It's always fun to turn a new, to me, species of wood and this Sumac is no exception. Inside is some beautiful color and grain but outside is a feature I consider really special. The bark is also very nice. Finished in shellac.
There are also some new sanders shown in this video and they are now available for you if you feel they can help you. I'm am not sponsored and receive nothing for this, I just want you to know about them in case they may help you with your woodturning. www.TuffyMarginez.com

I freaking love this bowl. Especially that big ol' hole. And every other single aspect which makes it unique. I could picture this on my coffee table in a place of honor.

To all the readers of these comments, I wish to propose a toast to Phil Anderson, the man whose bark is always better than his bite. If you wish to join me in this toast it should be done with prune juice, served in a bowl with a knot hole, worm holes or missing bark inclusion in the lower half of the bowl. So ladies and gentlemen drink fast. Phil, you're the man. Keep up the great work.

Oh, my gosh, there’s an elephant inside with a long trunk, an eye, and an open mouth. How fun!

I sure enjoy how you allow the piece to evolve. Also your sense of timing using acceleration enhances the video.

Doesn't get any more interesting than a piece like that. I scored 2 sumac trees last week from the burn pile on my sister's property. Rootballs and all except for branches. Wood has a gold tone. Still green but sealed and stored. When I bought my first lathe 38 years ago I used to scrounge branches from state parks and sumac was one of the first pieces I turned. Didn't really make anything just happy to be turning. Everything became a candle holder. Always recalled the gold toned wood.

Phil, You have a great eye for turning something what I used to consider wood for the fire pit. I really like how you guide us through your turning process. You do such a great job explaining how you see and do the turnings. Thank you and God bless you.🙂

Yes, it is an interesting piece! The void doesn't detract at all from the shape of it. Nice one!

That's really cool. I'm glad you left that branch, it does make the piece.

I bought those sanders, they are life savers. They are real good with the deeper bowls and vases that nothing else fits in. Thanks to you and Tuffy for them. E.T. with a gas mask! I do love the strange wood that you get to turn, the sumac I'm familiar with here in Portland are kind of short and skinny.

I went back in time and saw this piece before you turned it. I know it would be nice. Very unique but beautiful bowl!! Those crotches with branches are my favorite to turn. They are a rough ride to the end, but the results is amazing. Awesome piece Phil...Thank you
