Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!
Joining the top tier of performance in the Brunswick line, the Perfect Mindset follows its predecessor, the Mindset, straight the top of the performance strength chart. The Perfect Mindset features the very asymmetrical Mindset core with its 2.48 RG, .050 differential and high .021 intermediate diff. For the cover, Brunswick updated the cover that was on the awesome quantum evo hybrid with some hk22 and ended up with the HK22 - Evolution hybrid cover finished to 3000 grit out of the box.
For the layout, I went with the exact same layout I had on the original Mindset. Even though it wasn’t a great match up for me on the house conditions we reviewed it on, its been a reliable shape on tougher conditions where it can clear the front easier. The hope with the perfect mindset is that it would naturally be cleaner and more core dominant in the midlane, giving me a shape that works on both house and sport conditions.
AND ON THE LANES… I was really, really surprised by how easy this piece got to the pocket from the outside part of the lane. For all the HK22 stuff I’ve thrown, this one is by far the best one for playing direct or up the lane, and when it catches the right roll, it absolutely obliterates the pins. As I moved in, it felt like the ball was going to get behind the headpin and struggle to get all 10 to go, but even those somewhat questionable paths to the pocket still managed to find a way to strike, and that’s for a particular reason.
It’s not a coincidence that they don’t fly up. In fact, this piece might be one of the most obvious most effective balls to keep the pins low in production today. You’ve heard me say is before, but its worth repeating. Pins that hit each other fall down more often, and when they stay out of the air, the likelihood that they hit each other goes up tremendously.
There is a lot of overlap with this ball and the infinity. Both are hybrid asyms and the difference in shapes down the lane is very limited, with the perfect mindset being slightly more core dominant. If you have the infinity, I don’t see a need for you to add this piece to your arsenal. The second downside is the limited performance from the inside part of the lane. I see the perfect mindset being a great step down off of the original mindset as its just a little cleaner, but still does a similar thing off the spot. But when it comes to opening up the lane and playing big angles, there are much better options in the brunswick lineup.
So when it comes to pairings, naturally the original Mindset would be the first choice. If you like one, you’re going to like the other, and the shapes are different enough to justify carrying both. To go along with those two, I would consider the dark web hybrid as it is still pretty strong front to back so it won’t force you way inside, but being symmetrical, does a far superior job opening up the lane when bigger angles are necessary.
Looking at our crossbrand comparisons, we first have to look at the Magic Gem from Roto Grip. The overall hook potential and versatility of the magic gem is greater than the perfect mindset, but the striking power and consistency from the perfect mindset in the part of the lane it is best in trumps the magic. If you’re between these two pieces to add to your arsenal, you need to ask yourself if you want a ball that kills in one or two zones in the perfect, or one that’s more versatile but slightly less reliable in carry in the magic.
Second, I grabbed the Pride dynasty from motiv and I actually see these two as being similar, but the zone that the pride succeeds in is just further inside than the perfect. Because the pride is a solid cover, it appreciates the additional volume inside of third arrow, but outside of that sweet spot, struggles to consistently do the right thing to and through the pins.
But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with this Perfect Mindset from Brunswick. The first is bowlers with a high axis of rotation. This piece offers a good balance of power and control, so those that open their axis rotation up a lot will be able to stay in their A zone with their hand, but not have to jump inside to keep the ball in the pocket. The second is sport bowlers. Just like the original mindset, the perfect mindset is more of a sport conditions type of ball, so if you’re out there bowling on the hard stuff, you’re going to love this one on fresher conditions and as transition sets in before you have to make the big jump inside.
