What I appreciate is the Brutal Legend bleeds effort. Everywhere you look there's more detail to appreciate. They made a live action menu intro and immersive creative main menu sequence with a wonderful sense of ernestness. You can tell everyone on this project loved being apart of it. Flawed and strange it may be, it has soul in abundance.

Yeah, now the overabundance of exploitative monetisation, abuse of developers and the slow sidelining of the premium single player narrative experience have been added to the pile. At least we have colour back now. The late 00s - early 10s were really very brown

Keep in mind, it's not like the problem of too many fucking sandboxes has gotten any smaller. It's just that all the other monolithic problems have gotten even bigger and bigger, enough to overshadow. There's still too many fucking sandboxes.

Brutal Legend has soul. It is refreshingly earnest and original. It manages to feel very genuine while at the same time satirical. Just great all around. Jack Black really brings his A-game in his role, and it shows throughout the entire game. The game has such a great vibe, and the way the characters, environments, and game-play mechanics meld together makes it extremely engaging. Brutal Legend really is one of the most underrated games of its' generation. Good times.

While I agree and love it for that, the problem with it is that its a VIDEO GAME. If it was a TV show in the vein of Samurai Jack then I would recommend it 'til I'm blue in the face. But its the GAMEPLAY in said video game that made me go, "Yeeeeeeeeeeah. I don't blame you for backing out."

@@raggedcritical Fair enough. Although, I think that aspect of the game could have been refreshingly fun and unique if it had been more thought out, less lacking in polish, and was integrated into the rest of the game more seamlessly. I don't think it's a terrible concept, just came up short in execution. As it is though, I still enjoyed that aspect of the game. It made for a nice change of pace and made acquiring new allies throughout the story more rewarding as they contributed new units to the RTS portions. Gave a bit more weight to the whole "Building an army" vibe of the plot. I would have absolutely loved a sequel to flesh out and polish the rough edges of the first game. It's such a shame the IP has been forgotten...

I have to admit that the side missions were utterly pants, and the main battles were confused in their executions, and the world felt like it needed more filling with 'things' to do. Having said that I am a little in love with the world it created, with all it's tongue in cheek metal glory, and an artistic vision deserves that deserves a pat on the back. I found the love story with all it's predictable tropes was rather well done. I would love to see a Brutal Legend 2 with a larger world, side quests which don't suck, and volume turned up to 11, but alas, EA are the devil's own spawn, and because BL never mad trillions, it'll never see the light of day.

8 years late but I would like them to actually do the opposite. Tighten the scope, focus on one gameplay style, be it action or rts and run with that. There has never been and never will be a game that juggles like 3,4 different games in one and is actually good. They might try but it's always better to have a definitve goal with your game.

I could be wrong yahtzee, but a sand box game is a game where you can have fun exploring, and honestly, when the world is composed of ingenius landscapes based around heavy metal covers and is populated by incredibly awesome animals, and, if finding, taming and riding a panther that shoots lasers out of its eyes, through the ruins of a lost civilization of amazon metalheads who ride fire breathing Gorillas, isn't fun, then you don't exactly share the same idea of fun as i do! :P

I get the feeling this game would be better received if it came out now, post LoL and Dota 2. A lot of the criticism was it doesn't know what it wants to be, but I think with the recent shift in gaming, it might have that other genre to be compared to, and then maybe people wouldn't be so confused by it. For reference, I am a huge metalhead, and enjoyed every second of the single player campaign, and loved the multiplayer as well, when people used to play it.

Spelled like "Maasband" Yet, his way to say "daß" is wrong and even if it was right would be outdated, as we spell it "dass" nowadays. As a gentleman who enjoys a good RTS, Jack Black's brand of comedy, and Psyochonauts, I did enjoy this game quite a bit. That said, Yahtzee is 100% correct. The game is a little buggy, and the game tells you most of what you need to know when you stumble upon it or in cutscenes that most seasoned gamers would skip. I got as far as flying hairman's fortress before I figured out the Motor forges and how to use them. I actually only figured out what the heck to do the dragons when I was stuck fighting Emo Sally and her gang in the spooky abandoned mines. Actually, that is where I discovered you could use the car in the battle of the bands scenario, to great effect, as I had only been investing lighters into my ride so that the "protect the wagon" missions weren't so bad. After grinding through enough side quests and collectables to afford my Jack Black a new axe and a new... axe, I promptly went on a merry stroll through the rest of the game. As far as the RTS aspect is concerned, it isn't great, but there certainly have been worse attempts. I did like how you could go ham if you needed to hold an area while your minions got some objective or simply got to your location, or could go to a "commander" mode where you could look down on the battlefield. I also liked the usage of Metal solos to really dominate the battlefield, but felt like most of them were more or less a cop out for actual RTS controls, and as a result really felt awkward. Overall, the environment and level design were spot on, and blended perfectly with various albums and soundtracks respectively. While I felt that alot of things could have been told to the player, in the end if you explored your sandbox and payed attention to literally everything with an RPG mentality of "collect and search ALL THE THINGS", this game would prove none to challenging, while if you stopped any of that for even a couple missions, you immediately felt the effects. I would say this is probably one of the better itterations of an action RTS RPG that I have seen in a long time, both getting you into the action while controlling a whole battle field, all the while maintaining your character. A good game, but definitely with it's own shortcomings.

You know, I would like to see Yahtzee come back and re-review this, almost as an early nostalgia thing. Something he and a few other reviewers have been on about lately is that games should be fun at their core. They should be an enjoyable experience to play, and Brutal Legend, in my opinion, is one hell of a fun game, even with its flaws. So many people here talk about how much they loved it, even if they arent necessarily fans of heavy metal, and I think that really says something about it. Its just good old fashioned game made for giggles and making you feel like a badass dressed as Jack Black on steroids. Thats something I think a lot of new games are missing, how to make the player really feel the experience. This is one of the few games I can come back and point to and say no matter its flaws, that was a damned fun experience.

a few things about this game, i have to agree that the campaign was painfully short, it was like there were only two battles after they finished explaining everything to you in the previous tutorial fights, also motor forges are on the map as well as a lot of other things, frankly without the map id probably have been forced to actually take a glance over at the side quests, tedious and pointless as they may be.

I actually had a lot of fun with Brutal Legend. I wasn't expecting the RTS elements, and it's interesting to see it follows the Dawn Of War school of thought, i.e. assert dominance on the battlefield and capture more fan geysers to gain more fans (your sole resource in the RTS levels for recruiting units), recruit squads/vehicles/beasts at your own discretion with a cap of 40 squad points, upgrade your stage to gain more powerful units, and (the great unique thing about Brutal Legend) play guitar solos to either help your side or harm the other - e.g. stop the other team from building units, or dispel all negative buffs on friendly squads for a short period of time. Though I do feel that the cooldown on the non-necessary (i.e. not the "capture fan geyser") solos is a bit long, e.g. the "massive damage large A.O.E." solo takes some 7 minutes to cool off.

The thing: Was the game awesome and fun? fuck yeah! Would you play it again? probably not. This games totally deserves a triple A sequel for that weird and inconclusive cliffhanger.

i love brutal legend mostly cause if you look at the environment... it's HUGE! it's not a background or some mountain models no it's fucking MOUNTAINS! and in the rts part... it's what rts should have, control a character completely and go berserk like in DK1 but NO! this is to awesome for modern games and a original story? FUCK THAT we need more army stories! not enough? well army in SPACE vs armies from SPACE! and more slow and detailed combat of history. I want more games like brutal legend but SRLY! psychonauts is a better platformer then mario! FUCKING MARIO! buy it and you will understand why.

Honestly, I'd still consider Brutal Legend one of my favorite games. Is it perfect? Hell no. But it is just dumb fun of the highest caliber in my opinion, in spite of its flaws. I typically am not a fan of RTS stuff, but the simplified way it's handled in Brutal Legend keeps it from being a sticking point for me over all, since while it is a change from the preferred gameplay, it's not done in a way that completely detracts from it or feels too out of place. At least in my opinion...... Honestly though, particularly given how many games these days are boring cut outs of the same things over and over again, all focusing on who has the prettiest graphics that'll be outdated in a year or which one has the more "in depth" story that's predictable from a mile off and lacks any sense of joy. We need more games like Brutal Legend that exist just for the sake of "we want to do something stylized and fun". It's not perfect, but it's the kind of game I'll be going back to years later, (which I do every few years), while a lot of the games these days I can't really see myself replaying in the future......

I can't believe that back in the day, I let this review deter me from buying Brutal Legend (I also really dislike RTS elements). However, having now played it in 2016, I've been thoroughly impressed. Much more so than fucking Psychonauts. Psychonauts this, Psychonauts that. Sick of hearing that one. Played them both back to back this summer: Brutal Legend outshines Psychonauts because it feels like a new TYPE of game. Psychonauts was just a lousy platformer.

thats a shame, should never come here looking for recommendations. yahtzee is a critic not a reviewer, he bashes on every flaw he can find in games. as for psychonauts, its not for everyone but for me i didnt pay any attention to the platforming aspects. i found that game just hilarious. some interesting easter eggs here and there too, and i love the bacon psychic link lol

Yeah, 18 year old me really loved Yahtzee's mean reviewing and there were plenty of games that I bought that I really agreed with him on. With that in place, I just went with the assumption that BL would be a bit lousy too! As for Psychonauts, let me just amend my comment a little. I did genuinely love the story to Psychonauts (incl. the bacon psychic link!) and had fun with that aspect. I'm just a little surprised to find that Psychonauts gets put on a pedestal as the pinnacle of Double Fine GAMING. Psychonauts as a story was brilliant, certainly on level on many 3D cartoon films, i found.

ah, yeah if you watch his video on psychonauts he mentions it has a lot of gameplay issues, his main reason for supporting it so much is how much more unique and funny it is then everything else that was being released at the time. i like to imagine him thinking of all the games that have more sequels than sense while foaming at the mouth lol

Great game. I loved the art style and environment, the story (especially the legends), driving around in a hotrod while listening to your favourite metal tracks. The one critique I have is the fact that the ending comes a little 'out of nowhere', leaving me with the feeling that the game was supposed to be longer.

I have played it. In the RTS part, all it does is lets you buy troops and tell them to stand somewhere. They will, for the most part, do their own thing. i liked it a lot myself, although the campaign does fizzle out a little quickly at the end. After I beat the final boss, I was genuinely suprised that he was the final boss. It's fun though.

Oddly enough the endless searching of an overworld for storyline was exactly what Psychonauts did. After completing each level in a persons head you have to run around looking for every NPC, sometimes in obscure locations like on rooftops, or else you miss half the game.

Ooooh I'll disagree for sure that what a motor forge is and where to find one is 'Left unsaid'. Just before the mission where you escort the tour bus for the first time a cutscene zooms into where you can find the first one, all you need to after that is remember what one looks like.
