It's a shame we can't make torpedo boats after 1908. Motor torpedo craft would be amazingly fun things to zip around with.

I really hope they never fix this bug EDIT: also they really need to implement some kind of feedback for the torp launchers, so many times I've committed my ships to their suicide run without them firing a single salvo

The game gets really paranoid about avoiding friendly fire with torpedoes, what works best is to immediately detach the lead ship after it drops its torps and then taking over the second ship in formation. Also your torps should ALWAYS be set to the aggressive setting if you want them to actually fire or else they're going to spend so much time aiming that the damage will prevent them shooting ince they finally get a solution. Honestly though? Torpedoes in this game are very similar to real life torpedoes were where if you can't get off an absolutely massive wall of torps you're probably not going to hit anything with them except for bad luck and/or undetected ships. Don't use them if you don't have to.

Since both you and Stealth encountered this bug, maybe it's time to return to 1890 vs 1940 scenario while it still isn't fixed? Because I feel like if there is a 1890 ship that can have a chance against maxed out "modern" fleet it's a demon with 35+ knots and 12 inch belt:D Damaging 1940 battleships would be hard though...

If this really was implemented on purpose and the reason it was implemented really was people complaining about overpens on torpedo boats then my question is this: Why are you firing AP at torpedo boats?

I know in the past at least, HE overpens were really frequent against lightly-armored or unarmored ships (including protected cruisers).

@@BrigadierBill It can still happen at close ranges against things like destroyers and light cruisers (especially if you build them like I do because why would a CL have armor?) But it also depends a lot on powder selection.

What I really want to know is why we can't subsurface torpedo launchers on anything below heavy cruisers? It's annoying to lack an ability to fire torps forwards. I guess devs are avoiding dealing with "ship faster then torpedo launched by it" type of situation this way

As far as I know, the only craft smaller than Battlecruisers/Armored Cruisers that were able to launch torpedoes in the forward arc were the TB's and TBD's. Light cruisers with submerged torpedoes would usually only have a single submerged tube on the port and starboard sides, as most of their lower deck spaces was given over to engines and propulsion machinery. Light cruisers, as envisioned, wouldn't really need torpedoes anyway, as they weren't designed to stand in a line of battle with the Fleet anyway, but were more oriented to serving as long range patrol vessels for colonial protection. Speed and endurance were more important than firepower or armor on these types of units.

5:30 Guns weren't 7.9", they were 8". Japanese nomenclature practice referred to them as 20 cm rather than 20.3 cm or 20.32 cm, but they weren't actually 20 cm...

I've put some light armor on my destroyers before to protect against 3-4" shells, but I never had the weight capacity to go crazy with it. I guess something changed?
