This video walks though rebuilding a CrawlMaster sport motor. Topics include basic assembly, parts, troubleshooting, timing, reversing rotation, and additional motor operation concepts. Do not break in rebuildable motors in water!!! You will quickly ruin brushes and risk rusting your bearings! Do not use sandpaper on your commutator!!! What should you do instead? Watch the video to find out.
Motor rebuilding tools/ Basic (no lathe): #1 phillips screwdriver, 2mm allen (optional), .20 or .22 caliber brass barrel brush, pencil eraser, new brushes, soldering iron if brushes are soldered instead of bolted, 0w or 5w motor oil for bearings and 10w motor oil for bushings.
Advanced rebuilding tools: 3/16" nut driver (modified) or 4.5mm spring post wrench
hobby knife or fine blade, Comm Lathe and patience!

Holy cow! My confusion about breaking procedure has been settled. There's so much half baked information out there about how to break in a motor, you don't know what's right and wrong. But this video laid all that to rest. Thank you

Im running a BL 2200kv stubby in my crawler and i must say im really impressed with the power and with a 10t pinion and 56t spur i got all the torque i need. Great motors. Was really surprised to hear at the end of the video that "do not break motors in in water", i've seen so many videos of the motors being broken in that way and was going to do it myself. Until now of course. Thanks, very informative video for a new to RC person.

Very helpful info. I used your 180 degree bell flip trick to turn my forward motor direction in my no name 45t motor. It did not have timing adjustability, however the fixed 2 bell mount holes in can let me turn exactly 180 degrees..amsome trick.

Great video! Do you have any experience of cleaning a Tamiya Super Stock TZ motor’s commutator with Tamiya cleaning brushes? The reason I ask is I can’t get them to work! I’m using the correct stand up cleaning brushes and only replacing the motor brush on one side (+ or -) but the motor won’t spin when I power it up. The motor works fine with both its brushes back in. What am I doing wrong?

Do you run capacitors on your brushed motors? I've got one like in this video and one that is a cheaper Chinese 540 that does not disassemble. I'm using them in projects where brushless isn't precise enough.

Hi John. Great videos. So I’m just getting into the scale crawler rc’s. I love your motors but money is tight starting up right now. I was thinking of getting a yeah racing hackmoto. Where can I get replacement brushes. And do you recommend a different motor in the $20 range. Looking for a 35T for my scx10 ll kit. Thanks for your time.
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 6 жыл бұрын
We have the TrailMaster Sport motors for $20 and under. The Hackmoto's are rebuildable, but I wouldn't spend the time or money rebuilding them. By the time the first set of brushes are wore out, the comm on those is typically wore out too because of how hard the brushes are. My sealed can motors have higher quality components, which is kinda sad!

Great Tutorial John! I know you don't get on here often, but I'm going to throw this out anyway.... A couple of people told me that my Wraith has a Clockwise rotation Motor. Is that true? As far as Timing is concerned, I guess I could just time it so it spins faster in forward, as you showed, by Sound... I just want to know if that's true. Carmine 🚂

I'm here all the time, but went on a trip down to the Ultimate Scale Truck Expo the last week. The regular wraith is reverse (clockwise) rotation. The Spawn I do believe was normal rotation. Just make sure it goes a little faster in forwards than reverse and you are good :D

Hi, Thanks for the really nice tutorial, I just got a new Hackmoto v2 form yeahracing, 35T. I think I ran it for like 3 min on 3v from my power supply, also, changed the timing a bit to get the minimum current on 3V which indicates that it is on neutral (I hope I did right), but still I feel that the motor is very hard to rotate on low voltage, it doesn't start like the motor in your video. When I apply 2v, 2.5v I just get high current draw, and unless I start it with my hand it doesn't rotate, does that sound right to you?. when I rotate it by hand (Unplugged) if can feel heavy resistance from the magnets. Also when running on 3v I can feel it a bit vibrating, and provide extremely low torque (I can stop it by just touch the pinion). Would love your comment on this.

Well, thats because it's only a crawler motor on the sticker and marketing fluff. They might say they are made for crawlers, but they are not tuned for them at all.

That explains why I burned my 540 hackmoto V2 35t today. The motor was barely used. It collecting dust for several years. I overheated it in 4-6 min on my stock gmade gs02f with unweighted steel wheels. It overheated worse than my goolrc 27t 540. I just order myself a crawlmaster sport 550 13t and a smaller pinion in case I need to gear down more than stock.

why don't these motors have fans on the shaft? Do they run cool without fans? Thanks
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 7 жыл бұрын
Our sealed can motors have internal fans. Our nicer rebuildable motors do not, as they run more efficiently and do not need fans when proper gearing is used.

Can you use your parts inside other motors? Say I wanted to use better magnets and a better internals in general to get better performance could that be done? Say a 12T Traxxas motor?
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 4 жыл бұрын
On rebuildable motors, yes. Not on sealed cans like the titan or my Sport motors.
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 4 жыл бұрын
at least, not easily. Would take about an hour of work and you would need to buy nice epoxy to transfer magnets. For $20 you can just buy a TrailMaster sport and have better quality than the titan and no work transferring parts.
