I cant wait until the plant cringe wyverns video

Sometimes I just get floored by just how massive things are in Monster Hunter. A baby or at least juvenile Duramboros is already larger and certainly heavier than a human, and would likely be classified as megafauna in our world.

Duramboros's helicopter tail spin isn't actually a time waster. The long spinning wind-up portion of the attack only has a hitbox on the tail club, so once you get past the club (or if you were already inside), you have a gigantic opening to attack its legs. Dealing enough damage to the legs during this causes Duramboros to trip, granting you another large opening to attack.

If Duramboros was to get the World treatment, I think something that could work with it is the idea of endemic life sticking to and growing on the body, in a sort of symbiotic relationship, considering how plant life already grows on its body, it would make sense for smaller animals to grow on their as well, maintaining its body like how the oxpecker is with African Rhinos.

3:40 I understand that human biology is much less your wheelhouse than general ecology, but it's been found that not only are countries that consume much more sodium (such as countries that eat kimchi, a high sodium fermented vegetable dish, with every meal) have better health outcomes on average. In addition to this there was a study that found that as much as 6X the FDA recommended amount of salt a day showed better results than the actual recommendation. Now, 6X is likely too much, but it goes to show that the FDA recommended salt intake is very clearly too low. Especially because it's much easier to just evacuate extra salt through peeing than it is to retain salt to make up for a deficit.

Both are great examples that herbivore doesn't mean a completely harmless and dull creature and that they're just as important and notable as the carnivores and other monsters in their ecosystems

I personally think that the Hoarfrost Reach was a lowland coniferous forest that surrounded the volcano. Mostly because of Viper Tobi which, despite generally being a hated subspecies, I think has one of the greatest mysteries to it by its mere existence, considering how much it stands out next to the rest of the Hoarfrost cast. It would show how this change from volcanic lowland forest to boreal would have affected some monsters. Banbaro afaik is an 'invader' because the Hoarfrost's much colder temperatures result in lower food quality and abundance, so a lot of the population is migrating out. Versus poor viper tobi who seems to basically be a species whose habitat isn't around anymore. With its poor insulation and camouflage it might very well be on the brink of extinction, with relic populations remaining largely in insulated caves and springs.

The giant herbivores are always a treat considering the saturation of predators in the franchise, it's nice to see more monsters that tolerate other animals and even humans if not bothered. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a video on Kulve Taroth since her behavior and el dorado as a whole are quite interesting, the entire area might just made for courtship and maybe they eat ores like gold and gilding the entire area is showing off how well of a female is. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this and maybe perhaps what a male might look like.

While I don't think an open-world monster hunter game would work practically without a complete overhaul of the core gameplay loop, I can see why the potential for monsters like nercsylla, duramboros, banbaro, almudron, the magalas, and others to actually change the enviroment would be cool to see. Also, Tetsucabra and Duramboros were cheated in MH stories 2. We could have 5 rathalos, 2 of which were only available postgame via updates, but heaven forbid you wanted a decent power monstie that was not either a fire monstie or rajang.

Considering that the classification system in the Monster Hunter world is more based on physical characteristics rather than genetics, it may be possible that Brute Wyverns like Duramboros and Banbaro evolved from, or at the very least shared a similar ancestry as, Herbivores, specifically ones like Apceros and Aptonoth, to a lesser extent Larinoth, and quite possibly Kestodon. They do share similar features. An herbivorous diet, large clubbed tail, considerably large size, and an armored head and back; Kestodon is also bipedal. The main difference being the Brutes adapting to foraging and browsing on shrubs and trees while the Herbivores (save for Larinoth who feed from the treetops) stayed grazers and low-browsers on all fours (save for Kestodon). Also, if the Duramboros stomach diagram is still accurate, then this would imply that Duramboros (and possibly Banbaro) came from an herbivorous line rather than a carnivorous one like most other Brute Wyverns.

I've never really seen Duramboros' spin as a time waste attack as hitting the legs during it results in a topple giving you one of the only ways of reaching the weak zone.

I feel like the Banbaro roaming thing could be more acceptable if it had different coats based on where its fought, with a darker, shorter coat for the warmer regions, and the usual heavy white coat for Colder areas. It'd really just be a reskin but it would really add a lot

I love banbaro and he sits firmly on my top five monsters. Love his bulldozing shenanigans and I just wish he was higher tier. His armor was also one of my favorite designs and the hoarfrost reach theme is such a banger to fight him with. Hopefully we get more giant herbivores soon.

It's an interesting change from just more giant carnivores, since Monster Hunter has a bit of a carnivore bias with its large monsters. I love that Banbaro looks like a giant moose, especially since moose can be surprisingly intimidating (especially mature bull males) under certain circumstances - despite being herbivores - arguably just as much as brown bears and cougars. Please do a video on Nargacuga next

These two are amongst my favorite monsters in the series. I find the bulky herbivore therapod archetype really apealling for some reason

The brutes wyverns are my prefered monsters, Bambaro won in my hearth tough.

Although it's off topic and is about another monster. What could possibly the reason that Agnaktor and Uroktor communicate with beak clapping instead of growls, hissing and similar sounds? Could it be that the vulcanic environment would drown out such noises due to the rumbling etc in the background and the beak clapping is more distinct and thus more noticeable?

I'm pretty stoked you talked about ruminant stomach microbiomes and how important they are, I think it's easy to forget how important our unseen friends can be. Though it's a bit off topic, it's also interesting that fecal transplants can be a means to treat people with a couple of types of bacterial infections instead of antibiotics. Anyways, awesome video as always.

These are some of the videos I enjoy the most, MH hervivores are just so interesting. Always shared that thought of Banbaro being too weak for its size ever since iceborne came out, it feels weird, let alone its role as an invader and even more so when it shows up on the lava filled areas. And how cool would it be if Duramboros actually got the world ecosystem treatment with a diablos-like turf war against other bulls of the same species. I need more of those so bad

Reused turf war animations in IB felt exceptionally weird to me with Banbaro vs beotodus, I get that their role is pretty much the same as barroth and jyura but it still felt awkward seeing beo trying to wrap around Banbaro, almost double the size of Barroth... Tho I guess the initial impact from below makes more sense thanks to its giant horn

Duramboros will always have a special place in my heart, it's easily my favorite monster in the series for a number of reasons. 3U was my first game in the series and I was only ~11 at the time so I wasn't really able to grasp the complexity of skills and elements and whatnot, I played hammer because it did big damage and just used whatever armor I thought looked the coolest. I definately carted a lot, but I never hit a complete wall until I got to Duramboros. I just couldn't kill it in time, either I'd throw myself at it until I ran out of supplies and died or I'd run out of time because it has *so* much damn HP. It was really frustrating, but as a hammer main I could *tell* this thing would give me a cool hammer once I killed it so I didn't want to give up. I had to change my approach and wound up really digging into the skill system which is what got me hooked on Monster Hunter as a whole. Probably wouldn't be playing still if the game never made me learn it like that.

What a banger! I've already loved duramboros, this episode with respect to duramboros just feels complete. Incredible work. The comparison with diablos digestion was really interesting. It's true that cacti are much simpler to digest, but this made me think again about the adaptations of cacti and how they work in monster hunter. Because they're not toxic like succulent euphorbias, with or without mean spines, i ask myself who the cacti of monster hunter are actually deterring with their single layer of defense. In the dominican republic where giant sloths went extinct just some millenia ago the cacti on the ground are all equipped with stiff spines, while the pads of the tree-like consolea moniliformis don't grow any spines above a height where large herbivores would have been able to reach. So diablos... maybe he's just too tough to care? Afterall it's the endangered cyclura iguana that still climbs the spiny trunk to munch on the cactus' fruits. I seriously wonder where these cacti are coming from and staying the way they are. With the animals in the focus, the plants might just be an afterthought and in the end, i don't mind it all too much. Duraboros' helicopter attack is supposed to get leg staggered during the spinning, which will trip it in a way, where the humps are right in front of you. It's definitely still annoying to get around sometimes but learning to effectively trip it out of that attack is just the best way to cutting off a lot of tme from the hunt. Maybe it can feel like this gimmick happens too much though, i can agree, but i think it's still neat design.

Great episode yet again! I personally love Duramburos, and I'd love to see the Rust subspecies have a turf war with Diablos. Duramburos' moss and fungi coating makes me wonder if it would have any symbiotic endemic life using the wyvern as a sort of moving microbiome

Leave it to UHC to not only make me appreciate two brutes that I for the longest time just thought of as " the helicopter and the snowball bulldozer" but also make me rethink the overall evolutionary resoning behind why pandas subsist off of bamboo and lead me to fall fown a rabbit hole of how dietary needs do not entirely equate to dietary preferences within an organism's lifestyle, all within a nice concise video package. Quality stuff as always man

I'm unaware whether it's been brought up before, but personally, I believe Duramboros and Banbaro to not only be relatives of each other, but Kestodon and possibly Gastodon as well. I also think both of them, like Kestodon, are, or are at least derived from Pachycephalosaurids. If you look at Slagtoth and Rhenoplos, two clearly Ceratopsian adjacent monsters, both feature external ears, just like Kestodon, Duramboros and Banbaro, so I like to think external ears are a trait that evolved within MH's surviving lineage of Marginocephalians.

Banbaro being an invader is something that I've always been nitpicky about. Even with their adaptability, locales like the Rotten Vale and Elder Recess are poor choices for Banbaro to inhabit. Lore/Ecology wise; while these areas may secretly have plentiful amount of nourishment for it, they're also inhabited by some of the most dangerous monsters in the New World, like Tigrex and Glavenus. While Banbaro may put up a fight, chance are that it'll lose to them or even get killed. Gameplay wise; I feel like why Capcom put Banbaro everywhere was so its antler plow attack gives you different status affects when you fight it. Yes, it was neat, but in some cases it can get annoying. Honestly, I feel that Fulgernath did the invader schtick better.

I wish that we could see the herbivores get some love in, say, Title Updates, but the inclination towards oneupsmanship and the bigger, badder monster fight makes me afraid we won't get that unless it's a variant of some kind. Though I'd love a like "Ancient Duramboros" or something in the Citadel that's old enough that small trees and such grow on it. Anything to get more variety other than 'here's an even more fierce top-order carnivore or Elder Dragon'. Don't get me wrong: I loved all the fights in the recent Sunbreak update, but watching these videos has made me yearn for a greater variance in monsters and behaviours. Also hurrah for Tea Common Shark!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't like how Banbaro wondered out of an environment it seemed specifically tailored to. While we're on the subject, I didn't like how monsters first introduced into World (for example, Pukei Pukei and Anjanath) made themselves known in the Old World. Not because I don't like these monsters, but because it just removed the uniqueness of the New World. Part of what makes lemurs and Giant tortoises so fascinating is that they have evolved almost completely independently from other animals as a means of surviving on what is essentially a spec of dust that is completely different from the rest of the world. The monsters from the new world gave me that vibe, especially since one of the main themes of the game was to explore and discover new land and new animals. Seeing them outside of the New World destroyed that.

How I just remembered something: Slagtoth are quadrupedal herbivore with longer back limbs that can stay for an extented period of time on its back leg to look around. Maybe they have a common ancestor with Duramboros and Banbaro?

Finally a video about my boy Duramboros. Duramboros probably has very good balance considering it doesn't trip unless being repeatedly hit during spinning or if it is exhausted. I know the reason is more about the game mechanic of hiding the super weak weakspot (the hump) but I like to think they are just that good at balancing anyway.

It'll be interesting to see in the future your thoughts on espinas now that it's been canonized into the main series. And as always another informative watch keep up the good work!

So glad you did these two monsters. Brute wyverns have always been my favourite but the two herbivores in particular. They just feel a lot more analogous to our world today than the ones that are clearly just dinosaurs

I'd love to see Banbaro and Deviljho have a turf war. The idea of a guardian of nature and destruction incarnate sounds so cool.

Really great video, I love these two so it's nice to see them get a video dedicated to them. Their role in ecosystems and the suggestion that they even aid in recovering ecosystems from elder dragon tomfoolery is another great point for them. Would love to see Duramboros return as well, and hopefully it gets a turf war where it can really put that heft to work much like what Diablos has gotten. Also if passive until provoked behaviors are brought back I definitely think Duramboros would fit that bill, unless the males that are fought are full of testosterone as what's been suggested for Mizutsune. Not much to add, though a small point on Duramboros' helicopter spin is that I think it's a great move that would fit well with the flow of modern fights. If you roll under its tail to its legs, you can topple it with enough damage, so the move is a high risk-high reward type of attack since you get a pretty long knock down to get at it's humps for damage.

giant, strong herbivores and wild little carnivores are easily my favorite types of critter (probably why Black Diablos and Odogaron are my favorites..) and the only thing i like more is listening to their ecology and watching their behavior be supported by traits real animals in our world. i swear, these kinds of videos are like my ketamine lol. big thank you to, well. you! the videos on the blos wyverns and odogaron has helped me exponentially in working in how they would behave as a riders monstie. i won’t get into it here because the comment would be too long to post lol. (yes i have seen the debates about riders in the several comment sections across certain monster hunter videos, and i’d like to add that it was a plot point in the first game that you don’t actually need the kinship stone to be a rider and it seems to be more of a cultural identifier, as frostfang told you to fuck off when he was protecting avinia in the wintertide tunnel before he recognized you as a rider, so no riders do not control the monsters using magical powers) but thank you. it’s given me a ton of useful insight!

Personally I’m a fan of how Duramboros uses its tail as a counterbalance and exploits its weight when attacking. Yes the animation goes on for a while, but I’ve always found it easy to get under it and knock it down. I think it’s a clever fighting style that separates Duramboros from the glut of head-focused brute wyverns like Barroth and Uragaan.

I've started binging your monster hunter videos and i find them absolutely fascinating. Before going into art i wanted to be a biologist so this is really fun for me to see speculative ecology on all these monsters!! I love the thought and detail you put into this man! I know it sound strange but i find it fascinating because it kind of acts like/functions like an elephant seal while shaped like a big sea lizard/crocodile. Surprised to see Rust Duramboros wasn't mentioned, with its hump being larger likely as storing reserves is a lot more important in the desert habitat it lives in, yet the tail being shaped like an axe apparently for swiping sand (according to 3U description at least)? That said nice video, I really love both monsters and it pisses me off Duramboros isn't a monstie in the Stories saga. Banbaro, let's say I was not expecting it to pull out trees in the middle of the arena.

One thing that I wish had an explanation is why Beotodus and Barioth attempt to attack banbaro Beotodus in particular looks like equipped to taking popo ang juvenile Banbaro rather than adults as prey. and in truth both Beotodus and Banbaros turf war is recycled from barroth and jyuratodus so it’s likely a fight between the two is either uncommon or unlikely. Barioth is also probably unable to hunt adult banbaro all the time as well. Occasional predation on weak or old adults is probably going to happen but a healthy adult banbaro is probably unable to be hunted by Barioth. As ever amazing work my friend, I cannot wait to see what comes in the mer creature. Good day!

Another wonderful video as always! I am a little sad you didn't mention Rust Duramboros, though; I have to wonder how exactly its ecology had to change to adapt to a desert habitat, especially with the 'blos duo to compete with.

I was talking in a call with my friend about how I recently got into monster hunter and what really drew me in was the dedication they have to creating not just things to hunt and fight, but creatures that could feasibly exist in the world's fictional ecosystem. Like my favorite wyvern, the Pukei-Pukei, likely creates it's poison from the plant matter it eats like the fruits it eats during fights or blue mushrooms it's seen consuming in it's intro for mh rise. (And we know the mushrooms relate to poison as it is used in the crafting of antidote) And the day after that call your videos appeared on my home page. I've completely fallen into this rabbit hole

Ay it's very interesting to see clips from Tea Common Shark used as a 'proof of concept' for Duramboros, it really helps drive the points home, always enjoy listening to these videos

If the Duramboross does comeback, I would really want him to be super apathetic to the hunter pre-fight, like what the Espia (forgot how to spell it) is supposed to be in frontier lore. Humans are too small for them/not there preferred prey and don't see us a threats and it is not a obligate carnivore, so the fact we run around so much makes us just not worth the hassle. It would even go so far as to it being a genuine boon to find one on a hunt, cause you might be small and "helpless" but the 12 ft tall carnivore stomping it is an actual threat that Boros will attack. Maybe even let us climb on its back to carve a piece to two before it gets angry.

Loved the discussion of the gradient of fear and nutrient cycling. That was something I've never heard about before, so I learned something today :). Totally agree that Banbaro is a great design but makes no sense as an invader. He's neither threatening nor aggressive so it's not like getting invaded by Jho or his ilk. It's just like oh, hey man, how's it going. I'd love to see Duram again; his fight isn't that hard for his threat tier but he absolutely oozes personality.

19:04 about Banbaro as the invader. One thing I noticed about Banbaro armor is that for some reason has a mushroomancer skill, something that don’t usually associate itself with Banbaro. I think that Banbaro don’t eat just plant, but also fungi. The reason why I bring this up is that in Elder Recess, there just so happens to be a chillshrooms that the hunter can used to fight off the heat. The effect of the chillshrooms may affect not just the hunters, but also the monsters. Still find it baffling that Banbaro is an invader, but it could explain why the moose monster can be found in Elder Recess. Correct me if I’m wrong.

You didn't mention Rust Duramboros in this video. What do you think is Rust Duramboros roll in desert ecosystems and what sort of relationship could it have the Blos wyverns being both very large herbivores?

Great video as always! I personally don't see Duramboros' spinning move as a time waste at all. If you're quick about it, you can use it to make it fall over, and if you don't, it makes for a massive spinning death trap you definitely want to get away from. If you want to call it a "time waste", then Alatreon's Escaton Judgement and Fatalis' map-covering flamethrower would be the exact same. On a different note, I'd have *loved* to hear at least some short thoughts on Rust Duramboros. It has always seemed really weird to me that it even exists, so hearing about it from a more educated person would've been cool

Duramboros's weapons look awesome and I do enjoy his fight and a world like version would be vary interesting

I've got an interesting suggestion for you to look at. You should take a look at the unique animals and ecology of Dark Sun, an old D&D setting as well the setting for the Prism Pentad book series ((all of which are available on KZfaq as audiobooks for free.)) and a few other books as well. The jist of the setting is that an ancient war has turned the world in a desert wasteland, a very fantasy Mad Max thing going on. Pretty much all the plants and animal are either entirely unique or unique modified versions of existing animals different to our own world. Back a while ago you said you wanted to see a fantasy setting where animals had evolved to use magic like humans and thats the case in Dark Sun. All animals have evolved to use Psionics ((one of three magic systems seen in the setting)) to some degree. In the beginng of the Third Prism Pentad book a character is trying to Psionics to posses the mind of a Kank ((a sort of giant domestic beetle used a beast of burden)) in order to spy on the main character. However the Kank ends up overpowering the character's will with its own psionic defenses and posses his mind instead. He then proceeds to have his body run around on all fours scratching at the walls as he is locked into a fierce mental battle with the creature to regain control over his own body. Its a very unique and i'd love to see the setting get some love in the modern day.

I personally love that banbaro shows up on all the maps just because I like to think he is just very lost. Also if I’m not mistaken he acts as if he is on the verge of a heat stroke in the hotter areas of the elders recess to really drive home the fact that he shouldn’t be there.

Great video again, I do wish Banbaro was given more respect in game, the thing is massive. Its turf war with Beotodus especially looks goofy I think it's mentioned somewhere that Duramboros hibernate (According to BannedLagi anyway), which is likely another reason for the massive humps on its back, feeding it throughout the winter months and this might be when the plant and fungus grow on its back. This ties back into your point about seasons, the Misty Peaks might look very different during the winter than it does in game. Plus it burrows underground during this time, but it might only do so partially, explaining why its nostrils are high on the head (As discussed on Discord). Rust Duramboros also seems like it would be an interesting case to discuss, possibly using the fat in its humps more for water storage than food, and as potential heat shields like camels. It would also be interesting to know whether it competes with the blos wyverns. Since Duramboros eats wood etc. I imagine Monoblos and Rust may compete with one another. Looking forward to the next video, I haven't seen Primeval in like 8 years so it should be a fun one

YO , was that my boy Tea? Hell yeah, his animations are amazing. As for the monsters themselves, I think Duramboros throwing himself like a hammer is so fucking dumb. I hate it so much. As for Banbaro, he's not a bad fight, he just shouldn't be an invader. Put him in just the Hoarfrost and maybe the Ancient Forest and he'd be an almost perfect early game monster.

Haft to say i love these 2 and it's great to see some large monsters being herbivores which I believe we need more off in the series, I've always thought they should be quadrupled instead of bipedal but I've come to love them as is, personally I think we need a new class of monster that can be the large monster version of herbivores like a giant aptonoth, personally I really want a monster based on gastonia, a monster with a chainsaw for a tail is ripe for a great monster I do have a issue with both, for banbaro as funny of a meme as it is its absolute nonsense him being a Invader and for Duramboros I've always felt that rust Duramboros looked like he would overheat in the desert Also on the topic of herbivores you think youl cover some more of the smaller herbivores of monster hunter that you didn't cover in your aptonoth video, would love to see your take on ones like Rhenoplos, Epioth, larinoth, kestodon, gastodon as the other dinosaur like herbivores Also nice to see you using tea common shark videos in your own

Great video as always. I hope we get more Bull Wyverns in the future , perhaps one that's water type using snot and poop to fight instead of the helicopter tail or perhasps one who's Moss Covered Body attracts Bio Electric Bugs to feed on . It would be awesome to if we could even get an Elder Bull whit Hindu Theming that was still a herbivore but VERY territorial. Btw i recently got a Deviljoh figure (yes i love the edgy dragons) and i noticed that it has a regular set of straight Teeth in his mouth outside of the protrusions in its lips and i wonder if he perhaps he uses those to eat and the protrusions in the lips are more to dig like a boar(since thats one of his methods if escape as well as attack by throwing boulders at you )

Banbaro’s one of my favourites design and inspiration-wise. Have yet to fight it myself though. Hopefully they flesh out the herbivore side some more in the near future!

So I recently got caught up with all of the Monster Hunter videos on your channel and I just wanted to say: Great work! I think having this kind of perspective in the fandom is very fun and unique, and you put a lot of thought and care into what you make. I have two questions for you. For the first one I'd like to ask you what your take is, if you have one, on the ancient civilization. Because like, even if we don't know much about it there clearly was an older civilization that got destroyed at some point, all those ruins had to come from somewhere after all. Is how this precursor society affected the world a subject that is worth exploring? The second question is kind of hard to define and not very clear, but I'll try my best to ask it anyway: How much are you willing to deviate from our understanding of the world? I am asking this because like, creatures like the ones seen in Monster Hunter could not exist on earth, they do not function in the way living beings on this planet do. For them to exist the world itself would need to operate on different rules than our world does. So how much are you willing to bend the rules, and *how* do you bend those rules? That still didn't feel very clear, but I hope you'll understand what I'm trying to get at. Thank you for time and your hard work!

I love my buffalo and moose Brute wyverns. Banbaro was my favorite monsters introduced in iceborne I've got a special place in my heart for moose. 27 years of living in Alaska seeing them near daily. :)

Personally I think Kestodon and Gastodon are dwarf relatives of the plant-eating brute wyverns.

I think the helicopter move is fine to stay. If you time and space correctly, which isn't hard to do, you can exploit this massive opening it gives you as it whirls. What it needs is less openings after every other move. I get that it's massive but the older games showcase it to have a surprising level of agility, using that huge hammer tail as a counterweight to and even launch itself with it.

One thing I could imagine is them being protection for smaller herbivores and animals. Since the hoarfrost is such a dangerous area a group of popo or anteka could spend time around banbaro for protection or slagtoth spending time around Durambaros herds.

This video made me remember how much I loved Duramboros.

I do hope to see Duramboros again. I just find it so charming.
