Jimmy Barnes, Renee Geyer, Richard Clapton and others. A few of the songs, including this one were written during the time he knew he was dying. I was lucky enough to be at that concert.

Andy Durant Birth name Andrew MacLeish Durant Born 2 October 1954 Origin Adelaide, South Australia, Australia Died 6 May 1980 (aged 25) Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Genres Country rock Occupation(s) Musician-songwriter Instruments Guitar, harmonica, vocals, mandolin Years active 1972-1979 Associated acts Astra Kahn, Stars Andrew MacLeish Durant (2 October 1954 - 6 May 1980) was an Australian musician-songwriter. He was a member of country rock group Stars (1976-79) providing guitar, harmonica, and backing vocals. He was also a session and backing musician for a range of artists. He died of cancer, aged 25. On 19 August 1980 a tribute performance was held in his honour, with a live double-album recorded by various artists, Andrew Durant Memorial Concert, which was released on 9 March 1981. All but three tracks were written by Durant (and two of those were co-written by Durant). It peaked at No. 8 on the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart and reached No. 40 on the End of Year Top 100 Albums Chart for 1981. Many of Andy’s songs had a peaceful ethereal quality. Check out his band Stars. Songs such as “Look After Yourself” with Andy on guitar sharing lead vocals, “The Last of The Riverboats”, and “West is the Way”. He was considered by his music colleagues, a genius. RIP Andy.

Andrew MacLeish Durant was an Australian musician-songwriter. He was a member of country rock group Stars, providing guitar, harmonica, and backing vocals. He was also a session and backing musician for a range of artists. He was well-known and respected in the music industry. He died of cancer, in May, 1980, aged 25. Memorial concert was held in August, 1980 at the Palais Theatre, St. Kilda, Melbourne, Australia. Artists included Australian Artists: Brod, Jimmy Barnes, Renee Geyer, Richard Clapton and others. Broderick Smith was an English-born Australian (moved to Australia as a kid) multi-instrumentalist, (particularly harmonica-we called 'harp' then), singer-songwriter, music teacher and sometime actor. He was a member of 1960's band Adderley Smith Blues Band (when he was about 18), 1970s bands Sundown, Carson and the Dingoes, the 1980s Broderick Smith's Big Combo, and he recorded and performed solo and in duos. He also had 2 singles on the radio in 1973, while he was with Carson. The Dingoes went to Canada and were successful there. Broderick also played 'the father' in the Melbourne production of The Who's 'Tommy' rock opera at the Myer Music Bowl. When I first heard his single record on the radio, I thought it was a negro singer not the Broderick I know from my teenage years. When he sang loudly, the sound came from the back of his throat and reminded me of black singers. Not only good looking but a real gentleman and very respected in the music world. He died peacefully on 30th April 2023 aged 75. Well known songs: On his own 'Going On Down To The End Of The World' and 'Yesterday It Rained'.. With Carson 'Boogie'. With Dingoes 'Way Out West' and 'Boy On The Run'. With Broderick Smith's Big Combo 'Faded Roses' and 'My Father's Hands' (Lucky To Be An Australian).

This is one of my "Chill songs". As you say it makes you feel Calm. My other favourite one is LRB (Little River Band) Cool Change with Glenn Shorrock singing. Another of Australia's Great 70s-80s bands but they Did make it Big in the US. In fact sadly, one (temporary American ) guitarist, Steve someone, dplit from the band, claimed the name LRB and stole their licence on their song catalogue. On KZfaq look for the Real Little River Band, or Birtles, Shorrock and Goble, the 3 founding Australia n members, and Grrrrrr to the imposters 🤨

I'm 55, I was born in 1967 in Sydney Australia,... I lived in Australia until I was 35 & have lived in America for 20 years & am now a US Citizen,... I miss Australia of yester year :( Australia had so much talent for such a small population :) When I was young & working around Sydney, I enjoyed the old guys,... That Generation of WW2 guys & a little after were "The Quiet Achievers",... No fuss, no bragging, no Soap Box, no Chest Beating & anyone who did got sorted by their peers,... There was none of this modern day hype, Aussies just did their thing quietly & did it very well. I miss that Australia but sadly I can't talk to most Aussies anymore,... Far too many intolerant, arrogant, loud mouthed dicks.
