Bruegel Massacre of the Innocents

Bruegel’s Massacre of the Innocents is a powerful political work. Deemed to dangerous to be displayed multiple scenes in the work were painted over to make them more palatable. The work visually recounts the Biblical story of the children of Bethlehem being slaughtered by King Herod. Bruegel links the story to his own countries struggle against the abusive powers of Philip II.
Art is too important not to teach.

Thank you for that very enlightening talk. This approach to art and history should be used in schools. To put ourselves into a world in which church and state are one and the same is unfortunately not difficult today, see Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan or even to an extent, Poland. It must also be said that, according to most historians and also biblical historians, the massacre of the innocents did not occur but was invented by the writer of the Matthew gospel. I look forward to more of your elucidations!

Thanks! I love that the great themes of art, literature, and religion apply across time and geography and that we can still learn from one another. I decided not to get into the debate about whether the massacre occurred, or if it did, how extensive it actually was, mostly because Bruegel believed it. But that's another interesting way to view and discuss the painting, did the massacre have to have historically happened for the story to still have lessons and impact. So many layers to these works. Thanks for interacting.
