Very many interesting comments. I remember this concert like it was yesterday. Here a short report how Maestro Celibidache prepared this unique concert in Tokyo. This live concert was recorded by NHK Japan, it was prepared and organized by Mr. Amano. As you can see on the film: there are no visible microphones, no extra lighting, no visible cameras. Nobody of the filming and recording team was allowed to be seen or be walking around during the performance; the NHK team had no chance of "rehearsing" the filming, there was no "run-through" before; the team was only allowed to attend the regular rehearsal the day before. For many reasons this performance of Bruckner 8th was one of the most memorable performance of this symphony under Celibidache and the Munich Philharmonic. The day after that performance, at the next rehearsal, he greeted the orchestra with the words: "Thank you very much for a beautiful concert yesterday! We played better than we are". This seemingly silly or funny comment had a deep meaning: the concert was not an addition of 100 good players playing together correctly. We reached a much higher level by creating a unity and harmony, all only serving the beauty of the composition and not showing off an addition of individual brilliance. (More in my book "Memories of 17 years under Maestro Celibidache as principal bassoonist of the Munich Philharmonic", only English manuscript available from edelmann@edelmann-rust.com) About the timpanist Peter Sadlo: he was one of the best timpanist I ever knew; he was always perfectly in tune, he could make the instrument sound like a pizzicato of a double bass, his rhythm was phenomenal (look at Celibidache's rehearsal of Beethoven 9th); the sound was always round and beautiful even in fortissimo; and most of all, he could match beautifully to the rest of the orchestra in creating a unity of sound with everybody. Sadlo was a great virtuoso soloist, so sometimes he had the tendencies to be too loud in relation to the rest of the orchestra, which caused a lot of conflicts with Celibidache. But in the end Celibidache convinced Peter Sadlo about the efforts to BLEND with the complete orchestra and the phenomenal results you can hear in this Bruckner Symphony.

I was fortunate enough to be a bassoonist in the LSO when Celi conducted us in the late 70s early 80s and I felt that my playing career had reached the pinnacle playing for him. These Bruckner Symphony Sy.phony recordings are a great memento to a great musician and Maestro Martin Gatt

I went and listened to this concert at Suntory Hall. It was a amazing performance and the applause did not stop for about 30 minutes after the performance ended. This Bruckner perfomance has become a lifelong memory as well as Karajan's Richard Strauss at Carnegie Hall in 1982😳

I find that most performances of Bruckner's Symphonies are expedient and poorly prepared attempts at making sense out of demanding scores. I can only imagine the patience and time needed to peel the layers and produce the majesty we hear with Celibidache. I've been listening to this performance since the 1990s and I still regard Bruckner's Eight by Celibidache the crown jewel of symphonic music, in sophistication, depth and eloquence unmatched since. I apologize for the superlative, such is my enduring enthousiasm for the beautiful minds of Bruckner and Celibidache.

Fuck the experts! Take it or leave it...it's all subjective folks! For me, Celibidache will always be correct! I accept every little thing he applies to his art as being absolutely note perfect!

Celibidache transformed the Münchner Philharmoniker into the best orchestra in the world. Period. I had the great luck to hear many concerts with them in the 80s in Munich.

This symphony was written to be performed by Celibidache and Peter Sadlo (the timpanist) both of whom are enjoying their times together in Heaven with Bruckner.

AT a time of stress and uncertainty, this performance by the great maestro helps me keep confidence in humanity, even if it was held thirty years ago.

After years of listening to many performances of this symphony, few or none of them can hold a candle to this.

Bruckners "Mysterium" in einem perfekten Geschenpaket, dass man als Zuhörer und -seher nur genussvoll auspacken kann. Orchester und Dirigent eine harmonisch abgestimmte Einheit. Kein grobes "Gefuchtel"am Pult. Blicke genügen. Die Pauke höchst motiviert und mitreissend. Selbst Meister Celibidache geniesst diese Aufführung mit "seinen" Münchner Philharmonikern. Eine Sternstunde und Krone der klassischen Musik!!

A phenomenal performance of perhaps the greatest symphony of Bruckner, the genius garbed in humility! This symphony is among the most difficult to conduct & in Bruckner's day, many conductors did shy away. Sergiu Celibidache, among the greatest conductors ever, gives an unbelievable performance & is truly the best for Bruckner. Sometime back, Bruckner's 7th transported me to the 7th heaven. For me there is something very special about Celibidache and Bruckner. It's remarkable he can conduct such long symphonies without the score - that, even for a musician, is quite a feat of memory. His slower tempi work with Bruckner and he has an acute sense of dynamic balance. I love how, at the end, he congratulates the orchestra, shakes hands, etc. and only after that does he turn to face the applause. Multumesc maestro Celibidache.

I often underestimated the conductor but never this fine orchestra. In this superb recording, I wished I have never said anything bad against Mr. Celi. This is highly superior and for the most Brucknerian slow tempo lovers unique and unsurpassed live recording ever. I became one of them.

I saw two performances on this tour. Will never forget either. We could hear him singing along throughout from where we were sitting....somewhat Glenn Gould-ish. But it was marvelous. Such a genius and Munich sounded wonderful.

Those brass declamations in the 2nd movement are the most purely joyous moments I can think of. Just sublime.

Wow, what an amazing performance. It's like the music is unfolding while time is standing still. For years I only had the Nagano recording so I'm used to a long performance so the additional 11 minutes compared to that didn't bother me. Still, it's a far cry at the other end of the spectrum from the Paita recording, at an incredibly svelte (some might say anorexic) 74 minutes. Maestro is adept at making sure we hear every note Bruckner wrote and has a sure hand at making the musical logic inescapably obvious. The Munich Philharmonic plays beautifully (the timpanist is a standout) and the recorded sound is excellent.
