This movie was in theaters the spring after my uncle had died from AIDS. It was much too soon for me to watch it, and it just about does me in even now. If you can find the clip from the movie of Tom Hanks listening to Maria Callas singing "La Mamma Morta" and translating it for Denzel, it is incredibly powerful.

Bruce Springsteen wasn't depressed for a few hours after writing this, Springsteen has been fighting depression his entire life, is very open about it, and frequently talks about how his father suffered from depression and how it affected their relationship. Many of Bruce's songs are the father/son dynamic, the domineering father, the son looking for love and acceptance, "Independance Day" comes to mind. Bruce admits his marathon shows is one way he battles depression. Being onstage, with a loving crowd, well, who wouldn't love that!!! It's so important when reviewing Springsteen material to know the context of the song, the words do matter and the imagery they create can make for a devasting blend. Mental illness touches so many on so many levels and even the biggest stars in the world are not immune. Rock On and greetings from Canada, eh!!

Oscar winner for "Best Original Song" and a multiple Grammy Award winner including "Song of the Year." Probably Springsteen's most conventionally honored track. (He also wrote the title track for the film "Dead Man Walking" which was also Oscar-nominated.)

This won an Academy Award for best song for the movie PHILADELPHIA. And it won 4 Grammy Awards. A haunting song. Bruce is a musical genius.

I can't hear this song without being moved to tears.😭 Philadelphia was such a sad movie with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. I'm sure Bruce was emotionally drained after writing this song. So many people lost to Aids. So sad. Thanks Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

So, so happy you finally got a chance to listen to this, Harri. It was from Philadelphia movie about when HIV/AIDS first hit us. I was just a young teen, but by the time I was 26 I had lost 7 of my friends to AIDS. Someone made a very good memorial video to Freddy Mercury using this song... one of the most moving memorial videos I have seen in as Bruce has such deep emotion in this one. You are right, it is a haunting song. I am 50 now, but when I hear this, I remember and hear and can see all of my beautiful young friends faces.

I'm 52, and as a straight kid growing up in the '80s, in a suburban U.S. school where not one kid was out, I remember the AIDS epidemic being almost an abstract concept. It was something that happened somewhere else, to other people. Films like "Philadelphia" and "And the Band Played On" helped me to understand what was happening. At least we were enlightened enough to not believe the lies about it being a "gay plague" or God's retribution. I did experience in my early twenties the deaths of two people my age, one to suicide, but I cannot imagine your pain. Thank you for your story.

@@JPMadden Thank you for responding. My sister was in art college, and we both grew up in a redneck county. I remember always feeling like I had to protect them when they came over here. Back then, they called us names like fag hags, but we didn't care. They were some of the best and sweetest friends I have ever had the privilege of having. Thanks for sharing your story. It was a scary time for all of us. It was also a growing up too quickly time for us, too, as Desert Storm had also started.....so....to sound all mystic and x-genny, to each generation is set a course of challenges. I just try to remember my old Beatles I heard growing up " the love you give is equal to the love you take. Peace and namaste.

All I have to say is thank God for medicine, and for people willing to step up and help. It is Hell on Earth to go through, and at one time few if any survived. Kudos to Bruce for writing this, and you for your eternal goodness and sharing.

We lost nearly an entire generation of creative folks--artists, musicians, actors, dancers, etc.--because of AIDS.

Richie Havens dropped a cover of "Streets of Philadelphia" in 1997 that gets me every time I hear it. Check it out when you can. PS. In a 2017 interview following the death of filmmaker Jonathan Demme (Stop Making Sense (1984), Something Wild (1986), The Silence of Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993)), Springsteen recalled struggling to get the song started at first: "I hooked up my little studio, and I tried for a day or so to come up with something," Springsteen added, "and I hadn't come up with anything." The director sent him a rough version of the opening scene from the film that helped him find the heart of the song: "Demme had sent me that opening piece of film where the camera moves slowly through Philly," Springsteen said. After that he finished the song in two days.

I was going through valium addiction medically, my doctor was weaning me off. This song reminds me of addiction and how it affects people to the point of suicide and fighting the feeling of helplessness. I wish they would do more for those in Kensington Philadelphia strung out with addictions and mental illness.

Bruce is the undisputed champ of movie songs. His lyrics always capture the heart of the story. Here, he puts himself in the shoes of a man dying from AIDS. He also wrote songs for "Jerry McGuire," "The Wrestler," and "Dead Man Walking." All are deeply moving.

Check out the movie too. It was very well done & touching. Thx Harri! I know it’s about AIDS but I’ve been following some really sad stories in the Kensington area of Philadelphia lately. The largest open air heroin market on the east coast. And this just reminds me of all the homelessness and drug addicts rampant in that area. Very very sad.

The beginning of the AIDS epidemic was one of the worst chapters in American history. The movie Philidelphia brings it all to the forefront. It is so hard to watch this movie and realize what was done to our fellow human beings. It is just truly heartbreaking.

This song also must be how every homeless person feels..... Just looked upon as something to rid and brush under the carpet..... Though this was originally about AIDS, it could be tethered to several aspects of life and that's what makes it so damn incredible.

Tom Hanks' character was dying of AIDS in the movie "Philadelphia". Rejection, ridicule and physical pain. Sadly, the words fit the story line perfectly.

The song was written for the movie Philadelphia that stars Tom Hanks as a high flying lawyer who has contracted AIDS. On noticing the liasons on his skin, the directors of the law Firm that he works for set him up so that they can terminate his contract because of their own homophobic values. Hanks' character takes them to court where he's actually represented by a homophobic lawyer in the shape of Denzel Washington.

Yes, this song/movie came out during the start of the AIDS pandemic, there was a lot of work discrimination back then. And some people were still calling it the gay cancer and blaming them for spreading it. It was just as crazy and political as the start of covid.

You obviously didn't watch this till the end.I'll like to know what exactly didn't sit well with you here. The second thing is,you dont necessarily have to research a reaction video.You can if you choose to,but you dont have to.The angle i take is, my reaction when i hear a song for the first time.When you hear a song on the radio for example,you have a first impression.You dont go researching what you just heard.Thats my style.Others might go down the research route and that is fine too.

Philadelphia is called the city of brotherly love. A double meaning of a man lost and alone, ostracized for his illness as well as a story of a gay man destroyed by that horrible disease.

At the time no one want to call a warning to the problem because the religionist right was saying it is just god's justice for Gays. Why do we blame others instead of helping.
