This damaged racing axe was in a bad way. That's why I bought it, as I like a challenge and love the idea of bringing something back to life! The main damage was a serious crack all the way through the poll. It came out fantastic and I'm blown away by how good the axe is!
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

Well done, beautiful axe again. To protect the heat treatment, put a wet towel around the parts, you're not working at and make it wet again when it starts to steam. Of course it's not splitting well - it's a felling axe, ment to cut across the grain. A splitting mall is much beefier and doesn't need to be really sharp, as it wedges the fibers apart and not cut them.

Hey man! Nice axe! Some great Aussie history that's for sure. Just a tip for future reference! Don't use magnets to hold something you're trying to weld as it effects the arc and can cause all kinds of weird stuff to occur during welding! Keep using grinders/power tools for working on axes. What do you think they use during manufacturing? Haha!

Watched a lot of ax restoration videos, you seem to be one of the few that really does the hanging of the head the right way. A tight fit, no gaps, flush to the edges and filling the entirety of the eye. Then your wood wedges go all the way from the tip of the eye to the back, again with no gaps, and you go the extra mile with the metal step wedges to ensure it doesn't come loose. Well done, the only suggestion I have is maybe do a restoration and use the hatchet regularly and show us how it looks 6-12 months later. Even if it comes loose (which I doubt) your already high credibility would be burnished even further and you could show us what you did right and wrong to lessen mistakes for next time and help someone out who may be restoring an ax themselves.

Interesting. I never knew there were special racing or competition axes, but I don't really live where that's a common thing. It turned out great. I think a brass pin going through the head where the hole is might add a little to the look. Even if it didn't need it. I always love when people finish a build using the item they make or restore. Great job Pask.
