From the Salon Frédéric Chopin at Paris's Place Vendôme, Bruce Liu - winner of the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition - presents an intimate recital of the composer's music. The Ballades Nos. 2 and 3 form the heart of the programme, the one contrasting lilting lyricism with stormy outbursts, the other building from a quiet, understated opening to a triumphant conclusion. The ballades are bookended by two early works, the spritely Rondo à la mazur and the dazzlingly virtuosic Variations on "Là ci darem la mano". And Liu continues in virtuosic vein for two encores: Chopin's "Black Key" Etude in G-Flat and the breathtaking Etude "La Campanella" by Chopin's friend and rival Franz Liszt.

thank God. Finally a version of this piece that doesn’t give equal weight to both hands. The melody is in the right hand, the left-hand plays the compliment. That’s the way it supposed to be done. A lot of people play with equal weight and it just eff’s the whole thing up. This is beautifully played with the exact amount of touch necessary between the two hands.

Agree whole-heartedly . . . for me it's the first time hearing him play. I'm going to have to watch the full concert. Audience seemed a little sedate in comparison to the excellence of what they had just heard.

I was looking for a good interpretation of this nocturne. Bruce Liu's was the first one I came across. As soon as I started listening I knew I needed not look any further. Absolutely beautiful, full of feeling (in fact I think he is crying, not just sweating profusely, at the end of the video). I honestly am lost for words...Beautiful does not even get close to what I would like to say. Thanks for posting this amazing video.

Also listen to Dimitry Masleev, another great performance, Also Grigory Sokolov and Valentina Lisitsa, are the best interpretations for me of this nocturne.

Chopin's #20 nocturne, a hauntingly beautiful piece of music. Mr. Liu plays it on the Fazioli concert grand. Its sound is so beautiful, seemingly perfect for the pianist and for this music. This is a privileged small audience in a privileged small salon. The music is so beautiful that it was transcribed for violin and many top violinists play it. I have a special feeling towards Mr. Liu because I once studied in Montreal, in the late '60s. Bravo!

Noticing how he is almost only using his 1 2 and 3 fingers for the right hand is probably the key to how accurate and expressive each note is played, along with the emotions and the dynamic movements of his hands over the instrument.

Then I heard a new sound: a living sound, like the richest, most complex, most beautiful piece of music you've ever heard. Growing in volume as a pure white light descended, it obliterated the monotonous mechanical pounding that, seemingly for eons, had been my only company up until then. The light got closer and closer, spinning around and around and generating those filaments of pure white light that I now saw were tinged, here and there, with hints of gold.

why is the music of Chopin, a Polish composer, so moving to the soul? I think you need to study the history of Poland, there was a lot of sadness in that period. wonderful performance, great Artist, Chopin's ambassador❤

Bruce, I hope you read this because I have to tell you that you are already a legendary pianist for the 21st Century. With a lifetime of repertoire ahead of you to acquire, you have already, in my view, joined the Greats. You have at your command as much or more nuance and sensitivity as Horowitz and a maturity that matches Rubistein! Please, make videos and CDs so I can collect your wondrous playing... I am not saying that a pianist like Marta Augerich is not a super pianist... to each his or her own... but IMHO, you are much more than she... for Mozart, there is Lili Krause (Piano Concertos with Stephen Simon, Conductor) and Maria João Pires is tops. You are just like them. Keep up the good work!

As a classical musician let me u 1 thing it’s the slow pieces which are the hardest and if the slow piece has such emotion it’s nightmarishly hard to get the emotion out

@@FoxyJohn You don't need to think about that, listen to the melody, it's perfect, it depends on what reference you have. In the end it's a matter of taste :) . You know, a computer can play this also.

@@tiberiuoprea8482weird comment. The reference is the autograph score. Which I have. And it’s wrong. He plays F# instead of D# in the left hand. And it’s all I can think about.

@@FoxyJohn Maybe he made errors, I don't argue about that as I don't have the score and didn't play myself this piece ever, but it's a shame that you cannot hear the melody just because one or two mistakes. I looked for a different play of this song on youtube and imo this is the best version. I don't care about stupid mistakes that I can't even detect, but the melody is beautiful and this is what matters to me. I also like Miles Davis which is known for his take on mistakes, which he loved and transformed it to make a beautiful melody, still he is considered one of the best.
