Springsteen is a master lyricist, one of my favorites... that said, be aware that most of the content of "Tom Joad" is pulled directly from John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath". This performance, though... you're right, that guitar work is otherworldly.

It is NOT pulled "directly" out of Grapes of Wrath, other than "Wherever there's a cop beating a guy." Maybe pull out your Steinbeck and check.

If anyone still had any doubts that Bruce was the greatest songwriter/performer that music has ever produced, just watch this and other amazing live performances just like it he's produced down the years. There's a very good reason he's called The Boss, and right here is a very good one.

Ghost of Tom Joad was inspired by The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. This was a book about the migration during the Dust Bowl in the early 1900s, if I'm not mistaken.

And it's a great book. Steinbeck was pretty conservative but STILL wanted to get awareness for this people. Imagine that today.... Cheers! :)

One of Bruce's greatest tracks and Tom's playing was off the chart (and Bruce's playing was superb too). What an insane live act, I only wish I could have been there on the night. It looks amazing.

The Ghost of Tom Joad such an amazing song based on the book The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck and is such an amazing song. This performance though is one of the most memorable and legendary performances.

Kudos for reacting to one of the internet's hidden gems. Bruce is a legend.... Tom is a savant. Every time I see this, I am in awe seeing Tom effortlessly work his magic in contrast to Bruce looking like he's giving himself a hernia during his solos.... both are epic!

I recommend listening to the studio version of "The Ghost of Tom Joad". The original version is completely toned down and far less dramatic than the live concert versions. Still an incredibly powerful song with Springsteen's vocals. Both versions are beautiful for their own reasons. Check it out whenever you can.

I have been that man with no home no job no peace and no rest. I'm a disabled veteran living of the meger check I get every month. I survive off less than 13,000 a year. I say survive because that's all it is is not living it's surviving. I'm not asking for hand outs I'm asking for chage in the way we treat those of little means in this country. We are a selfish disgusting nation that does not take care of its own so that those who have money can keep more. We treat the homeless like shit and veterans are only used as PR for people who want power. And most of you are OK with this as long as you are comfortable fuck the rest. This country makes me regret having served it.

I have been in the hospital for a month(!), so here is my late September request. Glad you liked Tom Joad. This was one of the three single greatest moments I ever enjoyed in a live concert. I say time for some chick rock; the Go Go's Head Over Heels was one of their best songs, if not one of their biggest. Either the official video or the live version from Wild at the Greek 1984 would be good.

Released on the album acoustic, but much prefer band version. Then, he turned it into a duet! I recently found your Channel, so I apologize if you have done these. TUNNEL OF LOVE Tougher Than the Rest -- grab it off the video release (same place as If I Should Fall Behind) Spare Parts -- same location, but please save for last Title track (video in same location, but live is better; 87-88 Tour Brilliant Dusguise - on video, but again find from Tour One Step Up -- video is fine As a bonus from the video, pull up Born to Run. Band version amazing, but this solo acoustic version brings an entirely new dimension.
