Naked Roger you have nailed this to a tee, I was at appledurcombe campsite last May whilst my other half was cycling round the island doing the Randonnee. I really liked your stairs and banister shots, the composition was stunning. I am looking at getting a Bronica myself so this was really informative and nice to see its capabilities, someone else had suggested the pistol grip for going handheld. I can’t imagine how many takes you had to do as a I can imagine the missus not keeping a straight face.

I've had mine for a month now, and have done the multiple exposure thing. I was testing the shutter and aperture on a new lens, with the back off and forgot to switch it back. Think I had 4 different shots one one frame. I've kind of fallen in love with it. Might as well, really. I love my SQ and my S2A. Why not her. I think I've blown through 5 rolls since I got it. Great video. I got into bronica cameras back in 2013 when a lady in Canada gave me some darkroom gear. She asked if I knew anyone that wanted a bronica ETRS. I said I would love it but have no money. She says it was $3000 13 years ago and I had a look at it. I had no idea if it worked as it needed a new battery. I said the most I could offer was $100 as I was strapped for cash. Later she phones me and says I know you will use it and that's all that matters. Why don't you come and take it for free. Tyre marks left in my friends house drive where I was staying I headed back. The camera came with large flash gun, brackets as in your video 3 lenses, 2 backs one for 220 film and all boxed! I have used it and it worked with no problems. It takes stunning photos and is light as medium format cameras go. After that I needed the square format and picked up a dead man's camera a beautiful bronica S2a all in its case and complete with backs and lenses. Even if you have to pay for it you could buy at least 3 bronica versions to one hasselblad with one lens and I bet you can't tell the difference in quality.

Heres my little take on it all. The ETRSi is a great little intro to the world of MF. The SQAi is an easier thing to live with as like the Rollie and Hass 500 series it is square so cropping portrait or landscape is therefore a choice you can make afterwards. The most complete MF useable outside the studio is of course the Mamiya RZ ProII - I had mine after the aforementioned cameras shooting weddings and portraits and commercial for about ten years. A better camera but far more difficult on location would be the GX680II as it shoots both portrait and landscape like the RZ with a revolving back and despite being made of mostly composite material - the body is surprisingly light - it is just too big to use handheld. If anyone finds themselves at The House Of Photography in Covent Garden have a gander at my GX680III in theri Heritage Dept complete with every lens which I very kindly donated to them since they were so good to me in the past - and I was a Fuji Ambassador for a while - I had about four of them and this was the spare as were all the lenses. However by far the sweetest and most manageable film camera i ever owned was in fact the little baby Rollei SLX - square format compact left and right handed at the same time and just sat nicely if on a tripod and or in the palm - it's the only thing I have found which is similar to my little 907X having never had the Hass equivalent fixed lens SW. I find I use the 907x more than my H6D100c even on commercial shoots on location simply because its so compact. and since I usually only shoot automotive it lends itself to the 'you can only use it in landscape mode idiocy'. Which brings me full circle to the benefits of the 645 - its MF but its quite compact compared to the equivalents in SQ - another contender would of course be the Mamiya 645 - but I tried it and didn't like the lenses - they are in a much poorer league than the RZ lenses. - the Bron lenses are the bomb for the money though. Get them now before this video hits 12m and everyone has shot out and bought one!!!

Make timed exposures in steps as with normal strip, but overlay on the already exposed 00 strip. Evaluate, and print with split grade printing. Might only work for split grade though
@igaluitchannel6644
@igaluitchannel6644 3 жыл бұрын
@@dannyb5874 Thanks. It seems like the procedure for getting a split-grade print. I've used it sometimes, but only on difficult prints. But, I see your point. Finding the right highlights and shadows. Lately, I'm making a print at 1 1/2 grade to find right highlights, then increase contrast to get the shadows right. Also, there's another tech- nique shown by Andrea Calabresi in Darkroom Tutorial #01, here on KZfaq. It's very good, but still depends on developing your judgement on highlights and shadows. Multigrade papers by making the possibilities endless make it more confusing for us somewhat.

Heres a challenge for you, I have the ETRS and was looking at upgrading to SQA / SQAi to get a square crop format, one of my Bronica ETRS focus screens has lines etched into it showing a square crop? I wondered what quality you could get out of a print by cropping the 645 neg to 42mm x 42mm square? total area is then 1.76 cm² would be interesting to see whether I actually need the quality of a full 56mm x 56mm neg? Interestingly, I searched around and have not found one single video of cropping 645 to square so it would be a first! Keep up the good work and oh yeh,.... I subbed!

Seeing as your on the Isle of Wight, join English Heritage and get regular access to Osborne House, the place where Queen Victoria was very happy and where she eventually died. It's a great location for photography as well. Have you ever thought of doing a feature/homage on the work of Isle of Wight photographer Julia Margaret Cameron? She was a real pioneer in portraiture photography, one of the first to step away from the formalised style and produce a more artistic vision. ( her pictures look like prog rock album covers ) Dimbola Lodge at Freshwater was her home for many years, and there's a great museum there. It's also a great place for photography. When I last went ( pre pandemic ) they had an exhibition of photographs from the famous Isle of Wight Festival, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Miles Davis, The Who, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan ..... and they say the IOW can be a bit quiet! When the restrictions lift, you could do features on Cowes Week as well as the scooter rallies. The photo of the girl on her horse is superb, worthy of a print.

I've shot at Osborne for commissioned work early hours before tourists. That was creepy at 6am!! And dimbola I won an award there years ago for photography which was fun. That place is one on my list for a future video. I did enquire to learn wet plate there but since covid everything went west. But id like to interview the organisers at some point and talk about Margerate Cameron and the work she used to do. I heard she used to sit at her window photographing walkers going past. The time switch on the lens is the same. Just use a cap for the lens before and after your exposure and its fine. (as you have to flick the switch on the lens) eliminate shake.

It's interesting you find Pancro punchy. I'm guessing it's the Rodinal because the Pancro I shoot is all rather flat. Think HP5 bit not quite as flat.

Probably the 3rd time I've shot that film and found it has good contrast. Never seen it flat. Doesn't beat Ferrania p30 though for a kick!

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I don't yet develop my own film. So it probably is a developer trait. I don't know what my lab uses. My bet is HC110 or Ilford ID-11 would render a flatter negative. It Definitely not HP5 flat though. It does have a good bit of contrast, but i find it flatter than most other B&W films i've shot.

Nice prints ! Do you think that the RZ67 with the 6×4.5 back is better than the ETRS or it's about the same quality (lens/print sharpness) ?

great video, but Now I understand why you made the double exposure mistake, you are not used to this method of doing it, as on the Mamiya you disconnect the back film advance gearing, via a switch, defeating the interlock; Also this lever, on bronica's is the ONLY way to 'test' the camera without film in the back, as interlocks stop shutter cocking until the film is wound up to the next shot,same as the mamiya, so it being 'active' is a normal turn of events for this system- not a special use case ( to double_expose as an effect, or to do a 'joinder picture' in-camera)- as for 35 mm slr's . The standard proceedure for an 'interchangable film cassette' camera is to replace the darkslide, take the magasine off, re-cock the body, then replace the mag, remove the slide and shoot!, for 'SLR's' it is the former, with a 'lever' of some description being the way to do it (other than the obvious advance release [the one used before using the rewind crank]) the MF proceedure is also used in the case of 'accidental' mirror lock-up use, as mostly the return of this switch enevitably fires the shutter to re-cock it.
