Animal builds have always been mighty, but that was largely because you could recruit spiders from cities (or summon with good odds underground). Assuming they've fixed web, the greater variety added by this dlc are probably needed.

the problem with spiders is that autoresolve cannot use nets and you need to manual fight everything

​@@bart7114 I find they work pretty well in auto. Not as well as a human, but not terrible by any means. And they are really cheap to recruit. The weakness I find is that hunter spider matriarch are tier 4, and eat into my imperium.

​@@bart7114 and thy definitely use nets in auto on my build. Don't know why they don't on yours. They sometimes use them stupidly and net their friends, but they definitely use them.

@@MartynWilkinson45 I encountered the issue on spider mounts. Maybe standalone spiders run on better AI. On heavy spider cavalry AI kept charging in and basically never use nets unless their first target died

@@bart7114 ah, I used scouts, standalone spiders and furys. It might just be an issue with melee cav AI clashing with spider AI.

12:50 There is a bug with resurgence when units get converted into other units on death. You can steal hostile units with resurgence if they get killed either by a reaper's "Finger of Death", got affected by a Balor's "Chaos Brand" or get killed by a Hero with the t5 chaos perk "Demonic Slaughter".

It's not a bug, if a corpse is gone the unit can't come back. Eating the corpses will have the same effect.

The bug is that the unit will revive for the wrong player after it has been transformed

Also, the corpse is not lost, it simply started walking. If you kill the zombie and raise it as a zombie yourself afterwards, it will revive as its original unit after combat. The bug happens because the unit switches factions when it gets converted, but doesn't revert to it's original allegiance even if the conversion only last for the duration of a single combat, nor does it stay as the unit it has been converted to when the effect should be permanent.

YES, if your ally wins the realm, you share in their victory. That's the whole point of forming an alliance in the first place. If only one of you got the victory, then it would mean any alliances would be doomed to end in treachery.

Actually, that is something you can change in the settings when making the game. Considering that this is a story mission with its own goals/victory condition for the player I'm not sure whether that was selected or not.

Love the dragon game play! I feel like the shadow affinity for the hero kills giving knowledge is what this build is missing. It fills in the gap so you can keep getting gold gen, plus they buffed it

They nerfed it, HARD. It used to be 50 Knowledge per hero level. So kill a level 10 hero, gain 500 knowledge. Yeah. 150 per hero is much more balanced, now.

Here's a bit of a challenge: Do a run where you have to reach the highest tier of Good alignment, and stay there. For a bit of extra spice, that means no pillaging (except maybe spelljammers cos that'd be a little insane. Or you can keep the insanity.) I've just noticed that how you play, you never really seem to go good alignment (in the last couple runs at least, dunno about your first few) so it'd be cool to see how much of a master of this game you are by forcing that restriction and making you go into a new style of play.

Agreed, with pillaging being an evil act, letting easy fights flee for no xp ect, playing good alignment is actually harder

22:28 Sanctuaries prevent you from pillaging other improvements while intact, so if units are able to pillage anything else successfully, it's safe to assume there aren't any. That's especially true if the opponent has less than 2 order affinity, since that means they can't have any order tomes. On a slight tangent, I honestly think certain improvements should be pillage-able without alignment penalty, if they have significant military use or are evil-associated. Sanctuaries might be an exception with order's typical good-alignment association, but stuff like spell jammers, teleporters, chrono gates, doomdepth trenches, and especially demon gates shouldn't inflict an alignment penalty when razed (and maybe even give good alignment in the case of the latter two). Ruler statues could have an alignment change applied to the pillager that's the inverse of the pillaged ruler's alignment. That said, golem mines and similar minor-buff type improvements would be harder to justify pillaging without alignment penalty, since most of those imply ordinary civilians being present.

You can trade occupied tiles to one of your cities, as long as the tile is bordering your city and the city in question has enough population to be able to annex it. This will not incur any alignment changes at all and is possible even if the occupied domain has an intact sanctuary.

When you started putting out only AoW4 content I basically stopped watching. BUT after watching two of the campaigns I completely fell in love with this game. I love to see all the different stuff you can do. It makes me excited now that you are so enthralled with this game. I can't wait to see more

@PotatoMcWhiskey On Slither dying despite Resurgence (12:50). Just like in Planetfall, Resurgence abilities do not work if the corpse was destroyed (which happened here as Finger Of Death auto risen zombies out of it).

26:00 What's the deal with wyvern units, you ask? They are dragons, animals and fighters all at once so there are very many unit enchantments that stack on them! They count as Low Maintenance and they fly over mountains and walls. They come with elemental damage, which might inflict burning or freezing?

they should have made the new units be one huge evolve chain. slither hatchling to slither to wyvern hatchling to wyvern to young dragon to dragon and stat them all accordingly. it would be incredible to start the game with a stack that grows up into the army you end the game with. and because of the incredible xp cost to get all the way up include a chaos unlock that lets you pit your own armies against each other combining their experience + extra for their units tiers. so it would give us a strategy that never builds any high teir units just spamming low tiers that eat each other as units get near death to make your higher tiers.

Wyverns are Tier 3 units, same as full-grown Slithers, they are not an endgame stack. In fact what you're suggesting is a nerf, full-grown Slither -> Wyvern Hatchling is a direct downgrade. Edit: Okay I see the "stat them accordingly" now, but that doesn't fix the fact that you would lose access to unit diversity early on Edit 2: And it doesn't make sense from a lore standpoint, they're all entirely different species

Like most of the builds in the game you gotta really focus on buffing them to make them really stand out. Getting the tome of beasts & the wilds was already pretty solid for animals (plus the free recruitment from annexing provinces in the nature tree) but now with the tome of evolution its even more powerful (even with the nerf to the aforementioned free recruitment)

I noticed that u never even consider visions of woe as a signature skill. It is very useful in battles you are outnumbered or at least weaker than the opponent. Forcing enemies in a 1 hex radius to deal half damage (fumble) for a turn has saved my ass a few times. I know the best defense is a good offense in these games but there’s times where you don’t roll or need a nuke type skill for a signature skill and it is a super good option.

Seems like you've been evil every single game. Is it just impossible on brutal difficulty to be good because you need the pillage income and the xp from fights?

Its not impossible. A couple other KZfaqrs play on brutal and can maintain good and pure good alignment.

You miss out on a *lot* playing good. Almost every event is a choice between a good reward with evil allignment or a bad reward(or *no* reward) with good allignment. Good allignment also can't trespass, pillage, raze, migrate, or easily declare war. That makes fighting an enemy really rough, it can be hard to stop an AI snowball if you want to stay good. Additionally, the only downside to being evil is increased odds for "negative events", but you get like 1 event every 10 turns and even the few negative ones are rarely bad. There's also the relations thing but it doesn't ever feel that impactful. The system feels designed to make the AI gang up on "optimal players" and support RPers, which is actually pretty smart from a design perspective. I just wish there was more tangible reward for being good to make the events feel less one-sided on a turn to turn basis, good feels pretty useless if you aren't playing a map with tons of free cities (for example; on every single campaign mission)

Game isn't that hard, you can do it but it just sucks to do things that are suboptimal. Though if you go for an order build being good aligned is actually a good play since it gives you more than pillaging would.

the Slithers and Wyvern units certainly seem like they synergise best with Chaos and Nature, Materium and Shadow seem like they could also be a good fit, but seems if you want to be a dragon Order and Astral are weaker options, though that kind of makes me want to try and make them work.

I've recently played an animal only game, pre-Dragon's Dawn of course, and the animal armies are indeed trash! It wasn't until I got the Tier V enchant that the animals started to feel OP, the way other units can feel around Tier III enchants.

Quite simply, almost every other path you can choose is quicker, easier, cheaper, more seductive. By the time the spiders get rolling, I can otherwise have Tier 1 units hitting harder, for far cheaper. They won't have the bugged and soon to be gone super spider web (and all summons are getting nerfed too), but I'll be able to field multiple super T1 terminator units per each spider, and I'll build them faster and can easily replace them if they actually die... which they only will in autoresolve. Or better yet, use heroes, which are going to be cheaper than T3 or T4 units. T4 and T5 units are inherently flawed, because they use Imperium, which slows the most significant way to strengthen everything (which is better, 150 Imp/turn or an army of Phoenix?). The Phoenix in particular, because it depends on dying, requires too much healing to remain reliable when facing back to back battles - as a T4 unit, is C at best, and only because it gets a 2nd life. Also, you can't even reliably spam the Phoenix as you suggest, sometimes it comes out 3 times in a row, sometimes it doesn't come out 6 times in a row, so it's incredibly expensive to get however many of them you think is most effective (unless, like me, you think the most effective number is 0). tl;dr: animal army buildup way slower than anything else

It feels like every 2-3 videos you make mention of having to adjust your tier list because apparently everything you'd ranked as trash you have found power in.

it feels like the alignment penalty from pillaging is too high. especially considering it is a strategic and not just opportunistic move.

They penalty for pillaging once is tiny. It's only high if you pillage a lot. Being evil is kinda it's own reward, since you can get lots of money from pillaging and burning. I feel it's about where it should be if you look at your karma as a currency. If you're struggling to keep your karma up, remember you can get karma by forgiving grievances, releasing prisoners and starting fully justified wars. You keep all the prisoners items when you release them, so you really only lose the value of their corpse.
