He did a lot of work in the last two years. His technique in 2021 is other-worldly. All his attention when performing now goes into interpretation which is much bolder and more polished. I've never heard a more captivating pianist. He almost got a standing ovation *before* his final performance at Chopin. Barring total failure in the final, he won the competition by the end of stage 3.
@johngrant57932 жыл бұрын
Totally. Listened again to those performances. I've been playing for almost all of my 68 years on the planet: never heard Chopin played at this "level," for want of a better word. I'm one of those listeners who marvels at the technical mastery of pianists like M.A.H. (another Canadian) and Argerich, and the early Pogorelich, and Richter, etc., but Lui takes it to another level, AND with art. You are absolutely right, btw; as good as these performances are (at the Tchaikovsky competition) he takes it to a completely different level at the Chopin competition. Obviously did some very effective practising in the interim.

@@tonytony8747 of course! No doubt about that, I was totally blown away by his performance in round 1 of the competition and I knew he would be the winner!
I cannot thank modern technology too much for allowing me to hear and see performances of these classical compositions. Not only this, but hear many and become familiar with so many interpretations of the same music, to then be captivated by the extraordinary interpretation of the Waldstein Sonata recorded here. Having discovered Bruce Liu, I don't feel I have missed much not being able to watch the performances of Hoffman, LIszt and other greats of the past. I doubt that such experiences would be superior to watching Bruce Liu play today.

Listening, again, to his Chopin (recordings from the competition), which led me to THIS page. Can he play Bach (which is so far from Chopin as to constitute a different art form)? The Book 1 C Sharp Minor Fugue is one of the most difficult of the 48 from a conceptual point of view. Well.... on first listen .... this interpretation is first rate. Ditto for the Beethoven. His technique is unsurpassed (my view), which obviously helps. If the recent Chopin competition is any guide, he's pretty much vaulted to the very pinnacle of "classical piano playing." Leap-frogged to the front ranks of the best pianists in this century. I guess time will tell. Need to hear him in more rep.
