I am trying to Hitchhike Around The Globe. I literally want to circumnavigate the planet without using any means of public transportation.
From my hometown Tübingen in Germany I will hitchhike through Europe looking for an opportunity to help out on a private sailing boat to cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean and Central America.
From there I have to catch another boat over the vast Pacific ocean in order to reach the Asian continent to complete my journey by hitchhiking back to my hometown in Germany.

Same thing happened to me after a storm in the middle of the Atlantic. We were rescued by a Chinese tanker. We did have a bolt cutter in one of the cockpit storage lockers. This was a life saver, because we could cut the stays fast and ditch the mast to prevent a puncture of the hull. A boltcutter is now standard inventtory for me on a sailing vessel. I would recommend every sailor to have one on board.

Holy Cow, how high was your adrenaline rush during this scary/dangerous situation. So glad it didnt happen in the middle of the night. Glad everyone was safe. I know a cat has 9 lives, i think you just used up one of yours !

That was astounding. What an experience. First a poopingless journey to the horror of being mastless. Then the return.journey in the pitching and rolling boat really messed you up. But above all , the sprite of your Captain couple was outstanding . Hope to see something more hopefully in the.next video .

These sailboats are normally made to withstand even strong storms.. these were very light winds.

Yes it was inspected but of course they can not look at the inside of the bolts where there was probably corosion. 😑 What does not kill you makes you stronger I guess.

So great to see you again. You sure have your share of experiences with seas and oceans when they tell humans, who is in power. Hi Jojo, Everything was going smoothly and this had to happen!!! Most importantly, no one was injured and managed to reach land safe & sound. Had to pause for awhile as don't know what to say or write.....let us hope that the the damage can be fix in order for the boat to sail again though it may take awhile. Wow. You are definitely not the luckiest, mate! It reminds me of my own Trans-Atlantic crossing in 2015. We also had a problem with the mast (in mid-crossing), but being a schooner, we had a spare mast....

Jojo Aigner Actually I just checked the journal: it wasn't nearly as dramatic as yours! The halyard holding up the headsail parted, and the sail fell into the sea. We managed to get it out, and we had a spare halyard with us.

It seems strange for the boat to be dismasted in light winds. Were the stays overtightened? I'm not a sailor yet, but plan to have heavy bolt/wire cutters for this kind of situation. In my imagination I would save the boom and make a jury rig, so it's concerning that you weren't able to do it with several people in calm conditions, but the key thing is that you all got home.

Yes very strange and rare incident that is why we were so surprised. Sure that would be a good idea to safe the boom to build a jury rig. But it is always more difficult than you think to actually get it removed and everything in a stressful situation. And every action you try holds new risks (running around on deck with sharp knifes and saws). In this situation we knew that we can still reach land with our diesel and we would have made different desicions in the middle of the Atlantic. But with a plastic boat and a mast banging against it's hull you just want to loose that mast. 😊

We cut all the plastic bottles into small pieces to store them and recycled them on land. :)

@@ironfistarrival This boat has crossed the Atlantic many times and has been to Greenland with previous owners. It is a bluewater sailboat. And there are many people crossing oceans in alot smaller sailboats. ☺
