My name is Nick and I'm a sophomore studying Biology and Economics at Brown University. I'm also in Brown's 8-year BS/MD program called the Program in Medical Education.
In this first video I go over some of the pros and cons of Brown University having just completed my first year.

I don't actually know much about what it's like to transfer into Brown, but I'm glad that my video helped put Brown on your list! It really does feel like home when you're here, even when you're struggling in a class or having a bad day. I did happen to meet all of the sophomore transfers on a chance encounter a few weeks ago. I went to the main green to listen to the annual organ concert in front of Sales Hall one night (we couldn't go in because of covid) and actually met all of the sophomore transfers just sitting out on the main green. And despite how weird this year is, they all told me that res life was supportive of them moving onto campus early (as opposed to the regular move-in day that got pushed back because of the number of cases that were popping up in RI) and that it felt like home even though campus wasn't even really open. So I definitely feel like you'll have support if you transfer here.

What's the story at Brown with freshman housing? I'm considering going there/applying, but I know that I could not handle having a roommate. On the website, it said all freshmen must have a roommate, but that off-campus housing is theoretically available...?
@nicksawicki5729
@nicksawicki5729 3 жыл бұрын
I understand where you're coming from. Brown does make you have a roommate your freshman year (with a few random exceptions) which can be stressful at first, but I can promise you that it's not the end of the world. Most people end up really bonding with their roommate and it's a great way to have a built-in friend right off the bat. I personally had a great experience with my roommate. He was on the swim team and needed to wake up super early most days for morning practices which I thought was going to be annoying, but honestly most days I didn't even hear his alarm. We weren't best friends and we both had separate friend groups, but we were respectful of each other's space and ultimately bonded I'd say. I'm a neat-freak so I was also quite worried about having a roommate as an incoming freshman. But res life makes you take a survey over the summer that asks you to self-rate your cleanliness and hours of sleep, so at the very least, these basic needs are addressed. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about the whole roommate situation. What you'll probably end up discovering is that it's actually a really nice experience that forces you step outside of your comfort zone. Off-campus housing is not available for freshmen unless you buy a property in Providence then designate yourself as a commuter student. Let me know if this helps or if you have any more questions.

i'm an incoming freshman at brown and I was wondering how AP credit works there. Do I still need to send in my scores and will I get any credit?
@nicksawicki5729
@nicksawicki5729 4 жыл бұрын
Congratulations and welcome to Brown! So I think the general Brown policy is that you can use AP credits to skip out of an intro class but they won't count as credits I think? What I've seen people most commonly do is skip out of Principles of Economics which is the intro Econ course using their AP Macro/Micro scores, skip Bio 0200 (which I took b/c I didn't take AP Bio and didn't feel like taking the placement test) if they took AP Bio, and skip math 100 if they took AP calc-BC (AB might count as well but I'm not entirely sure). I would recommend still sending your scores because that ultimately gives you the most flexibility to decide later on if you want to skip an intro course or not. Also, I think you're supposed to send your AP scores in anyway if you self-reported on the Common App. Here's a link to Brown's official policy with AP testing: www.brown.edu/academics/college/degree/policies/advanced-placement Maybe reach out to an admissions officer or somebody in the registrar's office if you have more questions or want more clarification about Brown's AP policies.

@nicksawicki5729 4 жыл бұрын
@@mai-thanhnguyen3889 No problem! Honestly I never considered not making a Bear Bucks account but that's an interesting thought. I would say you should probably make one because you'll inevitably use it to print things at some point (Brown does provide you with $50 in printing credit I believe but I ended up spending most of that) and it's the only way to pay for laundry.

Difficult to say. I think as one person put it to me, it's very easy to get a B at Brown, but you actually have to work for an A. A lot more people get As at Brown than at a school like Princeton, but it's definitely not a walk in the park.

I do, unfortunately. But I will say that my brother went to WashU and had top of the line facilities with an absolutely GORGEOUS campus. But if I remember correctly, he had TAs who taught his introductory courses at times instead of the professor. Brown really spends money on the professors and the teaching staff to make sure that sort of thing never happens. While our facilities might not be the nicest, our professors are definitely the best, and that honestly matters way more imo.
