This song is amazing. First played on reunion tour. I saw 28 shows that 2 years. This song was played at every one. Max drums were incredible.

Bruce said in an interview with Howard Stern that he played this song at Clarence Clemons sickbed when he died. It's a song about passing on. It's a song of comfort. Check out his acoustic performance of it on Howard Stern. It plays much better as a toned down acoustic song.

When Bruce finally did put this on a studio album, Clarence had passed away. Bruce wanted him to be part of the album so they took his sax solo from one of the concerts and put it ion the studio version. For me the song has two levels / meaning. On the surface you can imagine being a settler coming from the East looking for a better life, or running away from an unpleasant one, traveling by train to the western frontier in the late 1800s. As the song progresses you can imagine the train taking you to the next life. Maybe it is me, but this version seems to be played just a "tick" slower than other times?

You got it. It’s meant to be heard live. You have to be there to appreciate the message it delivers.

It's basically a show closer. It didn't make it onto a studio album (Wrecking Ball) until nine years after this performance and, as John Mitchell pointed out, first showed up on the Reunion tour four years earlier. Great song. Thanks for your thoughts.

Bruce is a big fan of the late great Curtis Mayfield and Mayfield's "People Get Ready", which is sung at the end, was an inspiration for the song.

Never liked the audio from the Barcelona show. The live version from Live in New York City is far superior. You should have reviewed that one. Born to Run is what a 24-year writes. Land of Hope and Dreams is the same song written by a 50-year old.

This song is a prayer for your soul to listen to, it's not meant for the ears 🙂 "dreams will not be thwarted This train, faith will be rewarded"

I think that it is a hymn, thus promising afterlife. Generally, we have doubts about afterlife...thus it is hard for most of us to sing it wholeheartedly. It is beautiful, and I wish we could have that conviction, but doubt is pertinent.

One of my absolute favorite Springsteen songs ever ! It was first played back in 1999 when Springsteen and the E Street Band got back together, and I think was based on the Impressions "People Get Ready" which he segued into the song on those earlier performances. It featured on the "Live In New York City" album from 2001 (from the gigs in 1999). It got a few more releases on later live albums, but the first studio version appeared on 2012s "The Wrecking Ball" and to me it totally lost its charm and just sounded condensed. But for the best live performance, you only need to watch that live in New York version. It was never released as a single, but had it been edited a bit, could easily have been a hit on the radio. Great reaction yet again David - and to see how even one of the best can get flummoxed - and yes,you will remember what you wanted to say in a few days.

I saw Bruce and E-Street perform this song live in 2012 on the Wrecking Ball tour. That version of the song was more uptempo and truly embraced its gospel roots. It added that energetic power to the music.

Happy New Year David!!! All the best too you and Mrs. H and keep rockin through the new year!! Yes, the Barcelona show audio is a bit off, I've been there live for this, especially when Clarence would blow the roof off with that sax, such good times!!!

I would note two thing things... It's a show closer and Bruce looks tired. so there maybe a lack of his characteristic Front Man Energy. I also don't think this mix is all that great. That said, by comparison the live MSG version is far superior on both frons and additionally Max is more up front on the Drums. You should listen to that version and you can hear the difference.

I’m with you Dave! Something about this song has always left me in fulfilled so to say. Maybe because somewhat monotoned throughout? No real big rise or fall or break downs lacked something(contrast)

Bruce does like his trains - Compared to Sister Rosetta Tharpe ( bless her mighty soul) whose train was a "clean train free of sinners" Bruce's train has room for kings sinners and the broken hearted

I totally agree with you on this one, if you listen to this same song from the "Live From New York City" the sound quality, the tempo, the urgency and the overall performance is far superior and i believe that it might possibly give you that missing element. It did for me. I for one would sure like to see your reaction to that one.

It's a fantastic song, but it's long and melancholy, like a farewell song, it was the last of the show, but the song itself is beautiful, a very rewarding journey ending

Mr. Heretic, the Wrecking Ball studio version may be what you were trying to put your finger on. Great background vocals and Clarence’s sax 🎸❤️

To me it’s a rock gospel song. Would work well with a gospel choir backing Springsteen like Working on a dream at the Super Bowl halftime show.

This song was actually never a hit for Bruce. But it is a staple of his live shows since he introduced it in 1999. Its the song that makes you feel like you're in the church of Bruce. Its a religious experience to hold your hands up with 50,000 other people. As an aside, this is one of the songs I personally want played at my funeral. Oh, and Dave, it is in B, but its B FLAT! ;)

I like this song a lot, but the thing that bugs me about it is the lack of variation in the stabby melody played on fiddle and mandolin. It’s just a monotonous irritation that detracts from the lyrics and message. But that could be just me.

the only thing missing from this song (as well as from all this live DVD in Barcelona) is decent sound quality: simply scandalous to have released a record with such horrible sound that would make some bootlegs pale in shame!!! the bass is crushed, the midrange seems to come from speakers purchased on wish, the treble is shrill. the fabulous live sound of the E-street band is completely crushed and the ultra-hot Barcelona audience that evening is completely dissolved in bad reverbs and echoes. I find it hard to imagine that Bruce heard this before letting it be released to the market.

I have the dvd. Not sure why but sound quality is not great. Sounds tinny on this version. Great song though.

The New York version sounds better, and I actually really like the studio version that they finally put out on Wrecking Ball.

Why it is not on the radio!? For one, this song does not fit the radio format at all, it last more than three and and a half minute, there is not enough "attention span" among the modern day listeners it seems! Second, the song happens to have some existential dept and meaning, that does not fit the radio "love me do" format at all, existential reflection is not a trend among the modern "listeners" in other words! Third, who wants to hear live music in these " audio/lip sync computer generation" days!?, almost nobody under the age of 55 would be my best guess!! In other words, there is no need to put "pearls before swines" on the radio, a radio station that played this kind of music would soon be out of business!

Maybe it was in the comments, but i think that this video has just way to much compressed sound and in this sound the thing you are searching for is the freedom of the high notes.
