My first time watching Twelve Monkeys (1995). This movie was absolutely nothing like I expected. Much more psychological and an ending that was simultaneously satisfying and head-scratching. I hope you enjoyed my 12 Monkeys movie reaction & commentary

I always admire this one because it is one of the few time travel films that kept the timeline/story line working in a more logical way, instead of just taking advantage of the concept to break all the rules.

Yes there's few films I can think of where time travel isn't just a tool to progress the plot or used as a novelty. It's like time travel in this film is made to feel inevitable and a practical part of our existence.

@@RealNazrax Agreed, but I will say that Tenet is the only one where i've seen it truly conceive of literal "time travel" and the timeline is not made inconsistent. Predestination, however, is a complete disaster that somehow feels being as illogical as possible is clever.

That was the lady scientist. The few theories I always hear about her are.... She went back after Cole failed, to take care of that guy and save the future. She went back after Cole failed, to get the virus and go back to the future to make a cure, making Cole's death a worthy sacrifice. She was on that flight, her past self, unaware of the key figure she was next to.

The first would counteract the logical format of the film. The third contradicts her line and demeanor while saying it.

She deliberately went back, as a result of Cole’s final phone call, which pinpointed the time & place where he was. She deliberately sat next to the guy carrying the viruses in order to get them. The scientists knew all the cities where outbreaks started and the guy’s plane ticket was to those cities, so she could intercept him in any of those places and get samples of the virus to bring back to the future for research.

I am going with the second one. Cole's mission was to serve as a container for the original virus, like he was for the spiders. It seems to me that Jones was the safety net or "insurance" in case Cole fails to return to the future. Maybe she's not there to take care of the guy but to get herself infected, allowing the scientists to develop a cure before the virus wipes out most of humanity.

Knowing the tone of the film and the point of view of the director (Brazil ftw), I assumed since the first time that the woman was indeed at the time an insurance agent, and that meant that the future is in the hands of nobodies who call themselves scientist without the actual knowledge, thus keeping the power to decide who volunteers or not, who's crazy or not.

What I really love about this movie is you can travel through time, but you CAN'T change the past. And of course, time travel will actually drive the person bananas. So few time travel films have the courage to go there, and everything was handled flawlessly. One of my favorite films. But I have to suggest a film called BRAZIL by the same director, who has a thing about random stuff going on in the backgrounds of really important scenes (and mental illness). VERY strange film, even compared to this, but a fantastic story.

Brilliant film. You really need to check out Terry Gilliam's other movies, especially (in order of pref) Brazil, Time Bandits and The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen. btw your rational for his subconscious placing her in his dreams was accurate, though not with her. In an earlier dream sequence, the face of the redheaded man changes to Brad Pitt after meeting him.

BTW, you may also be interested to know that there was also a “12 Monkeys” television series.

"I am insane. And you are my insanity." Fun Fact: Most of the actors took a pay cut just so they could get the chance to work with Terry Gilliam. No Smoking Fact: Terry Gilliam was afraid that Brad Pitt wouldn't be able to pull off the nervous, rapid speech. He sent him to a speech coach, but in the end he just took away Pitt's cigarettes and Pitt played the part exactly as Gilliam wanted. Test Screening Fact: The first cut of the film didn't do too well in test screenings, and so those involved discussed making major changes to the movie. However, producer Charles Roven and director Terry Gilliam, who attended the screenings and had talked to audience members, felt that although viewers had certain issues with the movie, they generally loved it. Since Gilliam had final cut, he eventually decided to largely keep it as it was. When released, it went on to make over five times its budget. Historical Fact: When James (Bruce Willis) is escaping from the asylum, he runs past a security guard who is reading a tabloid, its cover is the now famous photo of the fictional "batboy" that was supposedly found in a cave in the 1990s. The story, about a society outcast ahead of his time, was made into an off-Broadway hit musical. In the movie, there is an escape attempt but it ends rather quickly. In real life, Eastern State Penitentiary saw dozens of successful escapes. The biggest one was in 1945 when a dozen inmates successfully dug a tunnel from the prison to the outside. The mastermind was bank robber "Slick Willie" Sutton, who was caught just two blocks away following the escape. Most of the others were recaptured and/or shot and one of them, James Grace, voluntarily surrendered a week later. He hadn't been able to feed himself since his escape and wanted to know if his cell was still vacant.

One of my favorites! Thank you for reacting to this masterpiece by Terry Gilliam! I saw this when it came out and thought it was great. Then, I watched it again, alone, in the fall of 2001, when there were anthrax attacks going on and I was truly terrified! Willis is great, Pitt is off the charts and Stowe is so compelling - as well a being one of the most beautiful actresses I've ever seen. EDIT: I love that you pay such close attention rather than taking over key scenes. You pick up all the details and are able to put things together, even when going through an allergy attack! EDIT2: Nice commentary about Bruce Willis and his sad diagnosis. I don't think he was a great actor but nobody ever managed their career better regarding the roles he took and he always gave it his all. I mean he knew better than to do King Lear...

My conclusion is that no there was never any hope of changing anything. The timeline was set in stone, it couldn't be changed because it had already happened, it wasn't one of those branching timelines. Their mission wasn't changing the past, those responsible for sending people back seemed to know the past couldn't be changed so their mission was simply bringing information about how it started to their present.

I don't watch reactions of movies I haven't seen before, and you watched several of them and Google algorithms did the rest. Thank you for reacting to this incredible film, and I am definitely looking forward to catching up. Peace! "A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it." - Jean de la Fontaine When Geoffrey (Pitt) goes crazy his father worrying what will happen removes himself from having access to the most deadly viruses and instead gives access to the one man who wants to use it. A constant trope in time travel movies is the idea that you cannot change the past. The best proof offered for this is when Kathryn (Madeleine Stowe) leaves the exact same message in the exact same way they received from 1996. But James Cole does save the world, at least the present world. The woman "in insurance" is there to get the disease, and will then travel to the present so they can analyze it and eventually humans will return to Earth. This is popular fan theory. Thanks again for all the wonderful memories Chris. Peace.

Remember the goal was never to STOP the pandemic. The rules of this movie are that history can't be changed, even with time travel. Every single person who has traveled back through time was always there, and was always a part of the natural course of history, as weird as that sounds. The goal was only to obtain a sample of the earlier, pre-mutation virus, which the scientists said they needed in order to create a cure. So the woman at the end MAY have been a scientist who traveled back to complete the mission after Cole stopped returning (since he'd been killed)...or maybe she's the younger, 1996 version of herself and knows nothing. As far as the voice, it could be in Cole's mind or it could be someone from the future who was monitoring him. There's a good documentary on the making of this called THE HAMSTER FACTOR, and I believe the filmmakers all agreed that they wanted to make a movie where people would be arguing about it in the parking lot after the left the theater. So there are questions deliberately left unanswered.

somehow missed you doing this one! Gilliam is one of those rare film directors that you would call an auteur - his visual style is so all encompassing you immediately know it's a "Gilliam film". That's not to say they don't have their problems - each one suffers usually due to lack of budget, self indulgence, incoherent plotting, over concentration of detail over the broader message of the film and many other issues - but each in their own way are flawed gems and it's what makes them re-watchable as your mind tries to piece together how perhaps it should have been done or marvel that something so incredible got made at all! films that make you think or that create more questions than answers can either be frustrating or rewarding - depending I guess if you like to be spoon fed everything. well worth exploring more from him as they are classics in their own right - and generate much to discuss.

If you want an interesting twist on the crazy person crime movie, try Caveman's Valentine. Samuel L Jackson stars as a crazy guy living homeless in a cave in Central Park (thus, Caveman), who finds a dead body frozen to death (it was well below freezing that night, so totally a reasonable thing to find) and decides that it's really a murder by his delusional arch-nemesis. Then, in his own crazy way, he tries to track down the killers. And we as the audience are never sure if what we're seeing is real or if it's his delusions. Total mind-blow from end to end, plus Jackson's performance is AMAZING. He goes from gentle, almost scared homeless guy to violent angry homeless guy in an instant.

In a way, it's a happy ending. They got the pure virus from the source, and they can bring that back and make it so people don't have to live underground anymore. I believe that the movie was inspired by a short film about a man who sees his own death, which is based on a book. And, even though the director, Terry Gilliam, said he had no idea how a person could make a show about the movie, I do have to recommend the show as well, 12 Monkeys the series.

This movie was directed by Terry Gilliam, who was a member of Monty Python. So there's some level of just weirdness to it, beyond the serious tone to it.

This is a really good movie. But you get left with a lot of questions afterwards. If you want to see more answers check out the tv show 12 monkeys. 4 seasons with each 12 episodes. IMO a pretty descent show to watch.

This is a great movie. Maybe not Terry Gilliam's best, but close. And kudos to you for reacting to it. So few have. Your interest in the Cassandra Complex suggests to me also that you would love the movie PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, that being its central theme as seen through the eyes of it's central character (Cassie, of course) played phenomenally by actress Carrie Mulligan. This one really, really, really, needs to be on your must-see list. It's on my top ten favorites list for modern movies along with A BEAUTIFUL MIND, GLORY, THE SIXTH SENSE and HACKSAW RIDGE if that will give you an indication of how good it is. You might want to see the iconic '50s thriller NIGHT OF THE HUNTER first however as that movie had a huge influence on it too.

@@CasualNerdReactions Awesome. And if I can be so bold, 3 others of that calibre from the past 30 years that no one else seems to know about or are reacting to (for some odd reason) are Steven Spielberg's AMISTAD (starring Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman and Matthew McConnaghey), Ron Howard's CINDERELLA MAN (starring Russell Crowe and Rene Zellwegger). And Oliver Stone's masterpiece JFK (starring Kevin Costner and an unbelievable ensemble of about 20 other a-list actors). All are biopics, All have mesmerizing soundtracks and all will leave a lasting impression. Madelleine Stowe played Lt. Col Hal Moore's wife in WE WERE SOLDIERS by the way if you have seen that movie. And thank you for listening.

12 Monkeys is one of my all-time favorite films. It's alarmingly/delightfully recursive. The scene where he's watching Vertigo and commenting on the film is so ....meta.... This film is a GEM! The more you watch it, the more you SEE! Thanks for watching - and sharing. (....watch it it again and again and AGAIN!) NOT for the YT allgo....just for YOU! 😏😏

This is another one of the few great American remakes of a French film, although this time around it's not a straightforward one. The original film "La Jetee" from 1962 is an art film only 28 minutes long and is told entirely in narration over still black & white photos, but it features the time travel story and the same twist as 12 Monkeys.

I was a big fan of Vertigo years before I first saw this film. When I saw this film the intertextuality between Vertigo and 12 Monkeys almost blew my mind. Worst part is that I've forgotten the implications, so will likely have to watch both films again to remember. This is a far cleverer film than even people who think it's a clever film realise.

I appreciate your interjection into your reaction. Your eye issues clearly seemed to be interfering with your ability to enjoy the film. I don't think I've ever heard you talk about wishing you could re-react to a film in a reaction, and you did it twice in this reaction. Terry Gilliam's films can never be underestimated.. Have you seen Time Bandits yet. I had a sty in my eye a couple of months ago.

Please, please react to the show! I just discovered your channel and have been loving your Doctor Who reactions ❤ Doctor Who is one of my favorite shows of all time but 12 Monkeys is right up there with it! And the series is soooo incredibly underrated. There are at most 5 reactors who have done the series and only two actually followed through with all of it or are still currently reacting to it. The movie is great but the series is SO much better. It’s just incredible. The storyline is perfection, the characters are amazing, and you can really tell the entire thing was plotted out from the very beginning. I love shows like that.
