I used the John Deere 2038R compact tractor and the Frontier RC2072 rotary cutter to bush hog trails and create a clearing

I go through stuff like that with lots of mesquite. I like not having the cab because it would have broken glass every week. I have had my share of cuts, scrapes, wasps, bees, etc.

This just reminded me after 40 yrs me walking through the paths that my dad brush hogged, what seemed like miles of undiscovered path through just 400 acres and he would cut a trail through next to the creek beds and at 7 yrs old It seemed wonderful to get lost.

All I can say from experience if you are behind a bush hog and on a 4 wheeler or walking behind it and you start to hear the tractor bog down you might want to start paying attention because that means it’s hitting a big log and can throw it at you I’ve had it happen to me

I have a few acres of woodlands outback. The brush hog is a game changer. I have a nice little shade forest and garden in the coolest little grove area behind a tiny cabin deer blind.

Yeah, that was the only way it was getting done. Bucket is wider than the tractor and has a hardened Cutting edge

Buddy I ain't trying to knock ya.. your going good.. but lemme say this.. if u go on a property and don't know what's there do this: go up a gear and lower the rpm.. if u hit something like an old disk plow or a cinder block it will just choke the engine down.. you can always go back and make it look pretty..

If you're going to do very much of that, might want to consider a flail mower. That or an old (ie cheap) worn out bush hog that you don't mind busting the gear box off of on a stump :) I normally bushhog in Aug and Sep for some specific reasons, and I have to stop about every 20 min to clean out the screen on my radiator. Always keep an eye on that temperature gage. My biggest complaint about newer tractors is all those screens on the outside, and how hard it is to access them. Makes bush hogging a lot more difficult.

I just cut trails with the loader. Right to the dirt. Small stumps and all. Be Extra careful backing up when doing this. I had a branch almost impale me. No shit. No hog on back. The branch penetrated under the seat near my leg. Great video! Liked and all.

A/C & fully enclosed windows (if you haven't yet) and a battery operated leaf blower for the radiator. You're good to go. And maybe a battery operated angle grinder with a flap disk for touching up the blades.

Brock you need to add a pull out dust and debris screen. That will help you immensely.

That would be nice but what seems like more of a problem to me was that the front grill gets clogged and then no air even gets into the Engine compartment

@@RockhillfarmYT oh wow yes I can see the issue there. Might try a leaf blower if you have a backpack style just have it in the truck, starts warming up head to the truck and blow it out. All I can think of for that issue.

Yeah, I left my leaf blower sitting by the building and about once an hour I would go get a bottle of water and then blow it out with the leaf blower. It cost a little time but once I got a routine down it wasn’t that big of a hassle

I was using a 7' Bush Hog pull behind and had the hitch pin retainer pin come out. Well I had a Oliver 1800 and was torqued up and in heavy brush and BANG! What the F Oil all over the place! Well the tractor and bush hog separated which allowed the PTO to pull apart. PTO shaft hit the drawbar broke it off the tractor threw the shaft about 60' and sheared off the hydraulic lines. Had to get a replacement PTO shaft including the tractor PTO. hoses and fluid. Price a bit BUT NOT A ER BILL HAD SOMEONE BEEN IN THE WAY OF THE PTO SHAFT! TRACTORS are not crowd pleasers.

I carry one of the mini battery powered blowers (Dewault or Milwaukee) to blown out the dust screen and radiator every few hours on the Ventrac. Its small enough that I can mount it with bungees to the back or ROPS. By the way nice work!

I was told by the brush hog manufacturer to never hog in reverse with the brush hog down. Always raise it up before backing up or you with break off the tail wheel when it hits something like a stump or big rock.

As much as you load and unload your trailer. A set of weld on jacks for the back of your trailer would be mighty handy! And you won`t have people like ME reminding you to not forget your jack stands.

Yeah, that’s something I’d really like to get done. I just haven’t put the time into finding who I need to do it. I was going to have those put on my dump trailer before I left with it but the salesman told me I really didn’t need it because the weight distribution is different on the dump, and he was right on that Thanks for watching and commenting

@@RockhillfarmYT I'm no where near as good at the video part, buy it's a little John deere 650 and a 4ft Howse commercial rotary cutter. The Deere is rated at 17hp, but I'm thinking it's closer to 23-25hp now that I've done some work to it.

Dropped 2 massive trees, dug the stumps up, tons of work yet I kept forgetting to hit record, or didn't have time to set it up to film. Lol

I love my tractor and it’s great for bush hogging but really not for brush this heavy. If I was doing a lot of thick stuff like this I might get a John Deere 4052 with a brush mulcher instead Or a skid steer with a brush mulcher

Well I don’t claim to be an expert on all the different brands. Sounds like you’re getting a lot from your money personally I would not get a tractor they didn’t have four-wheel-drive. Seems like I need it all the time. Everybody has different uses though

Exactly. I’m visiting someone today who has a 3046R to compare. For a lot of the stuff I do a 4066 would be ideal I’m still just really impressed that the tractor I have gets these jobs done, it’s just thinking about the amount of stress I’m putting on it

Did you say that the hydraulic cooling fan on your tractor isn’t vulnerable like mine? I feel like that terrain would have taken the blades right off my plastic fan again. Great work clearing those areas!

I've come to realize, the frontier rotary cutter can cut a lot more than what one thinks. From the video footage, it looked thick and nasty, with trees more than 2" round. 👍 Great work, Brock!!

Yeah, I find it can cut anything I can push over with the bucket. I’ve done stuff definitely over 3 inches possibly 4 which I wouldn’t really recommend, but it cut it. The only limitation is if you are trying to back in, the the rear edge is not that well reinforced and bends easily. I actually think they sell another piece for the back of these that reinforces it but I did not know that when I bought mine

@@RockhillfarmYTI have not cut anything that has been 4 inches. But, I've definitely cut trees that were at least 3 inches. I was doing the same thing you were, making some trials on my hunt property. HOWEVER, it was no where near as thick as what you were cutting in. Not even close. I agree with the backside. I've been very careful backing in, since watching your video where you had to hammer yours back into form. Thanks again.

Think a skid steer and brush hog head would have been more pheasable in that and follow up with Deere in finish mow but that be too logical on thick brush like that

Have a different brand of tractor, but leave debris stopped up the radiator screen causing temperature to go up. Thought that the manufacturers should put hydraulic fans on these small tractors much like big combines, forestry machines, etc. have that once the temperature starts rising the hydraulic fan motor is reversed to blow the debris away, thus keeping the cooling system at peak performance.

Doing something like that right now but by Han with chainsaw and chipper and quad bike pulling bigger tree's out. No way CA get tractor in around the lakes 4 of them and 2 pond's it's going be long job. Great video would have liked see complete trail from drone though good job though and tough.

hes doin the rite thing back up and mow the bigger brush it would be neat if he had a big tractor with a brown tree cutter on it now that thing will tear up sum brush up to several inches wide

I'm honestly shocked you used a 30hp hydro tractor in these conditions. I ran a JD 5400 (60hp) & 7ft Bush Hog brand medium duty on 900 acres in the late 90s, and that cutter would knock down saplings but still cut grass like a lawn mower.

Any concerns for underccariage damage from running over the 3" trees? It seems like it would be a good idea to have a skid plate to protect the hoses and wiring from getting ripped off.

Yeah, I would say that’s always a concern. Most of the time I try to driving forward in wooded areas with a bucket down low and it will find rocks before the bush hog. Sometimes you’re just gonna eat some thing though even if you try to avoid it

I will pass on the word. I think these cabs are a fantastic value for what they cost and how much protection they provide. I thought they were planning to expand the models that they offer. Might check back in a while

Is that a 51” rotary cutting deck ? I was checking the price fer em , new & used . I ask cause my brother has a friend who wants me to give him a bid for some brush work over here in Boerne inside of a new hosing community. Some of it is monthly and some of its quarterly. I took my 50” Bobcat hydro lawnmower and rode it for awhile to survey the retention ponds and then the beltways of the areas and I also took a stab of mowing tall weeds and grass about 5’ high and I went slow on the highest setting bout 4” and she cut it real good . So I wanted to see how & why ya priced the large acreage where ya broke down and had that flat so I could gauge what I should charge per hour . Now on top of mowing I’d have to run my weed eater along the fences and I work alone but the current crew runs with 5 or 6 guys but they haven’t been consistent in doing the work . I have an ole school Shindaiwa double pistol grip weed wacker and I know how to work hard by myself but I’m wondering if I should look for at least one or two guys to do the weeding while I mow . Great video . Now to see how much a John Deere tractor of your size cost vs the $700 Bobcat that I bought .

I’m using a John Deere 2038R tractor with a frontier RC 2072 brush cutter. The Tractor is 38 hp and the brush cutter is 6 foot wide. I just did another video where I bush hogged 49 acres With the same set up. I came up with $75 an hour or $30 an acre, but everybody else says I’m under charging at that rate. They are probably right But cost of living in your area is also a factor

I have been looking at the Samurai Sickle attachment that clamps onto the Loader Bucket I was wondering if it was mounted on the Bucket so it was mostly in front of the Bucket it would act like a Tooth Bar but with an active cutting Sickle Mower directly in front of where You are Driving Approximate price online was $1,800 too $2,100 Just an Idea

Kenneth, I have the Samurai Sickle it is great for trimming back small limbs that overhang trails but it is limited to 1" max on the diameter you can cut. If you run into a 1" branch you have to go very slow and it basically chops it like an axe. If you where to take the Samurai into the mess that Brock did you would have been there for 6 months trying to accomplish what he did in a few hours.

I got my wheel spacers from John Deere when I bought the tractor. I have 700 hours on it in three years. No issues. I can’t remember if they were 2 inch or 4 inch. The number 4 inch sticks in my mind, but that might be combined.

How do you account for any large rocks that may damage your mower? Is keeping the bucket low good enough? I’ve run into this problem myself in. a few parts of my woods. I’m also in the northeast, so terrain is a bit different.

Sometimes you can walk the area and find them but you’re always going to miss some I have the bucket down low to catch them but sometimes that misses them too You just have to accept that sometimes you will hit something and that the swing style of the blades and the stumpjumper minimize damage to the unit. But basically you know that you will sometimes break something and factor that in Thank you for watching and for commenting

Hand on the 3pt lift at all times when you're in deep. If you can make 2 passes. First one a good 5-6" or more, then a finish pass. The best blade saver I've found is really quick reaction times to jerk it up off the ground.

@@greenwoodsbushhogging6704 That's what I do as well Just keep my hand on the three-point hitch when I know I'm getting into some areas that I may hit something that's too hard on my four fooit brush hog. I just do it for our property that we have a lot of woods in with briar scrub brush to keep it cleared out and not being so overgrown choking out the trees. I was doing a lot of that I definitely would get it tracked skid steer hydraulic brush cutter. It just shows the versatility of the tractors to be able to do some jobs without having to go to more expensive machine. I wish I could afford both myself! Lol

Like you said i keep my hand near the 3p lever but we also have a slip clutch on the cutter if you hit something too hard to be cut the clutch slip and give you the chance to react and save the shears pin and blade !

Yeah, I asked the salesman about that and he didn’t seem to know anything about it but I know it’s available. I stopped and told them not to get so close after that. I know how far it can throw stuff

For brush hogging grass I’m fine at $50 an hour with a two hour minimum which I know people will say is too cheap. For thick stuff like this I would say it should be $100 an hour. This was a close friend I’ve known for a long time and I charged him my $50 an hour rate for three hours work. I had no idea it was grown-up like this when I told him the price.He recognized that that was under charging and gave me extra $$$ If it was someone I didn’t know and I pulled up to that property and looked at everything and bid it I would’ve told them $500 expecting 4 hours. I might’ve even told him I couldn’t go through that center section unless there was an easier way around it because that was really pushing my limits Ideally this job should’ve had a skid steer with a brush mulcher or a second person going ahead of me with a chainsaw and picking trees out with the grapple Thanks for watching and giving your thoughts on it

I have a Vhaibsaw hanger for the back of the tractor but I didn’t know I would need it They told me it wasn’t very thick and then we got out there in the country and they could barely even figure out which way the clearing was

The material was too thick for that. It bends the back of the brush cutter into the blades and I’ve already had to straighten it a couple times Driving forward helps you find out what is in front of you and keeping the bucket low helps avoid Hitting a big rock or a chunk of steel with the brush cutter

Sry for saying this. But if you worked for me and was mowing going forwards. You’d be fired!!! Idk if your knew to running equipment but for you and all the new guys. Never ever go in forwards this thick!!! Always back in to it. Just cause you have a loader and it pushes a lil tree over. The bush hog is going to cut it the same!!! Never go into something that think forwards!!!!’

It is a small tractor but they put 38 hp on it so I’m going to use them all. The brush cutter is rated up to 2 inch material and I probably cleared some 3 inch material in this video I understand that running a job like this is hard on the tractor but probably my PTO driven wood chipper and my PTO stump grinder are both even harder on it Thanks for watching

@@RockhillfarmYT How did the blades on the Frontier hold up after this job? I just ordered some new blades for my RC1060 and they ain't cheap! I'll grind a new edge on the old ones and keep them around as spares, but they are pretty beat up.
