How To Knit: Yarn Over Selvedge | Brooklyn Tweed

This Brooklyn Tweed knitting tutorial shows you how to work a yarn over selvedge, often seen in traditional Shetland-style shawls that are knitted from the bottom up.
0:53 To start, cast on 1 stitch by making a slip knot on your needle.
1:13 Set up row: Knit front and back (KFB) into the slip knot.
1:46 Work a yarn over (YO) at the beginning of every row: bring working yarn over R needle from front to back to make a YO, then knit into the first stitch on the L needle.
4:41 Modify this technique to knit without increasing on every row.
6:26 To add an edging, stitches are picked up from the yarn over loops on the edges of the center triangle, and the edging section is worked outwards from these stitches.

Great technique - and very clear explanations. How do you apply it on stockinette, i.e. on the wrong side row with purl stitches?

Hello, thank you for your question! To work a yarn over at the beginning of a purl row, you'll place your needle on top of the working yarn (vs. behind it) and bring the yarn around it before purling the first stitch.

Just great, looks so good, is easy and very useful! I was wondering how one could decrease after having knit a triangle, how to knit and end up with 1 stitch again? So a diamond, or a square?

Hello, thank you for your question! To decrease total stitches and narrow your fabric while continuing a yarn over selvedge, you would want to work a double decrease (rather than a single decrease) such as k3tog or SSSK at the edges of your fabric to decrease a stitch in addition to the stitch canceled out by the yarn over.
