Our black copper maran hen has been broody for a week now. She does not like it when other hens bother her!

The box stealer sure is gorgeous! We had a whole yard full of fowl when I was a kid. Chickens of several breeds...one ornery little bantam...ducks, geese, and a huge Tom turkey. Named Tom of course. Lol. I don't recall them doing this but I'm sure they did. I remember egg gathering tho. The rooster was NOT amused! Love it when your big daddy steps into the ring to restore harmony. Yeah right! I miss being serenaded every morning. Dad's geese were little buggers too. They pulled the letters off my Dad's new Taurus. Tom chased me in the house once. Mom almost had a stroke! They are all real characters! Thanks for sharing.🐾🐓🐔🐣🥚😊

Got to love a broody hen! Always entertaining to see others with hens that act/sound like ours. 1 box or 10, they will always choose opposite of what you think and plan for lol

I have a broody that’s adopted 20 chicks that are 6-8 weeks old. She attacks when I feed but she chases everything away from her chicks. I don’t worry about her free ranging at all.
@Skele_bopa3 жыл бұрын
One of my chickens is exactly like the chicken trying to squeeze in the nest with the others, but she's twice as worse. She attacks them until they get out of the nest, then takes it, but when the chicken she just pecked moves to another nest, she attacks again to steal the same nest the other chicken just moved to!

Hen's really aren't that smart. Mine are the same. I have made sure there are loads of nest boxes but they still try and sit on top of each other. My record find was 5 silly hens in a nest box all growling at each other 😁 🐓

How did they all manage to squeeze in. Must have been crazy to see and hear, what with all the outrageous complaining from one another.

Technically speaking, chickens are actually very intelligent for their bird species. Along with Ravens, crows, and parrots.
@bananabuttons66379 ай бұрын
@Senator-KO you clearly haven't spent much time with chickens or tried a food maze with them lol. I had the small, bantam breed, so maybe they are not as good as the full-size farm version, who knows. I kept them for about 20 years and they were not achieving great things but were happy and great eggs. Very fun pets if you can have them. Happy animals definitely made very tasty eggs. I agree that crows, ravens, etc are incredible and also parrots abs other small birds

That is an awesome hen to be working with. Completely agree with ya, bet she'll be a terrific, fierce mama. Prime example of why I have nest containers that can be moved with hen inside. I've found it's less of a shock to them after the move. I hope yours adjusted well! I have a Wyandotte hen broody on fakes right now. I'm looking forward to replacing her eggs tomorrow with some from a friend. Are you planning on letting them co parent all chicks? I've always wanted to try it.
@thegraceandgreens85337 жыл бұрын
Yes. I will certainly be updating our set up by next spring to allow for easier broody hen care. I didn't expect 2 hens to go broody at only 7 months. The second broody is 1 week behind on her eggs, but if they want to co-parent I am fine. After watching and reading even more, I have decided to let them stay put in the coop and hatch where they are. I might move the hen and chicks for a week to adjust, not sure yet.
@quailjailss7 жыл бұрын
fingers crossed for a good hatch rate! cant wait to see updates

She was not having it, one of my french morans went broody but gave up because it was too cold after 7 days 😞 new friend here just subscribed
@Adam.3042 жыл бұрын
Non broody hens are very caring that their egg/chick ends up with a mom. Please reduce the amount of nesting boxes to 3 large ones where they can share. You were at fault (gently) pushing her away. The hen doesnt know you’ll add her egg to the broody hens.
