Nemophila is another excellent all-female Japanese Heavy metal band. Japan is the country with more all-female rock bands in the world. Male and female Japanese musicians are outstanding. Some people say that rock is not dead, it just moved to Japan. By the way, Nemophila played at the Whiskey a gogo a few days ago and is gonna perform at the Aftershock festival in a few days. Band-Maid and The Warning will be there too.

Nemophila is a great band. adabana is probably in my view one of the best songs I have heard in 2022. I do recommend you check out a couple live songs from band maid. domination live and play live are awesome displays of musicianship. they are definitly a rock band, not so much metal. you will find that the Japanese bands are masters at mixing genre's. and they sound great doing it. here's a bunch to check out.....all female....Aldious, Hanabie, Hagane, Bridear, Fate Gear, Broken by the scream, Doll$box, and a more!

Great choice of this song from this band. This song is one of their best songs. When you two hear more songs from this band, you will get a better picture of this band. Songs like Life, Monsters, Sorai, Hypnosis, A Ray Of Light or Oiran. As I wrote before, their new song Adabana is one of the best metal songs of 2022. Guitarist Saki said that the band's musical concept is to play a heavy sound (something like metalcore) spiced with "yurufuwa". Yurufuwa is a Japanese word and means something like fluffy and smooth. The singer mayu is considered the Queen of the Banshee. This is the term for her style fry screams. Many people compare her growling to the roar of a jaguar or mountain lion. This singer has a beautiful voice color with a raw flavor. I love both her singing styles-harsh vocals and pure vocals. I personally consider the singer mayu to be one of the best singers in Japan and a new rock star of the new metal generation. This young band is one of the best metal bands in Japan (not only Japan). New Metal Comet. Thank you so much for this reaction video. Have a good day with my heartfelt greetings :-).

As others have mentioned, Ningen Isu would be a great band to react to. They are often called the Japanese Black Sabbath, but have many influences. 30+ years, 20+ studio albums. Not living on their past hits. Heartless Scat is the song most start with, Namahage and the Colour out of Space are good first reacts as well.

@@truebrodown you need much more than 4 for Japan. The metal scene is much too strong for that. That is like saying 4 metal bands for America. You could do a top 4 all female Japanese metal bands but even that is very hard. I guess it wouldn't be that hard if you exclude Babymetal and Band-Maid for not strictly fitting the category. Lovebites, Aldious, Nemophila and Hanabie. Imo. But if Babymetal and Band-Maid are eligible then they should definitely be there. You could take out Hanabie and Nemophila for being too new. But if I had to do only 4 for Japan I guess... Maximum the Hormone, X-JAPAN, Babymetal and I'm not sure about the 4th I don't know enough about Japanese metal. Show-ya? Ningen Isu? Dunno.

When it comes to the all-female scene in Japan, it is hard to say who is the Big 4. The Big 3 is easy, that's pretty clearly Lovebites, Nemophila and Band-Maid, in terms of having the largest followings outside of Japan. There are a few stand-outs that could be considered that #4, though. First, there is Aldious, whose drummer Marina Bozzio is the step-daughter of the legendary Terry Bozzio of Frank Zappa and Missing Persons fame! They have a pretty good following outside of Japan. Then there are the other offspring of Destrose, a band that didn't have a lot of success on their own, but which spawned several of Japan's biggest female bands. The biggest bands to rise from the ashes of Destrose are Lovebites, Nemophila, Mary's Blood, Fate Gear and Disqualia. Mary's Blood and Disqualia are both defunct now, but they interestingly featured both of Nemophila's guitarists (Hazuki was with Disqualia, but was not the ex-Destrose member in that band; and Saki was with Mary's Blood, and WAS the ex-Destrose member in that band - Hazuki is the first lead in this song, with the black jacket, and Saki has the second lead, with the black tee shirt). There are several bands who aren't all-female who could also fit that #4 spot - male bands Ningen Isu, Crossfaith and Galneryus, and female-fronted bands Unlucky Morpheus, Wagakki Band, and Babymetal, just to name a few. Of course, those are bands who are current. If you delve into the history of Japanese metal, you'll find some truly iconic 80s bands like X-Japan, Loudness, and Show-ya (the band that started the all-female scene), and 90s bands like Maximum the Hormone, most of which are still performing to this day!

Saki was one of five former Destrose members in Mary's Blood. The other four were Eye, Eri, Niboshi (Kayo in her Destrose days), and Mari (though Mari was considered support rather than a full member of Destrose)---they were four of the five original members of MB. Surely in terms of domestic and overseas popularity Gacharic Spin merits mention in any discussion of the most prominent all-female rock/metal bands.

The lack of Maximum The Hormone mentions in this comment section disturbs me. In terms of the big 4 metal bands in Japan, here is an unbiased list to go by how many monthly listeners they have on Spotify. A nice sample poll: 1 - BABYMETAL (1,018,593) 2 - Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas (567,857) 3 - Maximum The Hormone (424,687) 4 - X Japan (252,459) runner up at number 5 would be Band-Maid with 251,319 listeners (if you even count them as metal. they are more hard rock). All your B-tier metal bands are all in the 20,000-50,000 listeners range includes: Lovebites, Nemophila, Brats, Passcode, Broken By the Scream, Ningen Isu, ect. Many in which have major growth potential in the next few years to reach A-tier! biggest Japanese band in the world PERIOD is One OK Rock with 3,077,714 monthly listeners.

Enjoyed the video very much. Your quest for the best 4 metal bands in Japan is pretty daunting. It is like asking for the best 4 metal bands in the Scandinavian countries, especially considering the population of the 5 Scandinavian countries combined is less than a third of the population of Japan. Hell, the metro population of Tokyo is more than the combined population of the 5 Scandinavian countries. Trying to name the top 4 metal bands in Sweden would probably get you in a bar fight. Sabaton fans would probably go to war if that band was included. I would put Therion in my Swedish top 4 but I doubt many others would. What about the diehard Ghost fans? Sweden would erupt in a metal civil war. After all of that, my simple point is that y'all need to listen to at least 10-15 Japanese metal bands. Y'all have have a good start with Lovebites and Nemophila that would be in many top 4 lists (as has been said many times Band-Maid is a great band just not metal). After all those listens, y'all can announce your top 4 and hopefully not start a war. If you want to listen to Japanese metal at its weirdest then give Maximum The Hormone a try. They are the first Japanese band I started listening to almost 20 years ago and I still enjoy them but you have to be in the right mood. With this band, always expect the unexpected and in the words of Samuel L. Jackson in Jurassic Park "Hold On To Your Butts". As a side note, the only female member of the band is Nao, the drummer, who was a big inspiration to Akane, the drummer for Band-Maid. Loudness was one of the few bands in the late 80's that broke into the western market. I would look at Crazy Doctor (Live Europe 1984) to see them in their prime. X-Japan was another huge band. They are know for the "Visual Kei" style (costume dress and hair) that can be traced as an influence to modern Japanese bands today. Yoshiki Drummer/Piano main song writer, famously puts everything into his performance to the point of needing multiple neck surgeries. Rusty Nail live would be a good song to look at. Gazatte is a band that fallowed with the Visual Kei look active from 2002-2019. They can get over Emo at times, but some of the songs hit hard. Other old school Japanese bands include Anthem and Sex Machineguns.

NEMOPHILA is my go to band if I want to listen to some metal. Their riffs drive hard and heavy. They are an All star as far as I'm concerned. One thing I do want to add is that the song you pick for B-M, which understandably you didn't really like, is possibly the worst selection of song to pick. That song was specifically done for an Anime opening. Having said that, try "RINNE" MV or if you can find "Puzzle" live then you will see them rock pretty hard. But as others said, they are more Hard Rock than Metal. Cheers.

I think you're being misled a bit here. First off, I'm enjoying watching you go down this particular rabbit hole. But none of these bands are really all that big in the grand scheme of things. What's happening is that there was a band called Babymetal who went viral on youtube in 2014/2015. Babymetal were an idol unit, but they played metal combined with pop, and it was a bizarre concept that shouldn't have worked, but did. Babymetal gained a big following among Westerners, and youtube's algorhythm took it from there, so suddenly other new "all-female" Japanese hard rock and heavy metal bands got recommended in the sidebar starting with Band-Maid, then Lovebites, then Nemophila, etc. , and then everyone who reacted to Babymetal started reacting to them too. All these bands are fairly new (well, Band-Maid aren't exactly new anymore), and they are all very popular with Western viewers on youtube, but they aren't even close to the "big four of Japanese metal". In fact, there's been what's called a "boom" of all-female hard rock and metal bands in Japan for the last 15 years or so, and the most popular of those bands in Japan were Aldious, Cyntia, and Mary's Blood, while the most influential was Destrose. Because they all existed pre-Babymetal and pre-reaction videos, they barely got any attention at all from the post-Babymetal reaction video crowd. All the bands you're reacting to are what you might call "up and coming". But people in the West have discovered them and are recommending them to you, which is fine because they're great bands. Also, metal in Japan has been a thing for almost as long as metal in the West, staring with Flower Travellin' Band around 1970, but it really kicked off in the late 70s/early 80s with bands like Earthshaker, Ezo, Anthem, Loudness, and a ton of others. later in the 80s bands like X-Japan and Seikima-II came along and became massive, massive bands, influencing generations of metal musicians for decades to come even more than Western metal bands. The metal scene in Japan was huge and has been around for decades, and many of the current (and even older) Japanese bands were primarily influenced by earlier Japanese bands. Of course the earlier Japanese bands were influenced by Western bands, so it makes for some interesting sounds. Third thing - the "all-female" bands aren't the biggest metal bands in Japan, except for one, an 80s band called Show-Ya, who were also massively popular and influential. They're often cited as the "first all-female Japanese heavy metal band", but that's only because they were so popular. They were actually more of a hard rock band who drifted more and more toward metal throughout their career, but meanwhile there were a couple of dozen legitimate all-female metal bands in the 80s who are less well known but significantly more "metal". There have always been a ton of all-female metal bands in Japan, it's not a boy's club like it is over here, but having said that, the male bands have still been the most popular bands traditionally, and by quite a big margin (Show-Ya excepted). Last thing, I mentioned that a lot of the Japanese bands were primarily influenced by older Japanese bands. A perfect example of that is Saki, the guitarist in this video on your right. She was inspired to become a musician after seeing Seikima-II on TV when she was a kid, she was in a Seikima-II tribute band early in her carerer, she plays Killer guitars, which is what Luke Takamura from Seikima-II plays, she even played his signature Killer guitar, and Saki now even has her OWN signature Killer guitar. She's a veteran and an original and a highly regarded player and shredder extraordinaire in her own right, but as far as comparisons go, her lead style is more similar to Luke Takamura's style than it is to any Western guitar player. But a glaring exception to this is Lovebites, and that's because Miho (bass player/leader until she left the band) grew up on 80s Western bands like Iron Maiden, Helloween, Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Slayer, Motorhead, etc, and so her entire concept for Lovebites is that she wanted to form a band that played the kind of music she grew up on and loves, and so Lovebites have a very intentional Western 80s-inspired metal sound. I was going to say more, but that's already a book and I have to get up for work in 5 hours. I hope that's somewhat useful information at least. Cheers!

While Destrose was important, because so many great players passed through it, it was not particularly "influential". Arguably Scandal was more influential, because so many of today's younger Japanese female professional rock and metal musicians listened to and watched them growing up. Scandal's influence on the Japanese music scene is often underestimated by Westerners---in their heyday they were everywhere in Japan, on TV specials, TV commercials, anime tie-ups, drama theme songs, Budokan concerts, overseas appearances too---and a very slick PR effort, including a renowned fan-club and associated events. Japanese female musicians didn't necessarily imitate Scandal's musical style, but I think many saw the band as a kind of role-model because of its great success. Its influence was on both the music and business sides of the music industry. Also, Gacharic Spin should be mentioned in the same breath as Aldious and Mary's Blood. In fact, those three bands and Destrose often shared the bill---I saw various combinations of those four bands numerous times at club and theater gigs over a number of years. They were a kind of sorority, building relationships that continue today.

The dude's bands are far more popular, but the girl's bands have the momentum on their side these days. In general, metal music is huge in Japan, Crystal Lake, for example is one of the top metalcore bands from Japan, and it's quite sucessful internationally (check for example "Apollo" or "Curse"). Their drummer Gaku Taura produces Hanabie (Ha-na-bee-eh, which can be translated as "cold flower" or "flower chill"), another girl's band which mixes heavy metalcore sounds with a variety of genres, while being very kawaii ("cute") at the same time. Great stuff! (Listen to "We love sweets", to begin with) They began as a Maximum the Hormone cover band, which is a veteran alternative/progressive metalcore band, legendary and very influential for the younger generations of japanese musicians. Don't miss Dir En Grey, which started in the late 1990s, with many recordings up to now, and a great variety of metal and hardcore tunes. Very unique, and Kyo, their vocalist, is an outstanding vocalist (listen to "Vinushka in the Androgynous Tour live version, it's a real treat). And what about the stunning Unlucky Morpheus an d their Deathcore buddies of the Undead Corporation? Or the power metal band Galneryus, another legend in Japan? Did I mention Crossfaith yet, or Coldrain, post-hardcore/alternative metal both of them, which reached lots of popularity in the past decade. And this isn't even the tip of the iceberg and a very unfair selection in the end, there are a lot more interesting and inpiring bands. It's a fact that the japanese are obsessed with rock - the louder and harder the better, for many of them.

Lovebites make speed metal btw. but thats besides the point. if you want to have one of the biggest japanese metal bands ever then listen to X-Japan. they got such a cult fanbase you wont find that anywhere else in the world. i dont even think fans from Metalica iron maiden slayer and those kinds of bands come close to the fans of X-japan. read a little bit about the band. the drummer who couldnt drum anymore because of neck injury but he kept trying and trying and eventually played drum again. the whole story behind that band is massive. never seen anything like that of any band in the world. they are definitely worth checking out.

I agree. Also, the song that was chosen for B-M was not even a good representation of the band's typical sound (Sense) as it was tailored maid for an Anime. Anyway, not fair to put B-M in the metal category as they are as you said Hard Rock, even though they do have a few heavy metal-ish songs in their catalog. But, going back to NEMOPHILA, they are my favorite metal band coming out of Japan hands down.

7:00 There is a lot of women bands popping right now yeah, another great one that's starting to trend right now is Hanabie. You can also check Aldious, Mary's Blood or Bridear, that are heavy metal bands smaller but also with five women. And we are not even looking at the idol bands side of the scene xD There was in the 80s a generation of metal bands in Japan like Loudness, Earthshaker or Anthem and one of them was show-ya, a band of girls that are now getting close to their 60s but still kicking ass. Show-ya not only played music but they also helped to grow the women scene in Japan, and 30 years later the result is that we have a lot of girls playing metal. Then the success of Babymetal put a lot of eyes in Japan and a lot of people has discovered what is happening there. But yeah there are very good dudes bands too. Crystal Lake (very good metalcore band, though that's far away from my favorite genre), Galneryus as epic power metal, Ningen Isu that are a classic band from 80s that has found more success nowadays... And all the Visual Kei bands, that's another whole world to get into xD

BandMaid commercial rock? Not even close. Rock group "One Ok Rock" is commercial rock. Top3 1) BandMaid 2) Maximum The Hormone 3) BabyMetal. There's X Japan but they seem to me like copycats of Big hair Metal. Same with Lovebites

Lovebites is not "big hair metal". Not even close. They are primarily influenced by the NWOBHM. And that's absolutely not "big hair metal". Good grief.....many of their songs are pretty much thrash metal. Also, he said he wants to find the big four of Japanese metal. Band Maid are not Metal.

Dude, Band-Maid have a pretty commercial sound. Their older material more so than the newer stuff. That's a fact. Also it's hilarious that you'd name Babymetal of all bands. It doesn't get much more commercial. Not denying the talent, but still.

Welcome to the rabbit hole of incredibly talented musicians from Japan. Sorry for the novel length comment, but I feel like I have to clarify something before you get the wrong impression (even though my comment will probably be swallowed up because the video's a week old now). All of the Japanese metal bands you explored (and will explore) probably have more fans outside of Japan than in their home country. After reading a few comments, I really don't know where the impression that "metal is huge in Japan" comes from. They probably have the best bands in the world at the moment, but their metal community is really small. If you'd ask 100 people under 30 years old in Shibuya, I'd say that the majority couldn't even name you one metal band (if they even knew what metal is) and the majority of the rest would say X Japan because that's one of the few they know because either their parents listen(ed) to them or because of their band leader Yoshiki, who even played piano on the emperors birthday celebrations a few years back. Talking about metal bands founded after 2010, BABYMETAL is by far the most successful and that's probably because they're Idols. They're (were) the only ones filling arenas. Lovebites go and Nemophila could probably go up to ZEPP Tokyo level, which would be ~3500 people, for their tour finals, Unlucky Morpheus and Mary's Blood can consistently fill venues of 2000 people for their tour finals, but the big majority of the rest play mainly live houses (the Japanese form of music clubs) in front of 500 people or less. Majority also can't live from playing in a/one band either, that's why you see so many musicians with more than one band or giving music lessons on the side for example. If you want to be successful with music in Japan you need to become an Idol (female or male), play Pop(rock) or be lucky and get chosen for an anime theme. You probably have a bigger chance that a Japanese under 30 who listens to mainstream music can name you all of the 100+ AKB48 members than a metal band founded after 2010. And yes, I deliberately left out Band-Maid (who'd be a clear #2 after BABYMETAL) because they're not a metal band.

Within the metal community of people I know I'd say the 5 most well known hard rock/metal bands from Japan are X-Japan, Babymetal, Band-Maid, Dir En Grey and Maximum the Hormone. Though there are others that are fairly well known such as Lovebites, Nemophila, Crystal Lake, Mary's Blood, Loudness, Ningen Isu, Passcode, Broken By The Scream, Girugamesh, Deviloof and a few others. Japan has one of the best if not the best Metal scenes going right now.

Welcome to the party. Japanese bands have been playing Rock and Roll for 70 years. You just haven’t been listening. Japan’s Heavy Metal “Big Four” would certainly include X-Japan, a group that took off in the 80’s. NEMOPHILA made covers of two X-Japan songs. See on KZfaq. You still don’t have NEMOPHILA “figured out.” They’re very versatile and every song has a different sound. ADABANA, their latest single, might be their best yet. And they’ve released dozens of cover songs in tribute to other influential Japanese bands you’ve never heard of. They are all worth checking out. The “girls” doing the gang vocals are the band members. (Drummer MURATA TAMA is a mother of two.)

Nemophila doesn’t have the deep catalog that Band-Maid has due to being a young band. You can’t really pin these bands to a genre, especially Band-Maid. They incorporate pop, punk, rock, metal and more into their songs. About the only thing that all of their songs have in common is that they are “catchy”. If you dig deeper into their catalog you will experience the variety. I do suggest Band-Maid’s official live videos instead of the OMVs which I think distract you from what amazing musicians these women are. The quickest way to see the diversity of their music is the Official Live Video for “Manners/ Black Hole”. Enjoy the journey!

Japan is unusual in having a lot of very good all-women bands but there are plenty of of all-men and mixed gender bands in all genres. Ningen Isu is an all male trio. Maximum the Hormone is all men except for the drummer, Nao, who the drummer Akane of Band-Maid is a fan of. Unlucky Morpheus is men except for the lead singer Fuki and the violinist Jill. Yes, they are all metal bands. There was a man, Takeharu Kunimoto, who played bluegrass on the Japanese shamisen. He even studied bluegrass at Tennessee State University. He sadly died at age 55. So the Japanese will tackle any music genre. Oh, and Nemophila is the scientific name for a group flowers from N. America. It is a mix of Latin and Greek root words.

On your bandmaid reaction, i'd put nemophila Raitei, but you started stronger w Dissension. for variety, try their "Life", or "Hypnosis". for live, try anything from Naon No Yaon show 2021 (no audience, soso sound, but rockin 3 song set). Personally think the latest is the best, "Adabana" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d96JnLKo2Nuap4k.html This Dissension vid was about half english, there is a full english version. I'd also put lots of female metal, that is a large part of the current scene, and i dare say the attraction for westerners (and everyone). As far as finding a BIG 4?, i'm not sure there's enough thrash, nor groove metal bands. There are some *-Core bands like Crossfaith...? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLFjp819lbfDdn0.html Maximum the Hormone is awesome, contemporaries of System of a Down (with female drummer and her lil bro guitarist), "Yoshu Fukushu" (i dunno, translate says "preparation assistant") kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mMt-aMihmrPWlI0.html Dir En Grey is like art-metal, a bit of everything but it's about the show, the drama, incredible voice: "Tousei" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g6ddrbuZr6jYfo0.html . But Japan's mostly got powermetal, they thrive on mashups and superb technique. Their alternative is "idol culture" which focuses on personality and is (way too!) forgiving of lackluster talent, huge gaps from them to top-tier that you'd like. Some "in the middle"? might be Hanabie (all female, new) "We love sweets" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZdorNyntanNhIE.html , there's also BiSh ("brand new idol shit"), Broken by the Scream... and of course 20 more... But one more thing they do have, classic metal. Merge loudness and judas priest, with no gimmicks at all, you get Anthem. been around forever, all english now on nuclear blast records, try 2019's Black Empire kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9qklqappp3Limw.html or an apparently brand new? live version, my first listen, sounds killer kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbuKf7xl27iXY3U.html Other bands like this, Sabre Tiger, SexMachineguns?, dozen more... I'll be watching, maybe you'll react to something that triggers my horrible memory ;)
