In the late 70s, in a sleepy backwater of Lancashire called Shawforth, motorbikes from all over would congregate. I now know that the rows of old bikes was simply staggering in terms of rarity & history & it's something that's probably unheard of now. This included several Brough Superior SS100s & one Brough Superior Golden Dream flat 4 cylinder. All were ridden in by their owners & some even parked them up & went off to the local Red Lion pub for beer & food while their bikes sat lined up for the crowds to appreciate. There were Ariel Square 4s, Austin Ariels (4 cylinder inline) & one pre WW1 bike that smoked a lot & had a leather belt final drive. But the Golden Dream & SS100s always drew me back.

It's me and you against the World! The new 'Brough' is hideous to the eye. It looks like someone cobbled up a bike from the spare parts bin and some scrappy leftovers. The actual engineering is allegedly spot-on, guess what, I've not ridden one! So I can't say. But hell, it's ugly as sin. Just odd proportions and awkward angles. The engine sits in the chassis as uncomfortably as a thirteen year-old boy in Confession. Hail Mary! No doubt some investors will buy it. Few people are likely to ride it. Love and peace.

These investor types make me sick. Buy everything and pose as experts in everything for they can tell how much they ask for whatever they own when they sell it, but with cars or bikes, most of these clueless sh**s can't even tell where the oil goes in… Guitars became investment items. Now folks that don't know by which end you hold the guitar babble about values of instruments because so-an-so owned one, best guitar ever. Vintage computers, vintage toys, vintage everything, all investment items because collectors… Their homes must end up looking like messie caves. Premium messy, though. Never throw anything away! When the peeps who have too much money to spend it bought everything usefull, they'll invest in your junk.

I like the looks of the old one a lot better. The new one doesn't seem to know what it's trying to be. The tank looks retro but most of the bike looks futuristic. It doesn't quite come together visually as a cohesive motorcycle, in my opinion. Seems like a bit of a Frankenstein bike.

Full marks to the guys for their attention to detail, but the big no-no for me is the engine. Those 90 degree cylinders look awkward and their offset position above the crankcase looks wrong. A more 'traditional' engine appearance (like Millyard's V-twin Velocette?) would have helped massively.

I was very impressed with the detail in the engineering when I saw these at the Birmingham bike show in 2017. Quite exquisite. Perfect if money really isn't a concern at all. Today the new Classic on the block is the BMW R18 which is also beautifully made. And rather less expensive. I bought a new Indian Springfield in 2017 instead. But then we were touring the world and needed a heavy duty machine for the next leg which included circumnavigating North America. But the Brough is a wonderful thing to look at and it's great that their are passionate enthusiasts mad enough to give it a go and make something like this just because they could. Stay Upright.

To say I was gobsmacked is a dreadful understatement - I had to be surgically extracted from its vicinity. Absolutely Gorgeous.

@Da Os summed it up perfectly : "it reminds me of those 'gone horribly wrong' attempts at café racer builds". But why? Try checking out the side profile @ 7:02 1. The tank base line isn't correct to the frame, and... 2. The tank base line isn't correct to the seat, and... 3. The seat base line isn't correct to the rear mud guard/cowl ... er ... why? ... and that doesn't even mention how awful the seat looks (in itself). 4. The front exhaust clearly doesn't fit with the rad, so it has been bent to fit :( 5. The rear exhaust was shoe-horned into place, with no reference to the front exhaust Personally, I don't like the wheel design - spokes would probably have looked better, but at this point - who cares? 6. Check out @ 7:10 - the cheap wire spring clamps for the hose ... er ... braided anyone? The whole bike looks to be a mess, that is desperately in need of a designer. ... a designer that could empathise with the original bike. Sadly, this is a failure.

Can anyone tell me if there's a specific reason for the 88 degree cylinder angle, as opposed to a perfectly balanced 90 ? Did they want some vibration for overall feel ? My bike is a 90 degree v twin and doesn't lack character, albeit it can't match this machine for visual impressiveness.

I've been riding for 45 years. From a fizzer to currently a Buell thunderbolt. I was so hopeful for a Brough re imagined. Sadly I feel T.E Lawrence would not be impressed. I feel the same way about the Matchless model X as well. I just don't get it at all. Either stay close to the original or make it completely innovative. This is the bastard child of old and new and does not appeal to me at all. Let's talk about the indicators. WHAT indicators?. On the test drive you can't see them at all. Single seat? why? straps on the tank? the spokes are bloody painful and would likely take a lot of cleaning. The headlamp. NOOOOOOO. It probably costs more than a a nice Ferrari or a Norton so why bother. Yes people were employed and designers got a gig but really. The ride looked so uncomfortable for the less than athletic host. Please don't make another model. Unless Conran designs it. Sorry but no cigar from me.
@G58
@G58 4 жыл бұрын
Conran?? Really? I think I’d let Guy Martin have a crack at it before him. No, I can agree with much, if not all you say here - on any given day, but having seen the thing, and met this chap in London earlier this year, I have to say I get it, on some levels. Yes, the straps appear redundant, but as an ex aircraft engineer, I can see why there was no other way of mounting a spun cast aluminium tank on a motorcycle frame, especially one that vibrates as big V twins must. The seat is a style concession, obviously. What did you expect the indicators to look like? We live in an era of faux passé racers being fashioned from everything and by everyone, the single ambition of the all (apart from causing those silly Bermuda triangles behind the engines), is hiding the indicators. I think the engine, forks and brakes alone guarantee this bike’s place in history. But if it needs anything else to recommend it, there’s bold ambition realised - apparently without going bankrupt or ripping off customers. And for this alone I tilt my straw boater to this Anglo French collaboration. Ride safe, and be grateful it’s not a Harley...! 😜😎

Not trying to be a spoil sport but in my eyes all the innovative engineering features are straight out of the Vincent design book, not the Brough Superior: Big speedo, Front girder forks, Double brakes at the front, stressed engine frame, monoshock rear suspension. None of these were Brought design features. Just need to look at the Vincent twins, you'll see what I mean.

I look at that, and I can see straight away that it is something special. And, because I was trained as an engineer, at a closer look, I can appreciate how top level the engineering is. I suppose that it had to be so good, else Mark Upham would not have put the Brough name on it. I like the latest model to, Its named the Lawrence, so I am biased! 😁

4 rotors in the front is indeed an interesting concept. Are they really necessary & better than one or two standard rotors? Probably not. The maintenance in itself on those proprietary rotors must be too involved & quadrupaly expensive. Why have an expensive French racing braking system if the bike is meant for the roads & not the track? It’s cool because its innovative & different, but not essential. It was always a high end bike anyway. Don’t be like Harley & get trapped by tradition & legacy. Design a completely, truly superior motorcycle for the changing times that breaks away from the mold, & please stop making limited editions just to make a customer pay more. MV Agustas 750 F4s started at $50,000 USD now they are barely $8,000 USD with low mileage.

I really, really, want to love this bike, especially if I win the American Poweball (forget Euro Millions ... imagine a rollover of $500 Million plus ...), I would buy a 1930s SS100, ala the one T. E. Lawrence was so passionate about ... But that is the problem ... they have tried to hybridized a motorcycle of that period, with ones of the current decade ... Yes, it may well be a real smooth ride, but the more you look at it, the more it gives you pause ... and whilst it is limited to 300, am not sure it is worth the on the road price point ... I would call it a heroic failure. As for me, if there was a way to get the best SS100 ever produced (something tells me that one was built c.1940/43, but please tell me if I am wrong ...), and tweak it so it effectively looks the same, abet with very subtle upgrades, that mimics what a modern bike has, abet in a way that wouldn't spoil the overall aesthetic, then that to me is a bike I would love to have ...

Design wise it’s future retroism. But is this the bike Brough would’ve built - I’m not so sure? Would nostalgia have played its aesthetic part? As a machine in and of itself I’m sure it succeeds. I’ll just have to take the word from those that have ridden it.

Like it, but would definitely think the seat/tail unit needs a re-design. If you are going with a single unit as shown, then one closer to the original set up is needed, when ridden you look like you are sitting above the bike rather than with it/in it as the original. Also no mention of the price - anyone say get change from 20-30 grand?

Only the British accent makes this so High End.Most Of the folks run the Big Inch H/D product . Loud And there's no mistaking that most Authoritative Engine. Its no wonder that Police run them .

This is a hideous combination of modern technology and traditional styling that simply does not work. If Its designer was a Dr V Frankenstein I wouldn't have been in the slightest bit surprised.

There will always people who hate a modern interpretation of an iconic bike brand. I like seeing this interested in where the company goes

Personally I think they might have tried too hard to be over the top modern vision of the original...it makes too idk too busy to jewelly looking. Mu quess some of it at the cost of preformance? Ya know it is too glittery polished. Personally I think all that needed to be captured was the engine tank and seat. Rather than being so concerned about the forks? Just like disk brakes who cares just put good forks and brakes and tires not worry about girder fork look The wheels? Id have gone for real spokes not one piece wheels that have spokes which just looks gaudy IMHO...I can picture how I would have had it done it would not have looked like a too shiny to ride showpiece it would totally look "RIDE ME! BUY ME!" ...I would want to BRING it BACK as a fully functional affordable desirable bike to OWN and RIDE

If you want to make a Brough Superior or Vincent - themed bike, one could start with a Harley, and with some creativity, come up with a bike that has a similar visual mojo as those classic V-Twins. Sort of like this, maybe a springer fork . . . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJxddLF7vODVg2g.html

People I hate to break the news to all of you but most of this new (ha ha) Brough Superior SS100 was copied from the already existing Confederate G2 P51 Combat Fighter Motorcycle. Check out the front breaks as clearly they are copied from the Confederate (an American made motorcycle ), check out the entire front end, yep, copied from the Confederate. If you don't believe me look starting at 4:45 in the link provided below to see the Confederate Motorcycle. Watch the entire section about the Confederate and you shall see the same front end and breaks. Here's the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aa9joZyep96qp2g.html
