Horizontal Borer in Action. We brought the machine in on Monday, Today I wired it up to do It's first job in the Workshop. Drill and tap M14 threads @ 120 deg spacings in a section of Hollow Bar. We show how the table top rotates etc.

Hey Bruce, Very nice machine. Lots of nice table space to lay your tools. You are going to love that horizontal spindle. No more side saddle on the vertical mills. Thanks for sharing. All the best, Tom

Nicely done Bruce! I love that little baby Kearns! Perfect size for our shops. It's going to serve you well and you'll be glad you have it. When you retire ship it over my way. 😀 Looks as though she's been taken care of. Adam

Abom79 Adam, I doubt if I'll retire just yet, still got the mortgage hanging over my head. I can think of dozens of jobs I have rigged up that this would have been spot on for. It is all that I expected and compliments my machines nicely. You hang in there one will come along, as this did for me, only took 4 years. Cheers Bruce

Abom79 Hi Adam.I thought that the Swiss Siev jig borer in the tent next door would be your speed. It's ABOM size, with the precision of a Swiss watch. Strangely, shipping is not all that bad, price wise.Marcel.

Such a pleasure to watch someone who knows what he's doing. Also cleared up for me the mystery of why you'd want a horizontal borer in the first place. It would have been a real pain to set that up on a mill. I like action shots. Thanks.

One other thing: We have a big chuck on a backplate that fits over the whole spindle. The machine makes a fair lathe for those very big facing jobs. The unsatisfactory part of that arrangement is that the whole thing attaches with 4 tiny screws re-using some holes that hold the spindle end together. There is probably a better way to do that. Not our idea, it came with the machine.

Marcel and everyone, Thanks for the comments I really appreciate it. The reason it is facing this way is because it has a different work height to the mills. I have a deck there that would not work with this machine, secondly this gives me a little more space without worrying about wearing a handle in my spine all the time which would happen, thirdly the way covers will slip past the crane column into no mans land, whereas the other way it would always be an issue. The crane will service 3 machines no probs. By the way I'll take on board what Marcel said about bumping with my hand, Mr Arthur Ritis is bad enough as is. Cheers Bruce

You are going to have a lot of fun with that thing. I also admire the oil can. It isn't often that manufacturers are that honest about their products, eh? So it's good to see Mr RTD giving us a fully factual description of what his oil can holds, with no punches pulled and nothing hidden. You would think that they could have done a better job on the label, though. It almost looks as if the writing was done by hand. Perhaps they were aiming for that "authentic" look?

Greg Brodie-Tyrrell Greg That is me, never got any brownie points for my writing. When I was 15 my dad bought me a typewriter. I'm pretty fastidious about spelling and punctuation, but hopeless handwriting, All my girl Fridays over the years had to go through the learning curve with my shorthand. I bought the can not long ago and couldn't resist labelling my thoughts.

Bruce Whitham Umm, sorry mate, it was meant o be tongue in cheek. Perhaps I was too subtle (or not subtle enough). Anyway, keep up the good work, mate. I'm pleased to see a few of our Australian master craftsmen showing their skills. The Americans and John Mills are very good, and there are strong similarities in the work you all do, but our climate and attitudes and language are different, and home-grown is good too.

Again, very nice machine Bruce, and I agree that the square table seems like an advantage with work holding and set-ups, plus ! imagine it to have more real-estate as well? Thanks for this nice share with us, I've finally learned how to get alerts for folks channels I'm subscribed to, so I won't miss anything even though I've let go of Facebook. Aloha...Chuck

I bought one of these saturday off a farmer who had 'won' it off a non paying workshop tenant..couldnt believe my luck when I found the quartering table and tailstock when I got there..if I had been a day later the tailstock would have gone in the scrap as farmer didnt think it was part of it!

I centred the part by measuring in from all four sides of the rotating table (I know it will be symetrical and accurate Kearns were renowned for their accuracy) with a digital vernier depth gage was perfect, now investigating other options. Andy Pugh just gave me some hints also, I am investigating that as my scales on this machine are metric, his are imperial, I'm assuming same deal.

Nice one Bruce! I felt for you when that centre drill broke, they're very good but are brittle. I had visions of déjà vu when I saw that scriber appear, as last time I snapped off a centre drill I also snapped off my scriber tip when getting the bugger out! It all went to hell in a handbag real quickly, so I suggest you not feel too bad about a couple of bloopers! For that type of operation, especially on a machine like that without a great amount of feel when drilling, I would definitely suggest using instead a spotting drill. I guess they can be snapped, but I've never seen that happen, are more accurate, and are intended for spotting, while centre drills are for drilling centres. It will let you save those expensive carbide inserts for hardened materials, and spotting drills are cheap + can be re-sharpened It's great to see that machine running and will look forward to seeing it doing some facing and boring. I love those machines, and Adam isn't the only one who's envious!

On the clamps: There should be a pair that slide in the middle T-slot and dog onto the hardened tapers for accurate 90 degree setting. I assume you can figure out the details. I call them clamps, but they don't hold down the table, just locate it.
@BruceWhitham
@BruceWhitham 9 жыл бұрын
andy pugh Yep, got that. I only have one, it is what I would call a positive zero point locating wedge, it is hardened and ground to perfection! needs tapping in whilst snug tightening I think one is all that is needed and that is all I have anyway. Les has the clamps and they must be fitted to ensure no mishaps.

I envy you Bruce-you can buy such fantastic machinery..In oz where I live I have to make my own- its just not available.One project took 18 packets plus of 8 gauge or 4mm stick rods full iron powders just for the welding..I have recently boughto 8 thout a medium sized lathe and a small mill--chinese manufacture- its terrible,one of the jaws in the 4 jaw chuck had around 40 to 50 thou gap out of 90 degrees so I had to make myself a tool post grinder to fix the problem..Its just ridiculous.I have an old hercus lathe which looks to me like a southbend knock off..I think it was made in Oz under license to southbend.. I can put shafting in the hercus 4 jaw--12 inch stick out and it might wobble 4 to 8 thou.. the chinese lathe after grinding would be 30 thou ---before grinding the chinese lathe jaws over 600 thou---yes around 5/8th wobble.....The mill well I just can not talk about it ---I am so pissed of..

Very nice machine Bruce, I never could figure out why more manufacturers didn't build smaller ones like that. I have an old beaten and abused 2 1/2" G&L. It's the other "hand" with controls on operators right. They are a first choice for weird set-ups...Dave

Love the channel! Great new machine! I do have a question: are there any marks on the rotating table to help you center up the work? I found myself wondering how you centered the work but I guess you just put a clock gage anywhere on the non-rotating part and dial it in.

Hi mate. You have got yourself a great bit of kit there. I think your wife was right though, it should have been the other way around, if you have got the same compliment of controls on the other side. You being right handed, it would make more sense. Please be careful, adjusting that table by bumping it around with your hand. Maybe not now, but you will injure your wrist cartilage, and when you get older you will not be able to move it anymore. Just Thought. However well done on that score, but how are you going to fit that machine out of the tent...... You might have to sell me one of your mills ; ) Marcel.

Hi Bruce. Very interesting video. I’m looking at similar Kearns here in UK. Can the facing chuck be set to automatically increasingly open whilst running ? ( like a Wohlhaupter head for spot facing feeding more each revolution) Does the 40 int tooling use a draw bar please. Thanks anyhow. Mike

3 days from delivery and already making chips! You are making me feel bad, been almost a year since I bought my G&L and it still sits on the trailer. It was the 37000lb tipping point that forced the barn shop conversion to happen though and I am glad it is moving forward. I look forward to some line boring action on your machine. Did it not come with the outboard support?

Bruce, thats a mighty fine addition to your shop, congratulations! Is your smelly, smoking cutting oil made by Rocol? Asking because your oilcan says "RTD" on it.
@BruceWhitham
@BruceWhitham 9 жыл бұрын
Stefan Gotteswinter Yep it is ROCOL RTD, I love the stuff, messy but the ducks nuts for stainless and hard steels particularly threading. We used to run that in the Ward's and Henry Herbert captain lathes, and the Rigid threading machines. I fill the oil cans from bulk.

That's a great question, think there are a lot of us that would like the answer to that! Also, what centers the axis table to the main table, and how does it pivot? Is there a spindle in the main table that your axis tables sit on?
