I propose we start calling all actual Wayland shills "Brodies" In more serious commenting, I'm looking forward to plasma 6. Because I have a couple of issues with plasma 5. That are essentially at a point of won't fix until plasma 6 kind of state and I'm hoping my KVM stops crashing the shell. Also, we're still seeing the snap to straight down interaction on KDE at least with Nvidia, so I'm hoping that gets fixed with plasma 6 as well. And finally game scope is still broken with Nvidia and I'm hoping that gets an update here soon to fix it because I would like to use gamescope even if I don't technically have to

@@terminalvelocity4858 - Yeah, KDE is kind of why I moved away from Mint. Sure, it looks nice and like Windows, but that can also be a drawback. Functionally, it's mostly ok, though Mabox and Openbox somehow hit it right for me. Still has it's quirks, but many of them are common enough on any Linux distro. For instance, it would be nice to have an uninstaller that can take care of the externals so you don't have to hunt them down in the tree and root folders. Also, need to figure out the keys, and if there's a way to switch them off when a program running on Wine needs to use them. It seems like it should since it works with native Linux applications.... mostly.

Thanks for the coverage as usual, Mr. Wayland Shill :) The xdph rewrite was really needed and turned out extremely positive. The codebase was getting very, very bad with the fact that -wlr is written in C, by many people, etc, while the rewrite could be done in a much more memory-safe and generally more convenient C++. Additionally it's now waay easier to support other portals, which might be handy in the future. Hyprland to overtake gnome in 2024? :P

Hi @vaxryy, I have a question. At 60HZ any Wayland compositors mouse feels slow and laggy it ruins the experience, but at 144HZ, the mouse feels much more smooth and responsive. An example is Xorg, the mouse still feels tight at 60HZ, at 144HZ even better. But on Wayland it is much slower and ruins the experience at 60HZ.

For anyone interested in gaming on Hyprland: you can make the screen tearing protocol work globally for *all* fullscreen applications. Just insert the environment variable "env = WLR_DRM_NO_ATOMIC,1" and set the variable "allow_tearing = true" for preparations, and add the window rule "windowrulev2 = immediate, fullscreen, title:.*" into your hyprland configuration file. Cheers. EDIT: If you run kernel 6.8 or higher, then you don't need the environment variable and can just set it up without it.

I had no idea about wayland and x11 just a year ago, when I started to daily drive Ubuntu after 20+ years on Windows and Mac. The only problem was to bind alt+ijkl to arrow keys (as I’ve done in MacOS within 15 minutes) - every manual suggested I use X11, so I switched to X11 and experienced everything you described - dragging window is lagging and glitching, everything is flickering and I felt like it’s some hobby project and not a mature OS. It lasted an hour, then I switched back to wayland, installed some key remapping tool and never looked back

I have tried Hyprland in my NixOS setup and all I can say is I fell in love. Though, the only thing stopping me from transitioning to be my daily driver is the need of setting up all (waybar, keybinds for very basic stuff like lowering volume, night screen protector, etc). And yes I know there is an insane amount of dotfiles repos that I can simply copy, but my stubbornness of doing all from zero to fully understand it is my worst enemy, sum it the lack of free time 😂.

I've been daily driving hyprland for many months now, the odd hiccup here or there, but generally solid. A couple of times settings syntax changed and caught me off guard. I probably should read the changelog more often, but Vaxrry does have a habit of commiting faster than I have cups of tea, and I'm very British. Good tip on the tearing setting, I'd not seen that one (see comment above about change logs 😅) It's been the first environment in a long time that has stopped me hopping. Though I'm contemplating trying Nobara with hyprland crowbared on top at somepoint. Time for a VM.

The problem of the portal appearing again and again is also a thing on KDE. When I want to screen share from Firefox it opens the portal and as soon as I select something and press "Okay" it opens again, for a while even immediately closing itself again and then cycling that a few times. In OBS it mostly works first-try. So maybe that's a Firefox or GTK problem.

Using Hyprland on NixOS with a GTX 1660 Super... It works great! But I had some NVIDIA-specific issues that were annoying the hell out of me... But fortunately, as I have an iGPU on my Ryzen 5 3400G, I am able to simply use NVIDIA Prime, just like on a laptop, and everything since has been phenomenal. Won't go back to X11, that is for sure.

Brodie, do you have any plans of using a KDE Plasma addon for auto tiling? I switched from Qtile to Plasma using Polonium (successor to ~~Bismuth~~) on X11. It's actually a usable auto tiler. Wayland still doesn't have remoting support yes? Can't e.g. forward one application with a gui to a native or wsl windows instance since there is no supported compositor (weston-mirror does not do this). Plus it isn't default installed almost anywhere. Until then it is essentially in packaging limbo hell, and can only be run with a dedicated xserver to handle those tasks.

Well, X11 (or Compiz or Unity) seems to struggle a lot with my two-monitor setup (one laptop screen and one extra HDMI monitor, both of them 1920x1080p@60Hz) and flickers a lot when there hasn't been a visual update to the whole screen within the last three seconds. So I switched to Wayland+KDE, which I absolutely love. But it breaks some things (mainly that apps cannot position their own windows or set their own icon), like LibreOffice opening poth the presenter and the audience presentation windows on the screen my mouse cursor is on; moving one of them to the other screen breaks the visual updating of the audience window. But everytimes I switched to KDE on X11 it would be unusable for me because it doesn't have touchpad gestures. And back to Unity and it would violently flicker. And somehow logging off from Unity hangs permanently after all visual elements are removed, so I just have my desktop wallpaper and my mouse cursor on top. That's it.

That's you putting words into my mouth and then arguing against - I did not use the word "ridiculous", the words I would use are "unnecessary" and "poseurs". "Unnecesary" because the reason you have virtual desktops is to be able to switch between virtual screens as you need them, and given my job is around Linux also, I stick to the "lowest common denominator" and have an optimal workflow using one screen because that's how I often find myself on a customer site with just a laptop. My eyes can fix on one screen at a time, and one application at a time - and I have enough patience, and a good enough environment, to not be that concerned with a 50 millisecond wait to get to a secondary virtual desktop with a hot key. "Poseurs" because for "gaming wankers" where everything is about playing "Top Trumps" with you PCs on social media to get the biggest numbers - highest FPS, most Ryzen cores, most expensive GPU purchased by mummy and daddy for Christmas, most simultaneous 4K monitors making my workstation look like a Boeing 747 flight deck, etc. etc. Good, that should be clearer for you now and require less "hoping" on your part.

I have recently reworked my sway setup and used the time to also port it to Hyprland. All in all, it seems that depending on what you look at, Hyprland and sway have vastly different amount of polish. Hyprland is much more polished in terms of visuals, in terms of Portal support, and generally in tackling bugs and features that actual users care for. Sway is quite lacking in some of these regards, delegating lots of features people want to "lol, you can make a PR if you need that feature", most notably the missing window capture and output mirroring. However, in some cases, I have found Hyprland to be quite infuriating and underpolished compared to sway, mostly due the configuration syntax. There are few smaller concrete things that keep me from switching to Hyprland as a daily driver, but I need to look at them in more detail and see if I haven't missed something. Lastly, I need to address that I don't like the direction the default wallpapers and "fortune" text on the background go in. I think it's a bad default since it might drive off some people that would otherwise really like the project, but that's just my opinion and people have every right to do what they want.
