In the defences of auto makers today, taking the new shelby gt 500 for example, no human can shift faster or more efficiently than the dual clutch auto system provided. Whereas I agree, there is nothing more satisfying than smashing gears by yourself ford set out to build the best performance car possible. And that meant taking the human error out of it.

It's marvelous to see the view that drivers Jacky Ickx and Brian Redman had when they co-drove a GT40 to victory at the Spa 1K race back in 1968; beating the newest Porsche 908 prototypes in that race. But, that was also back in the old race course configuration of 14 Kilometers/8.8 miles length.

NASCAR muscle in a sports car was a beautiful thing. Those Southerners knew how to make an engine roar and my Dad got to experience it as an engine man from California for two years, '69 and '70, building Camaro engines for Pete Hamilton at Gene White Firestone in Atlanta in '69 and Mustang engines at Bud Moore Engineering in Spartanburg, South Carolina in '70, the year of those orange-and-black Boss 302 Mustangs driven by Parnelli Jones and George Follmer.
