This instrument is country music in a nutshell. It's a banjo that makes it easy to do those long slides that country music has.

Yeah! If I could get my hands on one, I'd definitely try and emulate some shamisen sounds. I think it could totally be done.

idk. i dont like it. banjo definitely sounds better with frets, i mean guy in the video even says it. but im sure you all glazed over that and said "woah fretless is less common that makes it cool" but there is reason for this not being the prefferred method by proffessionals, Its only worth it if you need the specific sound for your style. which it likely isnt. edit: i just need to clarify. he said in the video he doesnt prefer the fretless banjo, he just owns one. used it for one song, one song he wrote in 10 minutes.

So what, so let's say someone hates the Eiffel Tower.. just because it's not a common view, are we supposed to judge him as a poser? No, art is art, and people's brains are all very different.. grow up!

Homy, the first banjos were made of gords, and definitely didn't have frets lol. It was a slave instrument adopted by the Irish and Welsh settlers.

@rainierrowse1742

tupelo, their most basic old time openback model. I played one yesterday when I visited their factory. I like the sound better w/steel or bronze strings, it's plucky enough with a wood tone ring and being fretless.

He says "its relatively new" and I hope he is talking about his specifc instrument cause the fretless banjo is older than a fretted one. He also doesnt mention its history which is nice when "intruducing" an instrument. It dates back to the early minstrel performers of the 1830s who aparently got the idea from enslaved africans on the plantations (joel sweeny) So the fretless banjo, often called a "minstrel banjo", is the earliest familiar form of the modern banjo. The stringed instrument played by the slaves were a bit different and less familiar to our modern eyes and ears.

Blah blah blah. Most people know the banjo is a historical instrument. It was made popular by Mumford And Sons in 2010 and has been burning up the charts ever since. I mean sure there are guys like this who toy with one but they don’t really make serious music like those Mumford chaps do. The fretless banjo was built in an attempt to give players a smoother sound like the fretless bass in jazz music. Of course with the invention of the acoustic banjo I predict more people will play them in more intimate venues like front porches and living room jam sessions.
