Brooding Chicks - Beginners Guide To Meat Chickens
Today we got a new batch of cornish cross chicks in the mail! These are our first broiler chickens or meat chickens for this year. These will be chickens we sell later in the year at our farmer's markets.
We are going to show how to set up your brooder, get your chickens started correctly so they will thrive and do well, talk about feed, water, heat lamps and other brooder operations. If you want to get started in pastured poultry, this is a video you should see!

Love your videos, one suggestion with your big brooder. The hinged roof looks heavy because of the shingled roof. A metal roof might be lighter .
@robinwhitlatch4497
@robinwhitlatch4497 2 жыл бұрын
The new mic’s improved your audio 1000%! 👍 The roof on the giant brooder looks pretty heavy and appeared that it wants to twist when you opened it. Would attaching a 2x2 strip vertically every 3 or 4 feet help stiffen up the plywood and stabilize it when opening? The new chicks look great zooming all over the brooder. Turkeys are growing fast! They always crack me up running in a single line, flapping their wings but no flight. Glad to see Sondra getting back to her sassy self and making a appearance. 🤠

That Cornish cross is boss. It was my first meat chicken. 2 over ate young and died. Ones legs stopped working before it was a year old but I grew to incredible size. The other two lived longer didn't have leg problems and again produced massive amounts. These chickens free ranged with my leghorn and though they preferred grains, they were excellent grazers. Overall very healthy and sweet temperament.

Great video guys. Love to see the grass starting to green up and hearing the peeps of the new chicks. We’re starting our second year of having just chicken and eggs at the market and doing all our own processing packaging. We’re going to try to do a run or two of turkeys this year and I wondered, when you mention having ground turkey and turkey sausage, are those products you process and package yourself? If so I’d love a video on that process. As well as some insight on how you part up a whole turkey. We have processed a couple for neighbors but never broken them down. Thanks for what you do and any info you can lend!

@esperago
@esperago 2 жыл бұрын
Where the heck do you live that you are allowed to process and package yourself without thousands of dollars of equipment, machinery and sanitation devices? Where I live in Canada, the provincial government basically requires all of the above plus a dedicated indoor area and a license. In other words, the only poultry producers that can afford to process the birds themselves are factory farms. It's brutal.
@wesashcraft7799
@wesashcraft7799 2 жыл бұрын
@@esperago Most of the US has a small poultry producer exemption. That allows farms like mine and Chuck and Saundra’s to process and package poultry so long as it’s under a certain number of birds (usually 20k). It still is thousands of dollars of equipment if you want to do it at any scale, just a little lighter on the regulation size. Also in almost all cases can’t be sold over state lines.
@esperago
@esperago 2 жыл бұрын
@@wesashcraft7799 God Bless the USA. I'm Canadian but should have been born an American. So many regulations up here. I need a poultry license just to raise anything over 200 meat birds a year. Im jealous of your freedom.
