The Arizona Coyotes could find themselves looking at two scenarios for where they play in the 2024-25 season - and one involves relocation.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reported that the NHL, Coyotes ownership and Smith Entertainment Group have made significant progress on the framework of an agreement to relocate the team to Utah.
Earlier in the day, Seravalli also reported that the NHL was drafting two versions of a league schedule for the 2024-25 season, with one being keeping the Coyotes in Arizona, and the other them playing in Salt Lake City in the event of relocation.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that if a move to Utah is coming, it will be known soon, partly because the arena in Utah is shared with an NBA franchise, so the league would need to know available dates in order to put together a schedule.

Brodie the Coyotes lease was up in Glendale. They did not get evicted. Glendale offered a long lease the Coyotes rejected it. Glendale is too far out. Glendale would not offer a short term lease. So it was hard to stay in Glendale.

The NHL appears to be replicating a Cleveland Browns strategy. Move to another market. Wait until a new stadium is built, return to the original city with a new team, same name.

As a former season ticketholder and PA announcer of the HARTFORD WHALERS, I totally empathize with the fans of the Coyotes. We lost our team in 1997 because our two time convicted felon, Governor John Rowland sacrificed the Whale in order to pursue the Patriots. Obviously, he lost both. Gary Bettman loves big markets. The NHL will eventually return to Auston Matthews' home state. That will be Bettman's swan song before he finally, belatedly retires. (Thank God!)

Thanks Peter. As a former Connecticut resident myself, it sickened me to see the Whalers leave town. They were a Connecticut staple and brought us a lot of state pride especially in the good years (i.e. 86-87 Adams Div Champions). Although a division championship may not have seemed like much at the time, it gave the fan base and the city hope that better days were ahead. Unfortunately that never materialized and as a result, they were eventually gone. Then to add insult to injury they win a cup in Raleigh. I definitely have mixed feelings when I see the Hurricanes wearing the Whaler uniform, kind of hits like a gut punch. So yes I can empathize with the Coyotes fans or any fan base that invests itself in a team only to have the rug pulled out from under them by incompetent and greedy ownership/local government.

That would only be True if Arizona stole the Winnipeg Jets, but that wasn't the case, the Jets ownership decided to move and the Jets and Coyotes fans had no control over it.

@@adamgt4037Jets ownership went broke Shenkarow didn’t want to move but the stadium was too small and he became a Crystal Palace Simon Jordan type figure in Winnipeg (a guy who tried and cared but just couldn’t keep a club afloat in 90’s Canada)

Arizona has had 20 yrs plus to get this figured out and continue to fell. Salt Lake City has a great fan base and Wyoming as well. This gives us another team in the Rocky mountain region and that's a good thing. Salt Lake City is a beautiful city and they will be supported and hopefully they keep their name and colors and this will be their final home. My heart breaks for their fans but for the health of this franchise, this is a great step forward.

What fans are you talking about? I live in Phoenix and most people I've talked to couldn't care less about the Yotes leaving. Feel bad for all the transplants out here who won't get to see their hometown teams beating the Yotes on the ice.

I live in Nottingham (England), home of the Nottingham Panthers EIHL team, we have an arena that has a capacity of 6500 for hockey games, it's regularly been sold out over the years since it opened, it blew my mind to realise that my local team would have MORE fans attending than an actual NHL team could have!!

it's been blowing our minds how low level those games have looked in that building. lol There's shadows on the ice during a televised game and some of the walls are literally curtains to make the spaces for teams. It's been a joke for years now and time it was dealt with.

@@algrundau9441 yep and that's not biggest crowd, our local rivals in Sheffield (think Philadelphia / Pittsburgh kind of rivalry) have a bigger arena, their biggest crowd was just about 9500.

Winnipegger here. Was a fan from the very beginning - the 1972 WHA Jets. It broke my heart when they left for Phoenix. I feel the same way now for the fans of the team. I don't get the people celebrating (except for SLC. I totally get them celebrating). Much love to all those fans who are going through all the emotions right now. I feel for you guys.

We don’t care to have a new Coyotes team in a few years. We finally have a young talented team that we’ve been waiting for for years and now we are losing them?! Getting a new group does not make me feel any better. Having our team keep the Coyotes name and move to Utah would make me feel better! It’s not about the name or the logo, it’s the players.

The difference is Winning had a team and all infrastructure waiting. In this case the league is laundering the team to another city with nothing really established while paying off previous owner to the tune of millions all with the loose promise of maybe returning

@@LargeOhioSon Salt Lake isn't that unestablished for hockey. The NBA Jazz owner has been trying to bring the NHL to Salt Lake for more than 2 years now and the Jazz arena hosted skating sports back when Salt Lake had the Winter Olympics. It's a much better fit than playing in a 5,000 seat arena for another 3 to 4 years.

It is nothing like the Atlanta Thrashers. Atlanta Spirit Group, the owners of the Thrashers, never wanted the team but reluctantly took them because it was the only way to get what they wanted, the Atlanta Hawks and the rights to Philips Arena, and both teams were included in the sale as a package. ASG deliberately made it where no one willing to keep the team in Atlanta would be able to, nor were they seriously looking at local buyers. They wanted the relocation money. The Coyotes, on the other hand, seem to have a committed owner, but the municipal authorities and residents are thwarting the Coyotes organization at every turn. Atlanta also had much better attendance and were well supported until the last year when rumors began to fly of their departure (Oakland As similarity). The Atlanta area doesn't have the same resistance that Phoenix has. They have two committed potential ownerships with arena plans and municipal and county backing, and the funding was agreed to over a few months span. It is why Atlanta is likely to be back in the league by 2027.

@@LargeOhioSonsalt Lake has an arena that will work for hockey temporarily. They have played multiple preseason NHL games there. The sight lines aren’t perfect, but it’s infinitely better than mullet

Recently it has been clarified that they left Glendale because the couldn't come to terms on the length of the new lease agreement. Not unpaid bills.

In other words they were too cheap to pay the rent. They were also bottom of the league in attendance as well. The team sucked so can’t blame fans for that. It is kind of amusing that they now can afford to buy land and build a new arena. Yet they couldn’t agree on the rent in Glendale and also didn’t want to spend money to make the team competitive.

The damage done to the franchise happened long before the current owner. He at least appears to have the money to make the team work if they get the stadium thing worked out. As a Canadian who lived through the near destruction of Canadian hockey across all the former WHA markets, including almost losing the Oilers to Houston, I have mixed feelings about these former Canadian franchises. I used to really dislike the Coyotes because they were grabbed from Winnipeg in a moment of business weakness not fan disinterest. But as I have gotten older I have come to understand both the business side and the fan side from the Phoenix area perspective. Those fans of the team as you said did nothing wrong other than get constantly screwed over with bad owners making terrible choices. And like Winnipeg are the losers here. It took Winnipeg 16 years to get a team back, Quebec City will likely never get another one. And for that I am sad for them and it feels unfair. However Phoenix can be a functioning hockey market just as viable as the one in Dallas, Nashville, San Jose (if you exclude the current issues), LA and Vegas. Some good teams, long term success and maybe a cup here and there and you can survive and thrive in these markets. I think in this case you HAVE to move the franchise but keep the team and name in Phoenix (Metro) maybe get the owner to get his stuff sorted on the arena and come back hopefully stronger than ever.

The difficult thing for the coyotes in Arizona is that they had to compete with the other local major league teams and college programs for support, a fight they unfortunately lost

Thank you for making such a great piece on the Yotes! I'm a lifelong fan, born and raised in AZ, and it really sucks to see this happen. It means a lot as a fan to see someone outside of AZ report on this with some compassion and understanding. We've dealt with some terrible owners and lots of haters, but this is different. This really hurts our community and our state. You nailed it with the "Community First" until it comes down to business. Thanks again, Brodie!

I've watched you on the Sharks broadcasts, the Sharks have a great broadcast team. This Vancouver fan always thought San Jose was the best fan-based team in Cali. From expansion the arena was packed, the brand was loved by NHL cities. Tough times today in the cyclical world of sports, but the Sharks to me were Cali's hockey hot spot!

I feel bad for being excited, as a Utah hockey fan. 2028 is a long way away and the thought of being able to go see NHL games like an hour from my apartment as early as this fall is genuinely a thrill. At the exact same time, my heart hurts for the fans in Arizona. This team has literally had arena woes for most of my adult life. They deserve better and I was happy for them when it looked like the land auction was just a formality and the team finally got the break they needed. Hopefully the talk of Meruelo getting first dibs on expansion if he can get the arena situation figured out is true. I want EVERY good fanbase to be well-served. (They're almost all good fanbases to be frank, even low attendance isn't always reflective of poor fan support.)

It's been 27 seasons (26 played) since the Original Winnipeg Jets moved to Arizona... The KC Scouts (2)/Colorado Rockies (6) got 19 combined less seasons before moving to NJ finally The California Golden Seals (9)/Cleveland Barons (2) got 16 less combined seasons combined before being essentially folded into the Minnesota North Stars. Atlanta based teams had 8 less combined seasons (Flames 8, Thrashers 11) before moving to Calgary & Winnipeg. The Minnesota North Stars had 2 less seasons (24) before the Sharks were created (an expansion, yes, but it was pretty much the Sharks getting the Seals Franchise in essence) and the same number of played seasons before moving to Texas due to the same struggles and Norm Green's dalliances (and a few other things) The Original Winnipeg Jets and Quebec Nordiques had 16 and 17 NHL seasons before moving due to the depressed Canadian dollar and contracts being all based in USD The Hartford Whalers had 18 seasons before moving since in spite of a lot of controversy surrounding the pre-move state of affairs. Draw your own conclusions.

There are a number of other factors to consider to the facts you have presented. Aside from the Thrashers, the Scouts, Seals, Barons, Flames and Rockies all pre-date Gary Bettman's arrival in the NHL. Norm Green's questionable practices also pre-date Bettman's appointment as Commissioner. In the case of the relocations of the three former WHA teams, they were all casualties of a League that had not only been subverted by a bunch of New York lawyers, but also an unfavorable CBA in which the owners failed to obtain a salary cap. Players' salaries continued to escalate out of control until a decade later, when nearly two-thirds of the League's owners advised Mr. Bettman that the money-losing simply could not continue.

Nordiques was not a financial issue. Owner was a plain and simple douche. That's why Lindros refused to play for the team. This is why Quebec City is high on the list for expansion.

@@masternilocalso, Nordiques ownership wanted a salary cap established wich Bettman said, no, you’re too small of a market move along. Funny enough, salary cap was established a few years later. With salary cap and hockey revenues redistribution in place nowadays, the Nordiques would had done great. They even have a brand new state of the art arena wich seats 18,000 people, something that even Salt Lake City doesn’t have…

The difference between them and the Coyotes is that none of those other teams were the pet project of the NHL Commissioner. The Coyotes trace their origin directly back to Bettman, who proudly and confidently declared that he would be the one to bring hockey to the desert. For the Coyotes to be exiled from Arizona will be the ultimate black mark on Bettman's tenure as Commissioner, and it's likely he'll never be able to show his face around the other franchise owners again after trying so desperately to save his baby and still failing in the end. Simply put, the end of the Coyotes is the end of Bettman's career, and he knows it, hence why he's willing to do anything short of sacrificing his firstborn to keep the Yotes in Arizona.

Salt Lake is really pushing to get another Winter Olympics so there is the need/desire to build a large hockey arena for that. In fact, the IOC is visiting Salt Lake this week as part of the Olympic bid process. The SLC area has the 12,600 seat Maverik Center where their ECHL team plays, there's the Delta Center that can have an ice rink (and could host other Olympic events such as figure skating) and another large arena could make their bid even more successful. So, the NHL could see the future is brighter in SLC even if the Delta Center isn't the ideal hockey venue in the short-term.

The problem with Mullett Arena was that the Tempe deal failed. It may have worked as a 1-2 year home while a new barn was definitely being built (similar to teams in other sports who temporarily move to an older or smaller venue while their permanent home is built), but when the Tempe deal fell through and there was no viable exit strategy, the team would have been best off begging Glendale to let them in, because the Gila River Arena was (when I last went there like 10 years ago) a perfectly acceptable NHL level venue. Not the best in the league but certainly not the worst.

I believe the Utah branding applies only to MLB. That stadium project is a statewide tax. The downtown entertainment center is funded through a city wide tax.

There are coyotes in Utah btw. Also, I think what freaked the league out was lack of specificity on that Scottsdale (north Phoenix) location. There is no way the Coyotes owner can develop that himself. Where are the partnerships?

I agree there are coyotes in Utah just like they are here in Bay Area California so 24-25 Utah Coyotes and allow the great hockey fans of the Salt Lake Area name them for 25-26 it’s not painful at all their fan base will triple with the team they have right now

I feel bad for the franchise, just so many things have happened from Winnipeg to now. I understand people are saying what about Quebec, Atlanta, (insert at least 3 other locations), but the move to Utah makes sense with divisional alignment, it's a quick and easy thing. Also the league is making 2 versions of the next season schedule, it just makes sense for the league to have a back up plan. Maybe Utah gets the Coyotes short term as a way to find out if there is the hockey market they want. A "trial period" to see if they can get a season ticket base/corporate base while the arena is built in Scottsdale would be a unique situation

They should do their due diligence before moving to SLC. It is the Jazz owner trying to get money for a new arena for his team and then the hockey team will be sold once again. We won't be able to bring in enough fans to keep the NHL team , we can just barely keep an ECHL team afloat here so this is a bait and switch move. Bad idea.

@@masterniloc Uh no, the franchise has just barely held on by going to the ECHL because attendance was so bad in the early 2000's. That's not something to brag about and it certainly won't bring in the number of fans needed for a successful NHL franchise. This is only for the Jazz owner to get a new stadium for the NBA and help with SLC's latest Olympic bid. Give it a couple of years and the team will be sold again. SLC isn't the right place for an NHL team.

I am a firm believer that hockey will work anywhere and grow under the right conditions. Had the NHL not come to San Jose in the early 1990s when I was growing up there, I would not have become a hockey fan. The "right conditions" are a modern arena, competent ownership group, effective community outreach and marketing, and the on-ice product. The Yotes have had a difficult existence with nearly none of those conditions over the years; instead years of itinerant uncertainty and unending drama. I feel for the Coyotes fans who have stuck through all this BS through the years enduring "hockey the hard way" and hope they will get a new version of their team under better circumstances. As for Utah, Ryan Smith and Co. better have a solid game plan to open their new SLC arena. Delta Center would be an America West Arena style beginning to the market with basketball-specific (Barclays) sightlines, generally awful. They need to minimize their stay in that building or perhaps work out a deal to play at Maverik Center in WVC where the capacity is lower but at least more appropriate for hockey.

That was the kicker with Tempe - the citizens were voting against _specifically the Coyotes_ being in Tempe, not against having a hockey team in general. After seeing the way that franchise has been run like an absolute circus, they firmly and decisively declared that they wanted that clown show nowhere near their town. Add even the slightest modicum of competence to the ownership and management of that team, and I have a feeling that vote might have had quite a different outcome.

With regards to the impact on hockey itself in the Phoenix area. There is an NCAA division 1 hockey team in town. College hockey is vastly underrated. The Sun Devils should be supported.

I fully agree.. this feels like the Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens situation redone in NHL clothes.. just like the browns, just as things are starting to look like they have a new venue.. teams relocation... I think part of the Yotes problem is so many here are not natives (yes, I'm in the Valley)... they are transplants from other parts of the country. Like myself, I have a team that I love from when I grew up and I have not replaced that loyalty (even if they have forgotten what playoffs are).. I just get sick of teams not happy with their venues... when I was a kid, playing in mullett would not even be more than a mention.. today, if it's not a cathedral.... they might as well be playing on a frozen pond.... and the NHL is not alone...

The other thing is, Phoenix is a bandwagon town. The Coyotes' problems started when they found that America West Arena (which was built for the Suns, and the ice rink was an afterthought) was never going to work, the planned replacement in SCOTTSDALE was shot down by the local pols, and they would up in Glendale nowhere near their fan base in the East Valley. (I lived in Mesa, and with the traffic, I would have to leave my home at 4:30 just to make it before a 7:30 faceoff.) The team started losing, and the only sellouts were when Chicago and Detroit came to town, and the barn would up being filled with folks who traveled or moved to AZ from those cities. (Much like what will happen to the A's in Lost Wages ... if they get there.)

@@FischerFan Jerry Moyes, who was majority owner with Steve Ellman, wanted to sell the team to Balsillie because he was willing to overpay, but the NHL wouldn't allow it because they didn't want a team in Hamilton, ON. So Moyes put the team in bankruptcy to try and force the sale to Balsillie, but it didn't work. Steve Ellman is ultimately the root cause of the issues with the Coyotes because he also built the stadium in Glendale instead of the East Valley because he was developer for the Westgate district in Glendale and it was better for his other businesses, not the Coyotes. Bettman allowed Ellman, then Moyes, to run roughshod over him and he's been trying to correct that mistake for 20 years now.

Brodie, let me give you a behind the scenes issue to look into. The land had a deep pockets bidder who was going to bid against the Coyotes. It was the Mayo Clinic which is occupying a huge piece of land in the same area and wanted to obtain the same land the Coyotes wanted, for expansion. Problem two- Scottsdale uppity ups are anti apartment and AM’s 1900 units was strongly opposed behind the scenes. I told you months ago that no new arena was going to get built.

The Phoenix metro area has **six** arenas of various sizes in various locations. If what is now the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix had been designed to accommodate hockey, much of the current turmoil could possibly have been avoided. There's no blame here. Jerry Colangelo had gotten word that the NHL wasn't interested in expanding to Phoenix at that time, so built the new America West Arena to be the best possible basketball venue - and he succeeded. There are other possibilities outside of building a **seventh** (repeat, seventh) arena in metro Phoenix, if some support could be gathered. One possibility could be to patch things up with the city of Glendale, and move back into Desert Diamond Arena - a very nice venue. Another would be to replace Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the state fairgrounds in central Phoenix. The "Madhouse on McDowell" as the Coliseum was called when the Suns played there (before 1992) is pretty dilapidated. And a new arena and other improvements could help revitalize the fairgrounds.

I’ve from Canada but have been to 3 games in Phx. 2 in Glendale and 1 at Mullett. I saw a lot of passionate and loyal fans. I also feel bad for them. If they do move it’s extra sad because they’re building such a great core with Schmaltz, Durzi, Guenther, Cooley, Doan, Keller, Moser, Ingram and many good prospects in the pipeline. They are on the verge of being a really great team.

That isn't how it looks from outside Arizona, honestly. It seems to me, Meruelo exhausted all options and the opposition from Scottsdale is more of a critical blow than it might have sounded like upon first reports. The Meruelo group put all their eggs in that basket, but if Ortega can put his finger on the scales saying "this may be the biggest bid, but it is not the best for these reasons..." I'd be far more inclined to blame Ortega for torpedoing the effort. What's happening now just feels like Meruelo, the NHL, and Ryan Smith scrambling to adapt to a situation that changed radically, quickly.

He wouldn’t have much say if an arena got built or not . Also, he did walk back his comments the next day . The ownership should’ve met with him and cleared up any concerns ahead of time .I do agree that they should have not put all of their eggs in one basket.

I disagree with nearly everything said. I am a Coyotes fan, well, It's my 3rd favorite NHL team since I am east coast based. But I have seen them play at 6 different NHL arenas. Since the early 2010s they have always been questionable if they were to stay. Bettman always put out his influence to keep them in Arizona even though it was clearly just not working. When Vegas and Seattle were rumored to be getting a team, it was always a question if they were just going to relocate the Coyotes. Then there was Mullet Arena obviously not a good sign. Then the Tempe vote rejecting a new arena. Every season we are wondering if the team would get moved. This is not a surprise to anyone paying attention. I would prefer them to move over wondering if the team will even be there next year while every other team is wondering if their draft picks or trades will pan out.

No, the State of Arizona has made it clear that they care more about not spending any money than anything else in this world. In spite of a couple of fairly big cities, most of this state is "red" and they fear spending a dime on anything. They apparently have no idea of the income sports franchises can bring in. So, mayor-loudmouth and his type can take all the credit in the world when the team leaves. I still can't believe that the State of Georgia is still given consideration after losing two hockey teams. For those of us who actually love hockey...screw the states that don't care. We don't care, either. Honestly, having watched the Arizona Coyotes (cool name, by the way) as they drafted some terrific players, only to end up trading them, selling them, taking on dead contracts. For the owner of the team, being forced to play in a stadium that holds around 46oo seats is a total joke. But then, the state couldn't care less if the team has money to pay its players. So, that's it. Now people in this state can return to chasing roadrunners down the highways...to nowhere. Brodie, you don't have to be so kind to these people. If bet0tin-man thought there was money to be made in this state, then the demographics had to line up-originally. But, when a state turns against a sports/the sport of hockey, then just leave!

As far as I understand this; The owner of the Coyotes would sell the team to the NHL not Salt lake. The NHL then sells the team to Ryan Smith and makes a 200million or so profit to be divided among the league owners after the NHL takes their cut. Coyotes team ownership then gets 5 years to establish infrastructure then can claim a franchise. What is not clear ; how much do they have to pay for the reclaiming of the Coyotes. Do they have to pay market value or just pay the exact price the NHL purchased the team for?

the actual decision was made quickly but we cant forget they have been supported by the other teams in the league financially almost their whole existence, i love the kachina logo, its nostalgic for me.. same goes for the panthers as well though the only reason the discussion stopped was the team actually started performing. When florida stops playing well, the fans will go with it, thats the life of ice hockey in the south. Id see a game at Mullet if it was a realistic possibility for me on the east coast but i couldnt imagine wanting to spend the money for season tickets in that rink. People have been giving Winnipeg flak for their lower capacity arena and thats three times the size of Mullet and they fill their seats

The unfortunate part that I don't think many realize is how hockey in Arizona impacted the league. I'll always say that Auston Matthews, the Leafs' first overall pick, plays in the NHL because of the Coyotes, because he was exposed to the game at an early age. So, I don't know how anyone can dismiss the 'Yotes as not a team to be taken seriously or whatever, in terms of off-ice impact.

Yokes fan here. I’m 19 and only grew up knowing them as Arizona, I know they were from Winnipeg first, but there always been Arizona too me. I often hear this move compared to the Oakland raiders/A’s move but it isn’t quite the same. Even if the coyotes move to Utah, I’ll still probably cheer for them, that won’t change, but what will change is live hockey. I was raised on hockey, going to games as often as possible, and knowing that I won’t be able to share the live hockey experience with my little sister, and my kids is devastating. If an As fan still wants baseball, the giants arnt that far away, for us, we need to go to LA or Vegas if I wanted to share hockey with my future family. It’s a dagger to the god damn chest, not just for losing an “Arizona team” but losing the live hockey experience, and not being able to share it with the future.

I don't know if I agree with the 'fans have no direct control' part of this video. I'm a Nashville Predators fan and back in 07 the city almost lost the team for all the same reasons... non traditional hockey market, small fanbase, no support, and so on. Anyway, long story short, the team's original owner(who owns the Wild now) was going to sell the Predators to a Canadian business man who was going to move the team. The uproar got the owner to agree to look at other offers, and a group of wealthy Predators' fan bought the team.

sort of but not exactly - yes team was in jeopardy - and Jim Ballsillie attempted to buy the team. It was the last attempt he made at his quest to move a 2nd NHL team to the GTA - he was going to move them to Hamilton - Copps Colliseum at least for the short term until they built a permanent home , They even went as far as selling tickets - that is when G Bettman- jumped in and said - the fuck you are ! That is why that did not go through - it never was going to go through - that was one of multiple dances - Ballsillie and Gary Bettman did together - until Gary did the death punch and got the Iphone created.

I went to Coyotes games when they played downtown. But living in the east valley, the drive to the new arena out west was just too far. They would have had more fan base if they had stayed centrally located.

The biggest lesson from these moves should be, "don't get emotionally invested in sportsball teams.". These leagues are nice enough distractions, but they will exploit your nostalgia of going to games with your daddy or Grandpa to the hilt to get all kinds of corporatist goodies, and will leave just as easily when cities and fans start acting as if they are municipal property. Go to the games. Have fun. But don't think they are "your team," because they aren't. Treat them as the disposable entertainment product they really are.

I know Brodie brought this up, but I wonder what SLC getting the Coyotes means for their MLB bid. I don't know if they're a large enough market to have three of the big four (four of the big five if you include MLS). Maybe baseball being a summer sport means that there won't be a big conflict with the two winter sports teams.

They should have just moved to Ontario California or Coachella Valley until a new arena was built in the metro Phoenix area. Both of those areas are hosting hockey and they are easier for the fans to get there and they would build another fan base just like the New Orleans pelicans did when they played in OKC.

The problem is that like Winnipeg 1.0 before, the coyotes have been mismanaged up until this point which also reflects the product on the ice, with competent ownership and a nhl arena arizona would be a good market

we've been hockey fans for over 50 years, and been to coyotes games and asu sun devils games this year at mullett , great college hockey venue , but certainly not big enough for nhl games , coyotes have a great nucleus of young players , fun to watch and play hard every night. gut wrenching to whisk them away overnight. murello best to not show his face in arizona ever again.

In some ways I wonder if this is a way to get Phoenix area politicians to offer some sort of assistance in regards to infrastructure. Clearly just having renderings and a piece of land isn’t enough given the history. If they have tangible infrastructure agreements in place who knows.

So what? We've had minor league hockey here since the 70's but we don't have the fan base to support an NHL team. It's going to last a few years at best and they will be moving again. Bad idea, pick a city who really wants a team.

You sound like a hater of Ryan Smith and probably wasn't old enough to remember the SLC Golden Eagles hockey of the 70s,80s and 90s that sold out the Salt palace consistently. SLC had a rich Hockey history and will fall in love with it again.

@@ericacottle3507 That's where you are wrong, I had season tickets to the Golden Eagles and saw the championship games. I also remember how the previous Jazz owner treated the team. Not so great. We only got hockey back due to the Olympics. I had season tickets to the Grizzlies too so I love hockey. But hockey took a back seat to the Jazz and the attendance has never been consistent since than. I don't hate Smith but don't trust him either. I hope people will support the team but I am skeptical. Local media are also lousy at covering the sport so if they don't publicize it well that won't help. Let's see how it is going after the novelty wears off.

The yotes had a series of owners that keep getting in their own way, including one owner who tried like hell to relocate the team to Hamilton, ON and another owner tried to relocate them to Portland. It feels like Alex Merulo didnt get the chances his predecessors did get. Remember, this move the. team and you get an expansion team happened in MLS with Columbus & Austin in 2018

I still doubt the coyotes move honestly. If this purchase drags out past the end of May, the NHL may just keep the coyotes at mullett. Definitely still hope for Arizona.

I’ve never been a fan of Bettmans push to keep the coyotes in Arizona, but I still feel awful for the fans that are getting left behind. There were a lot of problems with Arizona but the fans were never one

When they went to Glendale in 2003. They had 21 years to figure it put when they always knew Glendale was temporary. They didnt want to sign a long term lease with Glendale because they wanted it to be temporary. They weren't paying their bills (not the reason why they were evicted it was not wanting a long term lease) They play in a college arena with a 4 year lease to lose a public voting to build an arena in Tempe Once the talk during the All Star break about Coyotes we find out they're waiting for a public auction that may or may not go through. This team had way too many chances. And I used to love Phoenix Coyotes back in 1996. But other teams had to relocate for a fraction of this. Time to move on. Utah was never the top of my list for an NHL team. Quebec and Houston were. Even Atlanta. But they didn't make an effort. Utah did. If the fans want it and an owner can afford it. So be it.

10:30 Utah Grizzlies is currently the name of an ECHL team already playing in the city (not at Delta Center, they have their own barn that they share with an NBA G League team). The ECHL team is I believe the 2nd Utah Grizzlies franchise. It has some history in the city so it would be appropriate should the ECHL team decide to leave. I've heard Boston has a huge problem with the team using a bear name though

We had the Salt Lake Golden Eagles from the 70's through the 90's until the Jazz owner sold them. We won the 2002 Olympics and a new hockey arena was to be built. Quebec moved to Denver then Grizzlies moved to SLC from Denver and played a few years in the Delta Center then to the hockey arena after the Olympics. We can barely keep that team here so how do they think they can bring in enough fans to support an NHL team? It's just a con job so Smith can get an arena for the Jazz. Then we will have no hockey left here when he sells the team a few years down the road.

Arizona had almost 30 years and 5 ownership changes to get there act together. It’s time for a reset button the rest of the league shouldn’t be constantly punished because this organization couldn’t get there act together. Maybe Utah will treat an NHL franchise with the respect it deserves. If you’re serious about hockey in Arizona do it the right way from scratch, besides it will be better to build a new team in your own image than being the forgotten remnants of an old Canadian market.

Honestly as a Coyote fan since they arrived here it was coming. Im a transplant from St. Louis where Hickey is a staple like baseball. The really sad thing about all this is that Az has NEVER had an actual NHL team. Sure in the beginning they had decent ownership that Loved and had a lot if Hickey knowledge. However since then this team has never had competant ownership, no funds and the team was used for tax write offs. Yes the team has diehard fans but through all if this seasin after season debacles of will they move, won't they move? Then the teams are horrendous year after year coupled with the money needed for tickets ...Doesnt build a fanbase and wouldnt anywhere else either. When Meruelo took over his lies and lack of commitment to fans was quickly turned even diehards from this team. Now with an actual future thus jackass is goingbto sell and take away the team We have bern waitingbfor all these years since Bill Armstring started to build. Its far too laye to talk about expansion that ship sailed 20 yrs ago. If the Team leaves then the NHL leaves period. The duehards that we have now are going to be older maybe too old to carevif We get an expansuon. So in the words of most Yotes fans " Screw You Meruello if the team leaves feel free to follow them out if Arizona."

That sucks. I'll miss the 'Yotes. They've long been my second favorite team after the Sharks just because I loved the name and the logo (the howler one, I could take or leave the kachina logo). Hope to see the Desert Dogs back.

I get it, everyone's jumping to conclusions, but so much of this still doesn't make sense. Why would Meruelo sell at a loss, then pony up the 1 billion expansion fee in a few years to get the team back? It still seems to me like all of this news about 2 schedules is blown a little out of proportion. Doesn't it make sense that since the Yotes admitted everything hinges on this land auction, that having meetings about relocation, team sale, and a 2nd backup schedule, is just a way to establish plans B, C, and D? I mean, we will know on June 27th whether or not the arena is happening. It's a definite deadline. Wouldn't any business person make sure to have backup plans in place when such a deadline is looming?

Hockey will still be in the valley with ASU which has used their warm weather to attract some Canadian talent to the valley instead of playing Juniors in Canada. I was 6 when I attended the last whalers home game and their departure early into my love of hockey hurt. As time went on I began to enjoy college hockey a ton and now I am a UConn men's hockey season ticket holder. Even though I became a flyers fan and used to watch them nonstop as a kid and college student the last decade or so I have lost interest in the NHL reg season and enjoyed college hockey's parity and environments much more. I think if Yotes fans that decide to support ASU will see while losing the NHL is tough entertaining hockey is still in their metro via ASU.

no the Browns had a place to play. That was all about money for the owner this is about not having a home for way too long and playing in an arena that's a joke for the NHL. We have rinks in small cities up here with better capacity and legitimate NHL grade facility. Time to pack it up!

This probably has deeper ripple effects people aren't thinking about. If there aren't teams in non traditional markets reaching new fans bringing in newer people to hockey to watch and play hockey the league doesn't get an Auston Matthews and whomever is the next one from Phoenix or Vegas or whatever non traditional hockey market is next to produce the next big star to the nhl

Rush hour traffic puts the corporate sponsors & majority of season ticket holders 1+ hours away. New location should be 30-60 minutes for those groups.

I agree with you completely, and this is why I could never be a good businessman. From an analytical perspective, the club just hasn’t worked in Phoenix after so many lifelines, and maybe it’s time to stop throwing good money after bad. From an emotional perspective, there is nothing wrong with hockey in Arizona - the fans are there and they deserve better. It’s the management of the team that has been problematic (sounds like Atlanta). Maybe somebody else can run it better. And as you said, how can we trust the owner to build and afford a grandiose complex on raw land when he can’t succeed with some less ambitious efforts? I also find it a bit unfair how SLC seemed to jump to the front of the line in acquiring a team just because they’ve made noise about it. But who says it has to be SLC? Part of me would like to see Houston or Atlanta outbid SLC and, if the team is to be sold, have it go to one of those markets. Part out of spite, admittedly, but Atlanta has been tortured too and Houston is full of potential.
