Very good video. Here's a little trick to help get that upper agitator piece back on. Push the lower half of the agitator on first, making sure the splines on the shaft are aligned with the grooves in the agitator. Set the thrust washer in place. Put together the dog assembly and insert it into the upper agitator piece while holding the upper agitator piece upside down. Turn the agitator over. Here's the trick: Take a 6 inch ratchet extension with a 5/8" socket attached to it. Use the socket to hold the dog assembly in place while aligning the slots with the four tabs that stick up from the lower agitator piece. The 5/8' socket will be pushing on the dog assembly right where the 7/16" bolt will go. When they are aligned, use the socket and extension to push the dog assembly onto the plastic tabs. Voila! Swap the 5/8" socket for your 7/16" socket and you are ready to put in the 7/16" bolt and rubber washer.

Agitator dogs have nothing to do the spin cycle. Thry only keep they top part of the dual action agitator fromfree spinning or turning both ways. It ratchets one way like he said, turning the load in a downward direction. Little confused with your statement. But, glad you got it going!

Thanks for sharing this. I've been struggling to get an agitator out that had a severely corroded bolt head so when I finally got it out with a stripped bolt extractor I was frustrated I couldn't pull the agitator assembly apart to change the dogs as most other videos make it seem so easy like it just falls apart. Yours gave a tip to stand on it so you can give it a strong pull and that did the trick.

Thanks for the comment. Your right about being able to DIY fixing things with the help of peoples videos. Even if it's something you might not to want to do yourself (I don't like working on cars) you can maybe figure out what the problems are so you can deal better when you take it in for repairs, and maybe not get sold something you don't really need.

EXCELLENT WORK, clear, concise and we're up and running in under an hour. I encountered a minor issue caused by my machine. It apparently wore down 2 of the 4 tabs as though me;ted by friction-heat after the machine's dog teeth were worn thru. Simple fix with a Dremel drill and small grinder to remove the meleted portion that was holding back removal. Reassembled and it runs factory smooth. Thanks Mark, again, great work.

Thank you uploader very much!! Excellent instructions and easy to follow. You did mention the four white tabs on the lower agitator contrary to another poster. I actually found it easier to place the bottom of the agitator in the machine first. Then I lowered the top piece by "eyeballing" the four slots in the dog assembly to the four tabs on the agitator and it slipped right on. The whole job cost me 10 bucks. I'm willing to bet a repairman would have charged in the 200 dollar range to perform this.Thanks again!!

Love the kitty that did the walk-on-by @ 7:46 into this clip. LOL Great tutorial. I had to do this fix as well. Mine was on a Kenmore 80 series. The trick with getting the bolt into the hole to tighten down the auger is this. Take your ratchet with extender and socket on the end and find a small piece of paper towel. Cut it so that it's 4" square. Then fold that square in half then in half again. That should be enough to put over the socket. Next push down the screw so that it forces the paper towel into the socket thus holding the screw inside the socket snugly enough to screw it back into the auger. That's it! Done.

Do you think this would cause the clothes to get all tangled up? It does not seem as bad, since we replaced the dogs and assembly. Thanks again!
@MarkMillerIsGardening
@MarkMillerIsGardening 8 жыл бұрын
+KD Hovis Not sure. Some fabrics seem to tangle up easier than others. My wife's clothes, being lighter and more straps on them, tangle more than my stuff. But it was worse before I put in the new dogs. I think because the clothes kind of got trapped in one area when only the bottom part was working. Once the top part was fixed the clothes moved around better.

I have a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II with this issue. The washer is about 15 years old. I had trouble separating the lower agitator from the top part at first. There are 4 tabs that go through the grooves in the dogs assembly with their tops welded to the assembly cover. You can tell them apart from the cover because it's white plastic vs. transparent plastic of the cover. I used a 1/4 inch wood drill (the one with sharp pin in the middle of the tip so that you can center the drill on the welds and it doesn't slide off) an drilled the welds out. Don't go too far, just enough to break the welds-about 1/2 mm or 0.020 inch. The parts came right apart. Make sure you remove all debris and cut off burrs from the top of the tabs so they don't catch on anything when you put assembly back in. One more advice: clean the o-ring on the top cover and apply some silicon grease to it. It will be easier to put in. Without it the rubber of the o-ring might catch on the inside of the housing and come off. I hope it helps. All together a $5 (plus tools if you don't have them) and 30 minute fix. Awesome! Thanks, Mark

To prevent clothing from knotting and twisting: Avoid mixing heavy items with light items. Avoid putting too many or too few items in the washer. Make sure you set the proper water level for the size load you are doing. ... Never wrap the clothes around the agitator. ... Be sure your wash water is not too hot for the fabric.
@PatrickWagz

Thanks for the reply. However, there seems to be something wrong with our washer. It worked fine for about 5 years, and now it seems to only move the agitator in one direction (not back and forth). So, consequently, the clothes get wrapped around the center agitator in a couple minutes, even if I follow all your tips. Do you know what would cause it to only agitate in one direction?? I checked the "agitator dogs", and they are good. Thanks, for any further advice you may have.

Okay I just figured out why it wasn't going on. I had the yellow retainer cap on upside down once I put that on the opposite way it's slid on perfectly. Thank God, that thing can go on both ways once you try the alternative it slides on like butter

simply turn it upside down and install the dog assembly from the bottom. Also no need for locktite, it is self tightening, just snug it up, and you are good to go.

you can tell its broken when he turns the top part of the agitator counterclockwise and the bottom of the agitator doesn't move with it

also 2:17 so that is what the square holes on the agitators are for (on the models that don't have a fabric softener dispenser on top of the agitator)

Thank you for this video!! Well done! I only have one question! My agitator is going back and forth but much stronger than it was originally! Did I do something wrong since it is not going in one direction?

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The agitator does go back and forth when its running. But the auger, the top part that drives the clothes down, pretty much goes in only one direction. As the agitator goes clockwise the dogs pick up on the auger and push it in the same direction. When the agitator goes counter clockwise the dogs release from the auger and it just sits there. These are very short movements. My agitator also seems to be much stronger after I did all this, especially before putting in a load of clothes (I usually run in the water and soap so it mixes good before putting in the load.). So far it is still running OK but the washer is starting to show its age and a new one might be in the near future.

Should I be able to hold the bottom agitator by hand? My roper seems like it’s not agitating fast. Spinning and everything else is fine anyone have advice? I’ve replaced a whole upper agitator cam kit.

The only thing that comes to mind is the gear that the dogs catch on may be worn, at the 5:42 mark in the video. Other then that would be if things are lined up ok.
