A Wings Over New Zealand Special Video
On the 1st of July 2018 we reunited WWII veteran aviator Bryan Cox with one of the de Havilland DH82a Tiger Moths that he had flown in his Royal New Zealand Air Force training in 1943. Bryan learned to fly at No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School at RNZAF Station Harewood, Christchurch (nowadays the international airport). He then went on to advanced training in North American Harvards at No. 2 Service Flying Training School, Woodbourne, and Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawks/Warhawks at No. 4 (Fighter) Operational Training Unit at Ohakea. And then he flew three operational tours in the Pacific war zone with No. 16 (Fighter) Squadron, RNZAF. After WWII he completed a further tour with No. 14 (Occupational) Squadron in Japan, also flying Corsairs.
Postwar he became an Air Traffic Controller, and then a prolific and very popular Flying Instructor at Ardmore Airport for decades, training many hundreds of pilots. He has also written four books, and these days has a website called Kittyhawks and Corsairs.
In January 2018 Bryan regained his pilots licence at the age of 93 after more than 20 years of not flying. In April 2018 Russell Brodie asked me if I could look through logbooks and records I have collected copies of to see if anyone had flown his Tiger Moth NZ1443 (ZK-BRL, also known as Lily). The only pilot I was able to find at that time who'd flown NZ1443 was Bryan. This is where a scheme was hatched to get them back together, and get Bryan airborne again in the Tiger Moth he'd last flown almost 75 years ago.
We got Bryan down from his home in Tauranga to the Rangitata Island Aerodrome where the Tiger Moth lives. Bryan flew with aerobatics instructor Andy Love in the front seat as his safety pilot. The event was a huge success, and it was all made possible due to the awesome kindness of the Brodie family and all those who contributed to the Givealittle Fundraiser.
Apologies that the flying sequence is not perfectly filmed, they were quite distant and the camera I used was my stills camera which films decided to fall out of focus at the worst possible times, typically. But I hope this film gives a nice record of the wonderful event.

Great video !! My Dad learned to fly during WW 11 in one of these beautiful planes..I remember him saying that it was the biggest thrill of his life, to be in the cockpit, and fly this plane. He went on to fly for the RCAF, 429 SQ, Navigator, FO, in a Halifax Bomber, 32 missions against the enemy..Honor and respect for all Airmen..

Brought a tear! My uncle did his first solo in a Tiger Moth at Bankstown (Sydney - Aust) in the 50s and went on to be a senior flight check captain at Cathay many years ago, retiring in the 90s with something like 55,000 hours. He loved flying the Tristar and finished up on the 747. Mum and dad even got to fly into Kai Tak up front with him. Now, all these years later I am building a balsa Tiger Moth with my son which we will RC and fly together (hopefully!). Makes me want to return to my own flying days... My Dad flew these in his RCAF pilot training days, during 1944. From the other ranks, he applied and was accepted for pilot training while he was already serving in the RCAF in England as a wireless technician, and was sent back to Canada to do his flight training. He graduated at the point where more Allied pilots were not needed for the European Theatre, and so after he graduated, he taught navigation to other pilot trainees until they released him and others conditionally in case they were needed for the Pacific Theatre. Thankfully they never were needed. I wish he'd had one last opportunity to fly in one of these again before he passed. Much love and thank you, Dad.

In 1975, myself and my brother went for a flight in one of these from an airport in Idaho. I recall feeling as safe in it as I would in any other plane.

Stepfather went solo on Tiger Moths in 1944. In 2006, just a couple of weeks short of his 80th birthday, he flew again in the exact same aircraft that he flew solo in in 1944. He described it as feeling like more than 60 years had just fallen away. Same sights, same sounds, and above all - same smells.He's in Harp City now, with his old wartime buddies. It's a different world now - their like will not be seen again.

I flew in a Tiger Moth in the early 70s at Denham airfield. The pilot got her out of the hangar by picking up the tail and pulling her out, one handed, by himself. I was thinking "am I going up in THAT?". She was so light you feel every puff of wind in the air. It's like flying in a feather. Great fun though. The passenger usually sits in the front so you get a fabulous view.

I never flew one but talked to pilots who had the opportunity. They also said it's so light you can move it around with one hand and flying it it's like a paperplane, you're at the mercy of the wind. But all of them loved it.

Can't tell you how much I enjoyed this! What a beautiful pairing of plane & pilot. Many blessings on this gentleman & the kind folks who made this reunion possible. I'm currently assembling a 71" w.s. radio-control model of a Moth in pretty much these colors, retro-fitted with an electric motor in lieu of glow or gas engine. Just hope I can fly it as well as Mr. Cox does!

My Grandad got his wings in canada during ww2 and flew Tiger moths in his training. He always spoke highly of them. I went up in a single engined piper or something from Dundee airport when he was 88 or so. He flew it for a bit again and it was really special. Luv and Peace.

What an amazing story and event to achieve. Reuniting an old pilot with his old aircraft. I was lucky enough to go for a flight in a Tiger Moth for my fiftieth birthday

They are bloody marvelous planes! I had an aerobatic flight in a Tiger Moth over Stonehenge which can be seen on my KZfaq channel. The only way to top aerobatics IN a bi-plane is to do aerobatics ON the bi-plane so I went for a fully aerobatic flight with stall turns, loops and barrel rolls while stood on the top wing of a 1944 Boeing Stearman! Absolutely marvelous stuff!

@@georgejacob3162 . I wouldn't be able to do that. Not because of fear, I get really bad motion sickness. Every turn made my guts churn, the pilot offered to do some aerobatics but I declined. As long as we were going straight and level I was fine

@@MartintheTinman I very nearly had motion sickness on my last aerobatic flight. I realised later in the day that it was because I'd had milk based products in the morning before the flight. No milk, no motion sickness for me. The following day I did a skydive from 15,000ft with no problems

@@georgejacob3162 . I can't ride in a vehicle without getting it. If I'm driving I'm fine. Had it all my life. I swear we went on drives every weekend when I was a kid and I hated it every time

@@MartintheTinman I'm glad I don't suffer from motion sickness as that would drive me up the wall! I still used to hate being a passenger though. I would scream in fear even though the traffic lights were about 3 miles away. I would scream so early that by the time we arrived at the traffic lights my fear had long gone! In fact I scream on my Utter Nutter video at the start of a simple loop. During the Utter Nutter maneuvers which are akin to being in a tumble dryer I'm absolutely fine!

That was wonderful to see! I thoroughly enjoyed that! Watching him fly and do the aerobatics was just wonderful! I had an aerobatic flight in a yellow Tiger Moth over Stonehenge in the UK. My pilot gave me two loops and one stall turn. I've since done two fully aerobatic wingwalks on 1944 Boeing Stearman's! Oh yes! Nothing beats standing on the top wing and doing stall turns, loops and barrel rolls! All of which can be viewed on my KZfaq channel.

A beautiful machine. I am curious to whether or not the Fakenham Flying Club is still in existence. The club bought one and my father was the original flight instructor. He took me up in it a few times. I don't recall it having seat belts! I have some pictures of it and the students, back around 1956, if anyone would like copies emailed to them.

Fantastic video of old plan and old pilot, Pakistan air force used tiger moth as trainer from 1947 to 1957 there where total 7 tiger moth for training the PAF pilots.

I have to drive and hour and thirty minutes to work each way to flight instruct, I live right by an airport though. If I could afford it this is what I’d prefer to use to get to work in less that half the time!

The Tiger Moth would be a good airplane to feel what it is like to " fly ". As opposed to being behind a guided motor.

Yep the yellow bi-plane! I flew in a yellow Tiger Moth that did two loops and a stall turn. I showed restraint by not getting out of the cockpit mid-flight. My pilot would have been horrified if I did that! I was tempted though because I'd already flown on the top wing of a Boeing Stearman bi-plane once at that point! I've since flown twice more on the top wing of Stearman's and both of those times were fully aerobatic with stall turns, loops and barrel rolls! And yes all four of my bi-plane flights can be viewed on my KZfaq channel along with other crazy airborne stuff!

Maximum speed: 109 mph at 1,000 ft (97 kn, 175 km/h at 300 m) Cruise speed: 67 mph (59 knots, 108 km/h Stall is very slow... 25 knots, 29 mph, 47 km/h...

Go for it! I have done and my flight in the Tiger Moth was an aerobatic flight too with two loops and one stall turn! Tiger Moth's are fabulous old planes. I did my flight as a 'warm up' to my 'main event' which was a fully aerobatic wingwalk atop a 1944 Boeing Stearman complete with loops, stall turns and barrel rolls! All of which can be seen on my KZfaq channel along with other crazy airborne stuff!
