You're right that Bruce hasn't personally done any blue collar work, but he did grow up that way. And this song in particular is more personal than many in that it tells the story, very literally, of his sister who got pregnant and married at 17. They are still married to this day though so the real story has a happy ending.

One of the few songs that brings tears to my eyes everytime I listen to it. The sheer crushing truth of life becomes even more apparent day by day. Yes I may have weathered the storm but now all I feel is endless cold.

I remember my father listening to this song (he didn´t speak English, he searched the translation) nonstop while I was a child. I was a baby when it was released. I still love the Boss. Such a personal/local/universal/working class story/eternal (you know something is really good shit when it still sounds "like from the present" decades later) to write/sing.

WELP - isn't that an FM station that only plays Emerson, Lake and Palmer?

Nathans choice was better, this Springsteen guy has no future in music ( lol just had to do this Ryan)... PS I'm from Jersey and have seen this Springsteen guy 5 times and every time I say he's going nowhere. Then I go spend a fortune on merch and CDs of his. PS: I think you need to play some Springsteen from "The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle for Nathan, maybe Rosalita or E Street Shuffle. Those songs in particular are very different from what people know of Bruce's music and that album (and Greetings) sold me on Bruce for the rest of my life.
