Bob Dylan has been a huge inspiration for Springsteen. In fact at one of the 108 Springsteen concerts I have been to, Bruce brought out Bob Dylan to the stage as a special guest and praised him in front of the crowd.

Actually Thin Lizzy's "Boys are Back in Town" was an attempt to get a sound like Springsteen's Born to Run album.

This is the third song from Bruce's first album that was covered by Manfred Mann. (Blinded by the Light, Spirit in the Night) No this is a Springsteen original. Springsteen didn't put any covers on his albums until much later in his career. Live, he often covered other artists.

"For You" is from Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., the debut album of Bruce Springsteen. 1973. "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?" and "Lost in the Flood" from that album paint highly scenic pictures too. Dylanesque. Yep. "Blinded by the Light", "Spirit in the Night", "Growin' Up" and more. Classic.

Bruce has always been a real wordsmith when it comes to lyrics - yes a lot like Dylan, but his own unique style. I love Spirit in the Night, Growin' Up, well so many of his, but those two that you mentioned make me nostalgic because I knew every single person in Spirit and was a couple of them at various times throughout high school, and Growin' was me to a 't' lol! Guess you know what kind of kid I was now :D

Bruce released this song January 1973 and Thin Lizzie's firs hit was the month following that. Phil Lynott was initially and for a period of time hailed as Ireland's Springsteen!

Also the Ramones, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, the Pointer Sisters, Natalie Cole. He's very talented singer-songwriter!

Bruce was somewhat burdened by the Dylan comparisons early. Probably the Born To Run album's phenomenal success in 75 freed him of that. Thanks Harri and Uncle Phil.

This song is taken to a whole different level when you hear his solo version.

Oh no, the lyrics here all Bruce! I don't suppose you've heard enough of his to know that he was one of rock's best wordsmiths going! :) Harri, you should really cover Spirit in the Night by Bruce. Btw he wrote more and had them covered than he ever covered of others' songs. In fact, I would be hard pressed to think of a song he covered of someone else's. hmm...

The lyrics are about a woman who has attempted suicide. She does not need the singer's "urgency" even though her life is "one long emergency" as Springsteen sings in the chorus (along with "and your cloud line urges me, and my electric surges free"). The singer is committed to doing anything to save her, and admires her ability to hang on. Once again, the lyrics are evocative of images and not details, and little can be said in description. 😊

I think it's metaphorical like Harri mentioned it might be; about a love relationship that he is still interested in and she isn't. I think Bruce has said it was his first attempt at a love song.

I think it's a metaphorical thing like you wondered. An attempt at a love song for a person who is not into the relationship any more. Bruce was compared to Dylan early on, so nice observation! :)

Bruce wrote the song back in 1973 for his first album. Here's a link to Bruce doing this solo on piano back in 1975. It's a whole other song and I love this version. Check it out. You won't regret it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pN6popSTsrfddY0.html
